Possibly Interesting Facts About Carl Weathers
1. Carl Weathers was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1948.
2. Carl Weathers played college football at San Diego State University. One of his teammates was another future actor Fred Dryer. During his professional football career, he played for the Oakland Raiders and a Canadian Football League squad.
3. Carl Weathers is briefly seen as an Army MP in one of the three released versions of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977).
4. Carl Weathers based his most famous character, the flashy boxer Apollo Creed from the Rocky films, was loosely based on Muhammad Ali.
5. During his audition for 1976’s Rocky, Carl Weathers was sparring with Sylvester Stallone and accidentally punched him on the chin. Stallone told Weathers to calm down, as it was only an audition, and Weathers said that if he was allowed to audition with a ‘real’ actor, not a stand-in, he would be able to do a lot better. Director John G. Avildsen smiled and told Weathers that Stallone was the real actor (and the writer). Weathers looked at Stallone thoughtfully for a moment, and said, “Well, maybe he’ll get better.” Stallone immediately offered him the role.

With great sadness we will miss him!!!
Rest in Peace Mr. Weathers
See my Additional Trivia in my earlier post. I felt that I had come across that Brando/Palance boxing story somewhere before so on reflection I checked out Jack’s Cogerson page and found that Bruce first revealed the story on this site.
Accordingly WH confirms the story except that the documentary suggested that as well as punching the bag the two men did a bit of general sparring in a makeshift ring.
Anyway Darn that Work Horse – he had better stop getting in before me with Brando stories!!
I have never been a big fan of the Rocky franchise but I did like the music in the movie Rocky 4 [1985] particularly Living in America. In the movie Carl’s Apollo Creed danced to the song in the MGM Grand.
It was played before the exhibition match between Creed and Drago, which resulted in Creed’s death in the second round which Rocky of course later avenged. James Brown’s recording of the song used to be in my movie collection for quite a while.
As Bruce shows above 2019’s Toy Story 4 was Carl’s last big screen feature. In the 2019-2020 period Carl also appeared in 6 episodes of the TV series Star Wars: The Mandalorian which is still running. Carl played the recurring role of Greef Karla leader of a bounty hunter guild and there is no indication yet as to whether he will be in further episodes.
In June this year Carl’s net worth was assessed at $8 million. Carl wasn’t in Rocky 4 for that long but in hindsight his performance in the film was the one that I enjoyed the most so this new page is “Voted Up”.
ADDITIONAL TRIVIA
Item 5 of Possibly Interesting Facts above DID actually interest me because by coincidence I watched a documentary about Jack Palance the other night and it told how Jack was Brando’s understudy in the New York stage run of Streetcar and the two men sparred in the ring to keep fit for the role and Jack accidentally broke Brando’s nose.
Whilst unfortunate, for Palace at least it proved to be a blessing in disguise because Marlon was absent from the cast for a while receiving medical treatment and healing so that Jack got to play Stanley longer than an understudy normally would.
Carl’s insinuation that Sly was not “a real actor” made me wonder if Weathers was being naïve – or whether Tennessee Williams had secretly been having a word in his ear!! Certainly if YOURS TRULY had imparted that information about Carl wanting “a real actor” WH would probably have accused me of making it up.
Great UMR Page
Thank you Mike.
