Disney Movies

Want to know the best Disney movies?  How about the worst Disney movies?  Curious about Disney  box office grosses or which Disney movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Disney movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which one got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place …. because we have all of that information and much more.

When Walt Disney decided to produce a full length animated movie in the mid-1930s … almost everybody thought it was a disaster waiting to happen.  It even earned the nickname …. Disney’s Folly.  While it turns out the man knew what he was doing…..as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs become one of the biggest box office hits of all time.  Since then the Disney company has been producing one hit movie after another for almost the last 80 years.  So far there have been 54 Disney Animated Movies.

This page will rank those 54 Disney movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Movies that were only distributed by Disney did not make the list…..so you will not find any Pixar or Disney Toons movies…in other words if the animation was done outside of Disney it does not make the list. If you are interested in Pixar movies you can check out my Pixar page here.  Another page you might be interested in checking out is Walt Disney Live Action Movies 1937 – 1967.

Disney Movies Ranked In Chronological Order With Ultimate Movie Rankings Score (1 to 5 UMR Tickets) *Best combo of box office, reviews and awards.

Disney Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Disney movies by the voice stars
  • Sort Disney movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Disney movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort Disney movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Disney movie received.
  • Sort Disney movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. Hi Bruce; You’ve got to love Disney. So many animated classics. They went through a slump in the seventies but made a big comeback with the “Little Mermaid”. “Fantasia” is a brilliant piece of art. The first Disney film I ever saw in a theater was “Robin Hood”. I’m not sure what my favorite Disney film is. Growing up I think it was “Pinnochio”. In recent years, the Japanese studio Ghibli and the amazing Hayao Miyazaki have replaced Disney as my favorite animated filmmakers but Disney will always have a sentimental importance to me.

    1. Hey Rob…I think our childhood was ripped off when it comes to new Disney classics…..sure we got the classic re-releases….but no new classics…unless you consider Robin Hood, The Sword in the Stone or The Rescuers classics….I want my money back…lol.

I am not familiar with Ghibli or Hayao Miyazaki but I will make an active attempt to check out some of their work.

It seems we have the same memories….one of the first movies I remember seeing was Robin Hood….I got to go with the neighbor’s family…and I felt like such a big man …being about 5 or 6 and going somewhere without my parents… it is always good to read your comments.

  2. Sunday night I was trying to get to bed early so I’d get plenty of sleep for an early morning, but I wanted to let your readers know that Robert Shumann, half of a brother team who wrote the music to Disney classics during Disney’s lifetime died this weekend. His brother’s name is Richard. The timing was odd because this hub of yours was days old at the time he died.

    1. This page was included as a recommended page in the weekly archived version of our newsletter. Congratulations.

    2. Hey Flora…thanks for the update on Robert Shumann, sad news but he leaves behind some very memorable work……and thanks for letting me know that this hub made the newsletter…..it is a fun hub and seems to be drawing some traffic.

  3. Great pages are becoming the standard with you. The pre computer Disney animators were amazing. Each frame a work of art. I still get laughed at around here when watching an early animated Disney production. Thanks for the great work here.

    1. Hey mckbirdbks…..the Disney classics look amazing on blu-ray….I think the best one is Pinocchio….it is like watching a brand new movie. I appreciate the compliment and the visit….both are greatly appreciated.

  4. love this. disney movies have always been my favorites. it is hard to pick a fovorite, actually it is hard to pick a second favorite as cinderella is my all time favorite and will probably always be. (it was playing at a movie theater and we went to see it on our honeymoon) i can’t remember what the first disney movie i saw was, maybe it was cinderells. i do remember going to see Peter Pan with my third grade class on a field trip. since it was made in 1953 that means it was a brand new movie when i saw it. fantasia is one of my favorites and i don’t understand why it didn’t get nominated for anything. maybe because it has no plot and is a series of vingettes. i love lady and the tramp, i can hear peggy lee singing “he’s a Tramp”. Aladdin was really good with robin williams, but it had a lot of topical humor that will get lost over the years.

Walt Disney has aways been one of my heros because of his imagination. Dr. Seuss is another one. i need to see the Lorax.

    1. Hey mimic….glad you liked my Disney animated hub….and just so you know I am trying to figure out how I can find all the Disney live action movies….which was a suggestion from you awhile ago.

Interesting about your memories of the classic Disney movies….I have some myself….but they are for the not classic Disney movies like Robin Hood and The Sword and the Stone. We have many of these Disney movies on blu-ray, and the quality is outstanding especially for Pinocchio and Fantasia….and they are waiting for you on your next visit.

The Lorax is a huge hit, so I imagine it will be in theaters for awhile…..thanks for comment.
