  1. Just added 15 more Dean Stockwell movie trailer pages…including two very strange movies (three is you count Blue Velvet)….in Human Highway and The Last Movie. That now makes 24 Stockwell trailer pages.

  2. The first Dean Stockwell movies I recall seeing were The Boy with Green Hair on a black and white TV, therefore not seeing the green hair and Compulsion which was on ABC debuting in 1969. The last film of his I saw was CQ last week.

    Dean was #198 on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list in 2016 (he has since dropped to 245). Dean has appeared in a film with last year’s best actor Oscar winner, Gary Oldman and the winners of the 1931 best actor (Lionel Barrymore) and the co-winner of the 1932 (Wallace Beery) awards. These are the other actors on the 2016 list he has worked with;

    1. Hey Dan
      1. Well after a few UMR subjects that had short lists…..Dean Stockwell brings with him some very long lists.
      2. Thanks as always for including this information.
      3. I like the Best Actor Oscar trivia….from Barrymore/Beery to Oldman almost covers 100 years of Oscar winning performances.
      4. Stockwell had a stroke in 2006 and has retired from acting…I imagine his rankings will continue to drop fast……but still kudos for being in the Top 250 right now.
      5. Bess Flowers in only ONE Dean movie? I want a recount…..lol.
      6. Looks like Dennis Hopper was his most frequent co-star…..that makes me appreciate their appearance in Blue Velvet…..by then they had worked together for 20 years.
      7. 39 Oscar winners is the highest total for awhile.
      8. And finally…looks like two movies really helped Dean out on all the lists…The Player and Won Ton Ton….at least he actually has a role in The Player…..versus it just being a cameo.
      Good information.
      6.

  3. I have seen 14 Dean Stockwell movies. He was one of the few child stars to make a strong transition into adult roles. He is one of my favourite child star actors,

The HIGHEST ranked film I have seen is Gentleman’s Agreement. I know it stars Gregory Peck, but it is a difficult film to watch and therefore not a favourite.

The highest ranked film I have NOT seen is Beverly Hills Cop II. That’s right. I have indeed seen Air Force One, a recent film.

The LOWEST ranked film I have seen is The Secret Garden.

    Favourite Dean Stockwell Movies:

    Anchors Aweigh
Down to the Sea With Ships
    Compulsion
    The Romance of Rosy Ridge
    Kim
    The Valley of Decision
    The Boy With Green Hair
    Stars in My Crown

Stockwell was in two episodes of Columbo. In one he was the murder victim. In the other he was a suspect, but not the killer (Robert Vaughn was).

    1. HI FLORA

Saw those two Columbo episodes and particularly remember the first one you mention [The Most Dangerous Game 1972] in which Dean played a callow, womanising waster who was murdered in his swimming pool by Robert Culp of Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice fame.

Dean’s role was short but he was excellent in it – a far cry from the nice little innocent boy in Down to the Sea in Ships.

    2. Hey Flora…..thanks for the Dean Stockwell feedback. Your 14 tally is right behind Steve’s 16 and not too far behind my 20. I saw Gentleman’s Agreement about 8 years ago…..it was not one of my favorite Peck movies I watched for the first time. His success for 70 years should be mentioned more often. Apparently he had a stroke a couple of years ago….and is now retired. I did not hear either of those news items. I have only seen 4 of your favorites….of those four…I give Complusion the edge for being my favorite. But Orson Welles steals the show in that one. Good trivia on his Columbo appearances. Good stuff.

  4. Dean Stockwell – You sure know how to press my nostalgia buttons Teach! Ironically enough we male kids who were enthralled by the adult heroes of the 1950s were never too interested in boys our own age – they were just ”kids” after all!

Dean was an exception for me because he was in Down to the Sea in Ships one of my fave films starring my Richard and also in Cattle Drive and Stars in my Crown** with Joel McCrea whom I followed loyally as a youngster. Dean had a 70 year long career as a supporting actor in movies and on television and is still alive today at 82. He survives his brother Guy Stockwell who looked like him and played the title role in the 1966 remake of Beau Geste.

**I see Wiki is currently having its Gabby Hayes moment by naming Randy Scott instead of McCrea as the star of that movie in its write-up on Dean’s career so my own fave Moderator who, W o C and Joel aside, is very much a lone wolf can be forgiven for the very occasional Gabby moment!

My fave Stockwell adult role was in 1959’s Compulsion starring Welles for which Dean won the best actor award at the Cannes Film festival, sharing the accolade with Welles and Bradford Dillman . He also won the best actor award at Cannes for the l962 Long Day’s Journey into Night, no mean achievement when he was “competing” in that one with seasoned acting giants Katie Hep, Sir Ralph Richardson, and Jason Robards. Dean shared the award with the two actors and Katie of course won the best actress award.

