6/DURBIN: MB and Deanna dined together in 1954 when he was making Desiree for director Henry Koster who set up the meeting at his home. The two megastars signed autographs for a member of Henry’s family on the plaster cast around a broken leg!
7/GRACE KELLY. Marlon and her reportedly had a brief fling during the 1955 Oscar ceremonies when she won for Country Girl and he for Waterfront. The same sources claim that her Country Girl co-star Crosby also had his eye on her and that in backstage private room he and Marlon came to blows over Grace with Bing unfortunately losing the physical confrontation [possibly though only because Bob Hope wasn’t in the room to hold Bing’s coat!]
8Liz Taylor admired Brando as an actor since [she told him on the set of Reflections in a Golden Eye] she was a young girl in the early 1950s; she and Burton socialised with him in the late sixties and the early 1970s; and until her dying days she spoke warmly of The Great Mumbler. “I adored him!” she said in the last interview that I saw involving her.
Burton too praised Brando often in interviews particularly drawing attention to how well Marlon could act with his eyes and face.
Indeed in his diaries Richard even records his own jealousy over his perception of Brando’s superior acting skills. It strikes me that people like the Burtons/Hank Fonda and today Jack Nicholson/Dustin Hoffman/ Martin Scorsese and George Lucas along with the various women that I have mentioned above knew a Brando whom Joel Hirschhorn never truly got to know.
“Constantinople suited me better. I never knew the old Vienna before the war with its Strauss music, its glamour and easy charm. I really got to know it in the classic period of the black market.” Opening voice-over narration to 1949’s The Third Man.
4/DEBORAH KERR said Brando was the only movie star to whom she ever wrote a fan letter which she sent to him on the set of 1957’s Sayonara.
5/CRAWFORD. My Joan was keen to work with Brando during the 1950s and her agents approached him to play Crawford’s youthful lover in 1956’s Autumn Leaves. He abruptly told the agents to “look me up again when she has a couple of mother and son roles for us to play.” Cruel and uncalled-for I thought possibly more becoming to Tracy/Crowe/W C Fields. [unlike the Work Horse and Steve I don’t sanitise my idols: I’m a “warts and all” type of guy].
My Joan’s best friend was Myrna Loy but I never saw any trivia connecting The Great mumbler with the latter. Possibly if he thought at all of The Thin Woman he would have consigned her too to the “mothers” club. Certainly if in the 1950s Thins had teamed with All Leach again Archie too would probably have demoted her to motherhood – the Jessica Royce Landis role in N by NW? As HE grew older the screen wives and lovers of Archibald Alec Leach kept getting younger. The Picture of Dorian Grant.
Brigitte Bardot seems to be just one of the many powerful iconic movie divas of his times that Brando had connections with to one degree or another and here are further examples.
1/BARBRA STREISAND said they were so close over the years that she and Marlon would go on road trips together. She claimed they were completely platonic; but be that as it may to this day she publicly sings his praises.
2/Among the lesser lights SHELLEY WINTERS tells us in her book about how armed with a bunch of beautiful flowers Burton Lancaster called courting at her apartment and she had to concoct a story to prevent Burt from gaining access. In reality Brando had gotten there first and was already inside. She claims that in those early years the two young future AFI Legends competed heavily for her affections.
3/MONROE. For a time they too were lovers; socialised together; she admired his acting; he spoke warmly of her in public; and ironically they were two of only four mainstream movie stars [the others being Chaplin and Sinatra] to be named in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential people of the 20th Century along with the likes of The Kennedys/FDR/Mother Teresa.
In an interview MM described how she and MB met when she slipped away from a social gathering to get a taxi home and noticing another passenger waiting at the taxi-stand she said to him “You’re Marlon Brando, aren’t you?” He replied “Yes” and the relationship developed from there.
Hey Bob…interesting Brando and “The Women” comments/stories. I am sure somewhere buried in the history of Hollywood there is a story about Brando and Loy. Thanks for sharing all of these stories..making mental note to move them to the Brando page. Good stuff as always.
“Cogerson on Brigitte Bardot Movies Hey Bob. Three good comments from you. Thanks for sharing how you viewed BB in the 1950s. Funny story about Scott and the preacher. Tally count: Steve 6, you 5, Flora and Greg 3 and Cogerson gets shut out.”
“— and they that were ready went in with him: and the door was shut.”

Hey Bob…I think the fact that I have not seen a single one of her movies…yet have known her name all my life, is a great example of just how big a star she was and is. One day, I will remove that Bardot goose egg off my resume.
Another day, that I COULD work on the book, and another day, that I am doing something else….today I am going GOLFING. I know…I am a SLACKER…but I did finish up the Laurence Harvey page before leaving.
Good stuff as always.
Lots and lots of Brigitte Bardot comments…I will catch up on them tomorrow morning….as it is getting late here at UMR headquarters.

Hey Greg….amazingly…almost 24 hours passed since I last was on this Brigitte comment. The passing of Kelly Preston took away my attention this morning.
