Want to know the best Betty Grable movies?  How about the worst Betty Grable movies?  Curious about Betty Grable box office grosses or which Betty Grable movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Betty Grable movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Betty Grable (1916-1973) was the number one pin-up girl of World War II. The popularity of her pin-ups helped her become a Top Ten Box Office attraction for ten (1942-1951) straight years!  Her IMDb page shows 84 acting credits from 1929-1958. This page will rank 32 Betty Grable movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.  Everyone of her movies from 1940 to 1956 are included in the rankings.  Most of her pre-1940s were not included in the rankings…but why? Most were either uncredited, small bit parts or movies produced by Paramount.  Paramount is by far the worst studio when it comes to finding out box office grosses from the 1930s.

Drivel Part of the Page:  When Dan sent us a request to do a Betty Grable page….we have to admit we knew almost nothing about her career.  After doing lots of research on her career for this page…we have a new found respect for her awesome movie career.  Her box office numbers are some of the greatest ever for any actress.  So thanks Dan for helping us see the light…hope you enjoy your requested Grable page.

Betty Grable Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Betty Grable movies by co-stars of her movies
  • Sort Betty Grable movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Betty Grable movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort Betty Grable movies by how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Betty Grable movie received.
  • Sort Betty Grable movies by Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.
  • Use the sort and search box to make this table very interactive.  For example if you type in “Hope” in the search box….the 2 Bob Hope/Betty Grable movies will pop right up.

  1. Hmmm I don’t think I’ve seen many Betty Grable movies hang on let me count them… okay just 5 out of 32, not bad eh? What do you mean that’s terrible? 🙂

How to Marry a Millionaire is the one I readily remember from her films and being a bit of a Marilyn Monroe fan I have that title on blu-ray. I also own Follow the Fleet on DVD, part of the Fred & Ginger collection. The other three I’ve seen are A Yank in the RAF, Down Argentina Way and Moon Over Miami. Voted Up.

    1. Hey Steve….5 Grable movies is 5 times my tally count. Our grand total of 6 watched was almost tripled by our good friend Flora. Somehow How To Marry A Millionaire is high on my list of movies to watch. I figured with you liking musicals….your tally count would be much higher. I do admit I am very impressed with her career….she was a beast at the box office. Her total of 14 movies that grossed over $100 million is tied for the 8th most when looking at actresses. As always…thanks for stopping by.

      1. My website provider has these little creatures….pretty sure they are random. Yours is better than mine….I am a purple cello with arms and legs….lol.

  2. Hi, Bruce.

Time commitments and weather issues continue to dominate my time. In looking at the names that have been added since I was last on – I have mentioned this in a reply to your message on Natalie Wood- I see that Betty Grable is the only one of them which is a completed page, so I will focus on her today.

So you did not know much about Betty Grable before writing this page? The most famous pin up picture I can see in my mind. During the war, she was often put in movies (as were others who sang, danced, or dis comic routines) that had little plot but to give a reason to send the movies overseas to show the troops their favourite stars and maybe that is why you were not that familiar with her? Her fans didn’t care about plot. (if you think of a stage door canteen-an actual movie title during WWII-you get the idea of many of her movies at that time)

Her movies with Don Ameche were more plot oriented just like How To Marry a Millionaire. Ameche is my favourite of Grable’s leading men. I have seen all of their films together.

I Wake Up Screaming is her only non musical and her fans did not like seeing her in a thriller. It is quite an odd film and I have not bothered to see it a second time.

I have not seen all of her movies but I have seen a large number of them. The highest rated film I have seen is How To Marry a Millionaire at number 1.

The lowest rated movie I have seen is The farmer Takes A Wife at number 31.

The highest rated movie I have never seen is Diamond Horseshoe at number 7.

Tops of my to-see list is her movie with Jack Lemmon: Three For the Show.

I have seen 8 of her top 10.
I have seen 15 of her top 20
I have seen 17 of the 32 movies listed.

I am sure I’ve seen some films which you could not find box office.

My top 5 Betty Grable movies are:

    How To Marry a Millionaire
    Down Argentine Way
    Moon over Miami
    The Dolly Sisters
    Tin Pan Alley

    Cheers,

    Flora

    1. Hey Flora.
      1. I made a decision to go ahead and publish some of the pages that I do not feel are complete. On Google one of my main competitors for views is TheNumbers.com. This link is to their Betty Grable page. http://www.the-numbers.com/person/57070401-Betty-Grable#tab=acting I figured if they could have that out there….then there is no reason I should not put some of my research out there too. I think my site is way better than their site.
      2. Another decision I reached is the fact that I do not think I will find a magic source that is going to help me with the missing box office numbers for some movies….sadly I think those numbers might be gone forever. Thus that is why my productive has increased so much over the last two months….hope I am not flooding you with pages.
      3. But enough about these pages….sadly I have only seen one Grable movie…1944’s Pin Up Girl. Steve is at 5…..so you almost tripled our total….17 to 6….I thought Steve would be much higher…as it seems to like musicals more than me.
      4. How To Marry A Millionaire is the top movie for me to track down and watch.
      5. I noticed that I Wake Up Screaming did not do as well as other movies in that time frame….she did not seem to think her acting skills were the best…..which is why she turned down Razor’s Edge.
      6. 75% of the Top 20….that is a good sign for my ranking system.
      7. With Pin-Up Girl not making your Top 5….then I have seen none of those movies….two of them will be easy for me to watch….as The Dolly Sisters and Down Argentine Way are right down the street at my local library just begging to be watched.
      8. As always…your thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated. Hope your holidays are going great.

    1. Hey Tashlin…..not sure I thought that before writing this page….but I am a believer now! I will have to check out more of her movies…thanks for stopping by.
