1. Donald Siegel was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1912.

2.  In 1945 Don Siegel directed two shorts (1945’s Hitler Lives and 1945’s Star in the Night ) which both won Academy Awards®.

3. Don Siegel was the first director to be credited by the Director’s Guild of America’s universal pseudonym Alan Smithee, for Death of a Gunfighter (1969). Siegel wished to remain uncredited because he felt the film’s star, Richard Widmark, ruined the picture by insisting on creative control that usurped Siegel’s authority as director, and also because Widmark had fired original director Robert Totten, who completed most of the picture, and Siegel felt that if anyone should be credited for the film it should have been Totten and not him.

4. Don Siegel while filming Flaming Star (1960) starring Elvis Presley, he drove Presley’s new Rolls-Royce for two weeks.

5. Don Siegel was the mentor to Sam Peckinpah and Clint Eastwood.

6. During filming of Dirty Harry (1971), Don Siegel fell ill with the flu, and Clint Eastwood stepped in temporarily as director, during a critical scene involving a suicide jumper. This was Eastwood’s first unbilled credit as director.

7. Clint Eastwood dedicated 1992’s Unforgiven to Don Siegel.

  1. Don Siegel. one of my favorite directors, thanks to Dirty Harry and Body Snatchers.

    I’ve seen 13 out of the 30 on the chart, less than I thought. Favorites include – Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Coogan’s Bluff, Dirty Harry, Flaming Star, Charley Varrick, Escape from Alacatraz and The Shootist.

    Dirty Harry tops all the charts, it was no.1 on my video chart too.

I have seen 4 of your favorites and 3 of your others. I actually saw Telefon in theaters with my parents so many moons ago. Somewhat surprised that two of his better known movies made your others list…..Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Shootist….both would be on my favorites list. As for Escape From Alcatraz, it is a good watch…and I would recommend it….that was the last Clint/Don movie. Good stuff as always.
