Cogerson Review of Black Panther

Why I watched this one? Amazingly, I was one of the last members of my family to watch this massive blockbuster….being a movie fan….I could no longer deal with that little fact.

What is this one about? T’Challa, the King of Wakanda, rises to the throne in the isolated, technologically advanced African nation, but his claim is challenged by a vengeful outsider who was a childhood victim of T’Challa’s father’s mistake.

My thoughts on this one? Maybe my expectations were too high. Many people I respect have claimed this was the best superhero movie EVER! Sadly, I do not see it that way….actually….in my mind it ended up being a pretty average superhero movie.

I still enjoyed the movie….just I found the lack of humor pretty surprising. I liked Michael B. Jordan as the villain….but after about 60 minutes he had only appeared in one scene….then in the course of about 20 minutes of screen time he accomplishes so much stuff that only thing that is left for him to do is the grand finale fight scene with the Black Panther.

The action scenes were pretty “meh”…..the final fight between the hero and the villain was ok at best. Andy Serkis brings lots of energy to the movie…..but ends up with only a few scenes to bring that energy to. Martin Freeman’s character was totally boring…..and a waste of time. That time should have been spent of some of the Wakanda soldiers like the ones played by Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya and Winston Duke….those were some interesting characters.

Final thought: A good but should have been better superhero movie.
