Back in 2011 our movie pages used to live at HubPages.com. One of our most popular pages was one that provided a statistical table that summarized all of the performers that we had written about. Somehow we forgot to bring that page to our new website. Well tonight we got an e-mail from somebody at TCM’s message boards requesting for that page to live again. So we frantically updated some tables…put the information on an operating table……attached it to a machine with lots of blinking lights…..put the lightning rod on the roof…..and then when the lightning hit the rod….Look! It’s moving. It’s alive. It’s alive… It’s alive, it’s moving, it’s alive, it’s alive, it’s alive, it’s alive, IT’S ALIVE!
This Table Can Be Sorted or Ranked in 7 Different Categories
The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.
- Sort by the actor’s amount of movies that we have in our database
- Sort by the actor’s average adjusted domestic box office gross ….. using current movie ticket cost
- Sort by the actor’s $100 million domestic box office hits
- Sort by the actor’s average critic audience rating
- Sort by the actor’s Oscar® nominations received (all categories for all of their movies)
- Sort by the actor’s Oscar® wins (all categories for all of their movies)

I’ve always been fascinated with historical box office data for Classic Hollywood. There are just a handful of sources readily available, aside from the Warners, RKO, and MGM ledgers, which can be found via technical papers in libraries, there is basically no information available. So I guess I am saying your site is a wonderful find.
Interesting that the top-rated AFI actor and actress (Bogart and K. Hepburn) are only 13th and 21st using these criteria.
Yep, it is to be expected since Box Office Data weighs more in the formula, and generally top actors are not always necesarily top Box Office champions.
1. Clark Gable
2. John Wayne
3. James Stewart
4. Charlton Heston
5. Spencer Tracy
6. Gary Cooper
7. Bing Crosby
8. Cary Grant
9. Gregory Peck
10.Henry Fonda
Hey Lady E. The top 10 is loaded with all-time greats…..highly unlikely that anybody is going to crack this top 10….at least when you are looking at the all-time classic greats.
Hey Down Goes Frazier….when looking at their average UMR scores…Hepburn comes in 3rd of the classic actresses and Bogart comes in 19th when looking at the actors. When I did my movie tournament….I only looked at their Top 30 movie averages…and when you do that Bogart went to 5th of actors and Hepburn got the top spot. Either way they are both all-time greats. Thanks for checking out my classic actors page.
Hey Lady E….glad you found my website. Hopefully you will find lots of classic movies WITH box office grosses here. I appreciate the kind words in your comment. Thanks for stopping by.
A lot of work, Bruce. This is wonderful.
looking forward to Claudette Colbert.

Hey Flora….doing this page was actually pretty quick….doing all the pages that give these results has taken over 5 years……and oh so many to do. Juggling….Warren Oates, Film Noir (seems every movie between 1940 and 1959 fell into film noir….lol), Joan Fontaine, and Claudette Colbert…as who to do next. Thanks for stopping by.
All of these names interest me.
Flora
It still fascinates me that the classic movie pages have become the most popular pages on the website. And even more fascinating to me is that when my mother-in-law asked for a Clark Gable page…..I told her that “nobody wants to read about Clark Gable”….turns out she is pretty smart….lol.
