Hello,
The great French lover and he was the leading actor with Garbo, Dietrich , Bergman, Hepburn…
But there is a french film which is a great chef d œuvre and it is call
« Madame de… » from Max Ophuls with Danielle Darrieux, i saw it two weeks ago and I stay before the TV until the end because it is simply perfect…
Mayerling was a great succès in America with Darrieux and In your page I learn something , a film with LInda Darnell that I did not see.
It is a remake of a french film which is call « Le Corbeau »
Thank you Bruce for the page
Bye
Pierre
Hey Pierre…..good to hear from you. I figured a page on one of the great French actors would get a comment out of you….lol. Sadly…many of Boyer’s French movies did not make this page….sound like Madame de with Danielle Darrieux is worth checking out. Glad you were able to learn something from this page. Thanks for the feedback…hope all is well with you.
Doesn’t look like I was much of a Boyer fan, looking at the list I’ve only seen 3 of his films. Pitiful I know. Well in my defence he simply wasn’t appearing in films that appealed to me.
The three I saw are – Casino Royale, How to Steal a Million and The Buccaneer. I may have seen Barefoot in the Park decades ago, can’t remember. Gaslight is on my to-see list.
I’m more familiar with the quote “come wiz me to de Kazbaah!” than the actor who supposedly said it. According to Wikipedia he did say it in the trailer to Algiers.
bon travail Bruce. Vote Up!
HI STEVE More new information for me from you – I didn’t know that “Come wiz me” was in just the trailer. Thanks for sharing that.
Apparently Algiers made a profit of $150,000 back in 1937 which according to the Consumer Price Index of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics would be worth about $2.7 million today. Wouldn’t interest the likes of the Spielbergs and the Lucases who are seeking billions when they make a movie but in the early decades of Hollywood the structure was the mass production of movies at relatively low costs which would mostly make low to modest profits individually by today’s standards but collectively would generate fortunes for the studios.
Boyer was one of Hollywood’s great romantics – off screen as well as on it. Unusually for a movie star he was married only once, to Pat Patterson for 44 years from 1934 until her death from cancer in August 1978, upon which he committed suicide two days later from a broken heart. Tragically also the only child of Charles and Pat, Michael, had also taken his own life in 1965 aged just 22.
Because of our old friend “billing”. Ingrid Bergman almost didn’t get the plumb female lead in 1944’s Gaslight which won her an Oscar. Boyer’s contract guaranteed him 1st billing but Ingrid’s agent [taking account of the fact that she had just appeared (1942/43) in the two monster box office hits Casablanca and For Whom the Bell Tolls] was refusing to let her accept second billing and was proposing to turn down the role.
However she convinced him to change his mind by using arguments such as “What does it matter who comes first as long as both names are the same size and appear above the title together?” Fans of Spencer Tracy and Steve McQueen please take note!
Hey Bob…..good comment on Mr. Boyer. I especially liked the information on Charles and Pat Patterson……none of that information was known by me. Interesting about the billing and Boyer and Bergman. Regardless of billing…that movie belongs to Bergman….she is pretty much in every scene in the movie….and Boyer is almost pushed into a supporting role….at least how I remember it….but I acknowledge in has been many years since seeing that movie. Bergman won her first of 3 Oscars for Gaslight. Boyer got his 3rd of 4 nominations for Gaslight….so it worked out well for the both of them. Good stuff.
HI BRUCE Thanks for your response. I agree with you about Ingrid’s dominance though I think that Charles’ less screen time goes with the character he played. Too much screen exposure can lessen the menace that his character was supposed to generate.
When they came to renew their partnership in 1948’s Arch of Triumph though Ingrid must have been a bit more jealous of her billing because if you look at the poster on Wiki for example you will see they used the McQueen/Newman Towering Inferno compromise billing in that Charles got first billing and Ingrid was listed second but her name was raised above Boyer’s.
However the conventional observation of that arrangement is that whoever is billed first [i.e. on the left of the poster as you look at, which is Boyer on the posters for Arc of Triumph] has the better billing even if the co-star’s name is on a higher level. Maybe all those years ago Tracy realised that conventional wisdom might change and that is why he refused to agree to any of those kinds of compromises!
Hey Steve…..thanks for the visit, comment and tally on Mr. Charles Boyer. My tally is only slightly bigger than your 3….and both of us trail Flora by “a country mile”. I am really surprised that you have not seen Gaslight. I feel that is a movie that Hitchcock could have made…..lots of the same themes…..Bergman as the leading lady……you should check that one out. When I think of Boyer….Gaslight is the movie that comes into my mind. Angela Lansbury got her first Oscar nomination for that movie….only three quarters of a century ago….the kids were watching her last night in Mary Poppins Returns. Now…that…I…..feel is a cool stat.

I noticed on the oracle that it includes in the new version using Wikipedia over 400,000 actors. It used over 2 million when it was the IMDB.
Hey Dan
1. Thanks for the trivia lists on Charles Boyer.
2. Being number 806 is pretty impressive….especially since he only made a few movies after the 1960s…..so to be able to stay on the list after almost 60 years….IMPRESSIVE.
3. Lots of great stars on both lists…and some I am not aware of at all….MARCEL DALIO…comes to mind.
4. 39 Oscar winning co-stars is a good total…especially since many of his movies were made in France and did not play in theaters here.
5. I like the list that show 400,000 movies more than the one using 2,000,000.
Good stuff as always.
Charles Boyer never really said “Come with me to the Casbah”, any more than Ingrid Bergman said, “Play it again, Sam”. But the line typified him: exotic, romantic and exciting. Boyer was – and still is- the best continental lover the American screen ever had.”

Always good to be able to include the thoughts of the two-time Oscar winning Mr. Joel Hirschhorn!
I have seen 18 Charles Boyer movies including 9 of the top 10. I wasn’t aware there were so many Boyer movie I have not seen.
The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Gaslight.
The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Toravich.
the LOWEST rated movie I have seen is Love is a Ball.
I’m surprised that Tales of Manhattan got 4th place as often anthology movies don’t do as well.

You will note that both of the Glenn Ford movies are not listed among my favourites. Despite Glenn Ford’s presence, they are not favourites of mine.
Hey Flora. First of all….congrats on getting this comment in. With the problems of the website the last few days….this is truly an amazing accomplishment. 18 for you…..I am at a lowly 4 seen….so you almost have seen 5 times my amount. Tales of Manhattan was one of the many “ensemble” movies of the 1940s that did pretty well at the box office. The fact that it was his biggest hit, really helped it reach that number 4 ranking.
My 4 Boyer movies seen…are all in your favourites. I would say How To Steal A Million is my favorite Boyer movie…and his part is very small. My favorite “Boyer leading man” role would be Gaslight. He is very convincing in that role. I always felt that Gaslight was the movie Hitchcock wanted to make with Suspicion. Too bad the studio refused to let Cary Grant be the bad guy.
I saw that his Glenn Ford movies did not make your Top 10…..I guess that speaks volumes for those movies. Good stuff as always.
