Disney Movies

Want to know the best Disney movies?  How about the worst Disney movies?  Curious about Disney  box office grosses or which Disney movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Disney movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which one got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place …. because we have all of that information and much more.

When Walt Disney decided to produce a full length animated movie in the mid-1930s … almost everybody thought it was a disaster waiting to happen.  It even earned the nickname …. Disney’s Folly.  While it turns out the man knew what he was doing…..as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs become one of the biggest box office hits of all time.  Since then the Disney company has been producing one hit movie after another for almost the last 80 years.  So far there have been 54 Disney Animated Movies.

This page will rank those 54 Disney movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Movies that were only distributed by Disney did not make the list…..so you will not find any Pixar or Disney Toons movies…in other words if the animation was done outside of Disney it does not make the list. If you are interested in Pixar movies you can check out my Pixar page here.  Another page you might be interested in checking out is Walt Disney Live Action Movies 1937 – 1967.

Disney Movies Ranked In Chronological Order With Ultimate Movie Rankings Score (1 to 5 UMR Tickets) *Best combo of box office, reviews and awards.

Disney Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Disney movies by the voice stars
  • Sort Disney movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Disney movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort Disney movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Disney movie received.
  • Sort Disney movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. The last chart I would be very interested in seeing the ranking by release date, and ever a graph of the score from 1937-2014 so you get an idea of how they have done over time.

    1. Hey Jack….thanks for the suggestion…I will have to see if I can come up with a graph like you are suggesting….I appreciate you checking out my Disney page.

  2. I think your system is a great attempt to evaluate movies as objectively as possible. I certainly admire all the work you put into it! I did notice two small things though: “The Artistocats” should be “The Aristocats” and “Wreck-It-Ralph” should be “Wreck-It Ralph.” That’s it though. Please keep up the great work!

    1. @Spencer. Thanks for the kind words. I have had a blast doing these pages. I like the fact that normally my system does a good job of ranking these movies. Granted every list every made is a list somebody will not agree with. I fixed those two errors. Thanks for pointing those out.

  3. Neat site. Came here from IMDB and I like your formula. I would be interested in seeing exactly how it’s calculated, but it’s a neat idea. I was surprised to see Beauty and the Beast at number one. That has always been my favorite and I didn’t think it had such widespread recognition.

    1. @Dan….thanks for the nice words. At the top of this page there is a link that says About Cogerson Movie Score…it gives a detailed response to your question. The Beauty and The Beast got number one for a few reasons…huge box office numbers (4th biggest Disney hit)…great reviews (4th highest Disney movie) but were it really picked up points…5 Oscar nominations (including Best Picture…which really helped its score) and 2 wins.

It is not a perfect system….but generally it does a good job of getting the better movies to the top of the rankings. I have done over 20,000 movies so far….and they go from The Godfather at #1 to #Deadfall (Cage disaster) at #21,345.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my page.

  4. Two movie titles are incorrect:

Should be Cinderella (not Cinderalla) and The Sword in the Stone (not The Sword and the Stone).

    1. @animated fan….thanks for the heads up….I greatly appreciate you pointing those errors….they have been corrected.

  5. Planes and Planes: Fire and Rescue should not be on the list as they were not made by Walt Disney Animation Studios. They were both made by DisneyToon Studios (which made the direct to video sequels and the Disney Fairies films).

If DisneyToon is being included on the list, movies like The Jungle Book 2, Return to Neverland, The Tigger Movie, and others would pull down the average significantly.

    1. @jonathan….after some more research…I have decided to take the two Plane movies off the list as well as The Goofy Movie…so that gets the total down to 54 movies…thanks for the suggestion.