The other “kid” that I could tolerate in movies was Brandon D Wilde because he was with my Alan in Shane and my other idols Audie and Jimmy in Night Passage. Besides we youngsters didn’t pay close attention to spelling in those days and for a long time I thought his name was BRANDO De Wilde.

I forgive myself for that because professionals in the early 1950s were making the same mistake. Around Belfast on marquees and in newspaper ads Chuck for example was often called CHARLES Heston, Jeanne Crain got JEAN or Jeannie with often a CrainE tucked onto the end, and the great orator was at times referred to as Marlon Brandon or even Marlo Brandon. You gotta remember though, WH, that Chuck and Bud were newcomers at that time.

Nobody ever said that Angela Lannsbury was Delilah though! YOU scored an original there! Brandon had a 20 year acting career probably mostly in TV but died aged 30 in a tragic accident. His death brought more tears to me than usual because for me “little Joey Starrett” from Shane had passed away.

Anyway Teach thanks for making my Sunday with a page on this actor who although he gave up acting as late as just 2014 is for me a big “blast from the past”. I was never a Flynn fan but to this day I can vividly remember going to the Majestic in Belfast one Saturday afternoon in the early 50s with my late aunt to watch Kim. I see Steve has joined me in a big “Vote Up” for this exciting new page. By the way super ensemble still above – those were the days!

    1. Hey Bob…..glad this Dean Stockwell UMR page brought back such good memories. I was looking at my MGM book…and I saw the MGM stars picture….and Dean being in the picture has always fascinated me. I have not seen Down to the Sea in Ships…but I will add it to my list of movies to watch. Interesting that Stockwell and Brandon D Wilde were the child actors you liked so much. I have always put Stockwell as my generations Kurt Russell….somebody that has been a star for as long as I have been around. Thanks for the vote up and for the Stockwell feedback….it is of course greatly appreciated.

      1. HI STEVE

When I saw Brandon in Shane I had never heard of him before [and had anyway eyes only for Laddie] and Julius Caesar was out that year starring a Marlon Brando whose name also meant nothing to me then so in my immature mind I kept mixing up a Brando D Wilde with a Marlon Brandon, helped along with marquee misspelling as I’ve said.

And it took me a year or so to grasp Chuck was Charlton and not Charles. Ah the naivete of boyhood – only Joel seems to have carried that innocence with him into manhood!

Never got confused between Sir Michael Caine and Sir Maurice Micklewhite in later life though – always knew they were the same guy!

        1. Hey Bob….interesting about getting Brando D Wilde and Marlon Brando mixed up. Ah….the minds of young men….lol. It is hard for me to get Caine and Micklewhite mixed up….he has been Michael Caine for as long as I have been born.

          1. HI BRUCE

I suppose that’ where age has its benefits and I have the advantage of you.

I even remember Glenn when he was Charlie Bill Stuart!

      1. HI BOB COX

When one was young one didn’t really read posters too closely – just looked at the pictures on them – and I often got actors and even movie names mixed up or misspelt them

Cinema posters often aggravated the situation by wrongly spelling names/movie titles. However here in Belfast the posters were usually made locally by general advertising firms who didn’t specialise in promoting movies.

That probably wouldn’t happen today as a fortune is pumped into the promotion of movies and a firm that kept getting things wrong most likely wouldn’t survive too long in the movie advertising business nowadays.

Anyway good to hear from you again Robert.

  5. The only film I care about here is Dune, you can keep the rest.

Oh alright let’s see what else is on the chart… I count 16 films out of 56 that I know I’ve watched. Favorites are – Dune, Beverly Hills Cop II, Anchors Aweigh, Air Force One and To Live and Die in LA.

I watched The Dunwich Horror again fairly recently, not very good. And the Werewolf of Washington was worse.

I’m almost sure I’ve seen Kim starring the great Errol Flynn but it might have been just clips in a documentary.

The only film here I’ve seen multiple times is David Lynch’s Dune, the one film in his filmography he doesn’t talk about. The original novel by Frank Herbert was a big favorite when I was a kid, less so the rest of the series.

I want to see Married to the Mob again, watched it once a long time ago looks like I wasn’t overly impressed with it. Might be worth another look. Blue Velvet too.

    Nice work Bruce. Vote Up.

    1. Hey Steve…..thanks for checking out our Dean Stockwell page. So you have seen 16 of his movies…or 28.57% of the movies listed. I am at 20 movies watched or 35.71% of his movies. I included a photo of Dune just for you. Of your favorites…I have seen all of them with Air Force One and To Live and Die In L.A. are my favorites too. I have not even heard of The Dunwich Horror or Werewolf in Washington before doing this page. I have not seen Married To The Mob in probably 30 years…I had forgotten he got an Oscar nomination for that one. I bet there are some excellent Dennis Hopper stories that Stockwell could share. Stockwell made numerous movies with Hopper including ones like Human Highway and The Last Movie which might be some of the most unusual behind the scenes movies ever made. Good feedback as always.
