Why I watched this one? Been going to movie theaters to see Star Wars movies for almost 40 years now….why stop now?
What is this one about? The Rebel Alliance makes a risky move to steal the plans for the Death Star, setting up the epic saga to follow.
My thoughts on this one? Movie has some parts I really liked…but also many parts that I did not like at.
What I liked: (1) This is a visually impressive movie.
(2) K-S20…..was a fun new character.
(3) Donnie Yen is a blast as the blind, force believing, Chirrut Îmwe.
(4) Darth Vader’s final scene in the movie is kick-ass….actually it was so awesome compared to his other scenes….that I wish that it was his one and only scene in this movie.
(5) It was nice to see Peter Cushing making a return appearance to the Star Wars Universe.
(6) The finale is solid action.
What I did not like: (1) Forest Whitaker seemed to bring back his character from Battlefield Earth in this one.
(2) Felicity Jones and Diego Luna are fine in the two lead roles….but at no time did I buy their “romantic” chemistry.
(3) At times I felt I was watching a Dirty Dozen remake versus a Star Wars movie.
(4) Another “orphan” storyline
(5) Some of the logic at the end really left me scratching my head. Lots of questions about the transmission of the plans…and how Princess Lea is on a ship so close to the epic battle.
(6) The pacing of the movie…especially the first 90 minutes was very very slow….I actually found myself nodding off a few times during that stretch of the movie.
Final thought: Star Wars fans should of course see this movie…but in my mind it is only slightly better than Attack of the Clones. As for the 3D….it was not worth the extra expense.
Ranked 5th of 9 movies on my Star Wars Movie Ranking page.

Hey Bruce, seems we had similar thoughts on Rogue One. Maybe it will grow on us on subsequent viewings. When Darth Vader went into action at the end the film went up a gear, but it was almost over by then. The CG facial renditions of certain actors were state of the art but they still looked a little off. I saw it in 2D. I’ll get the 3D edition on Blu-ray.
I agree with you about the CG facial renditions….although Cushing looked off…it was still good to see him when he popped up. I have noticed by 3D set up at home often works better than the 3D in theaters….so I hope the 3D will be awesome when it hits home entertainment. Thanks for the visit and the comment.
Sorry you did not enjoy the movie as much as I did.
Hey Stein….we can agree to disagree. 🙂
