Hey Dan. As always, thanks for your thoughts on our latest page. The “3rd on IMDb” came from her IMDb trivia section. She is number 000000003 there….I wonder how high their number is today…we here at UMR are in the mid 50,000s . Looking at the first list, Michel Piccoli leads the way with 4 movies. Looking at the second list….7 is probably pretty good, since she never appeared in too many Hollywood movies. Still…some legends on the list. Good stuff as always.
Excellent UMR page
Thank you Mike.
I have seen only 3 Brigitte Bardot movies so far. I am surprised that I have not seen more of them.
Dear Brigitte is a favourite.
I have also seen Helen of Troy and Contempt, both worth seeing
I am guessing that when you do a page on Alain Delon movies as per Joel Hirshhorn’s book that you will use a similar method in determining the ranking of his French and other European films. Not sure when his page will be, but I have seen several of his and TCM is airing 24 hours of his movies August 31st so my total will rise
Hey Flora. Thanks for checking out our slightly different page on Brigitte Bardot. I have actually not seen a single BB movie……yet I have known her name for as long as I can remember.
You are 100% correct…I will probably do an Alain Delon page the same way. Also Jean-Paul Belmondo, Eddie Constantine, and Catherine Deneuve. The amount of Joel subjects is dwindling and dwindling. Good stuff.
FYI. When looking at the box office grosses for Brigitte Bardot, please understand the following rules. If there is only one American title then the gross is the domestic total (only about 7 movies). If there is an American title and a French title then the gross is what the movie earned in France (about 35 movies). Most of Bardot’s movies did not open wide in North America. gorgeous woman
Cogerson, I loved the way you used a separate chart for non usa released films in previous pages. I do not feel it is fair to ms bardot to use just one smaller country’s numbers. I hope for purity you revert to previous method, informative but separate. mia culpa . either way you are the best.
I am zero for bardot. none seen. she was 12th billed in letterboxd for helen of troy. her number 2 UMR and number 1 box office.
after some thought, I have another unasked for suggestion. would you consider listing starring roles only in your costars box for each movie . subsequently you might add another box underneath the existing data for selected supporting cast. this project might take years to complete but it might silence The Bob on this issue while proving the valuable information He desires. this would also satisfy my desire to have leading roles designated. silencing both Bobs on a subject, LOL, what an accomplishment.
HI BOB COX: I have been trying for years to get Bruce to pay more attention to who the top co-stars are in movies. I still have nightmares about him ignoring Hedy Lamarr and in effect creating the impression that Angela Lansbury was Delilah to Victor Mature’s Samson in the 1949 Samson and Delilah.
He has changed THAT but generally speaking still continues on his merry way: for example listing Bruce Willis alone as James McEvoy’s co-star in 2016’s Splt whereas Willis was not really in the movie and made just a gimmicky brief appearance at the close of it.
McAvoy’s official co-star in Split who gets equal billing to him is Anya Taylor-Joy and Willis is uncrdited so Bruce Cogerson’s co-star column is widely misleading and I think through self-indulgence he is maybe guilty of diluting a bit his wider duty to prpperly inform his viewers.
I have done my best to dissuade him from such “fake news” as his political leader would probably describe it; but you knoW the old saying: “You can take a Horse to water but you cannot make it drink.” – no pun intended!
Anyway it’s good to know that a key viewer like yourself shares my concerns; but it seems that The Work Horse is determined to heed Shakespeare’s advice in Macbeth that proper order should be ignored “Stand not upon the order of your going” Here Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth is instructing that the proper order of rank and status should be ignored.
Hey Bob….as we have discussed before….the column is called “UMR Co-Star Links” not the “Stars of the Movie”. One of the big things we do behind the scenes is worry about “Bounce Rates”. One of the many ideas we have come up through the years is showing the UMR Co-Stars with a link…..the hope is people will click the link…and go to another UMR page. Anya Taylor-Joy currently (no UMR page) would not help the bounce rate. Bruce Willis (has a UMR page) helps the Bounce Rate…and in the case of Split…Bruce is the reason I went to the theater to see Split….normally a movie I would avoid. So Bruce helped the grosses for that movie. Plus he helps me with my Bounce Rate.
Bounce Rates….it used to be 98% bounce rate…..meaning if 100 people came to UMR….98 would leave after the page that got them there….2 would go to another UMR page. This year the bounce rate is 77%. My Google rankings use Bounce Rate among other things to decide how good a website is.
Getting ganged up on by the Bobs….lol.
The Bob, if I wanted silence ,why oh why did I poke the bear? I appreciate you and your sparkling wit.
WoC to the rescue, can she save our hero?
Hey bob cox…..we will see how good WoC is…..she is a very busy lady..sometimes her job gets in the way of her UMR duties. If she’s not careful she might find yourself on double secret probation… LOL.
Hey bob cox…..thanks for the feedback on our BB page. I am guessing I will use this approach for some more French thespians….but luckily the domestic grosses normally provides enough information.
I am right there with you for 0 Brigette Barbot movies seen.
As for the suggestion to silence the Bobs on co-star billing. That is a tricky project. WoC is working (slowly) on something that will create pages automatically…versus the current method of me doing one manual page after another. IMDb is a source she uses…..they are all over the place with regards to billing…sometimes it seems right…other times…stars of the movie are listed in the 20th place.
The co-star column….has never been a “top billing” column. People with UMR pages get the spot versus people without UMR pages.
Supporting roles vs starring roles…another issue we have never figured out how to work in our database….I can list the role as supporting or leading…but when it goes to the table, it currently does not seperate that info. Then a new formula would have to be created that uses the difference. Then….it still turns into a subjective thing. One could argue that Anthony Hopkins was a supporting character in Silence of the Lambs….he is only in the movie for about 15 minutes. But he got top billing and is the reason it was such a success.
Long answer to say…I hear your request….and we will keep trying to figure out a way to make something like that work. Good comment here and all the other ones today.
