  1. 1 STEVE: The Canadians are certainly getting their day in the sun! When I watched the young Donald Sutherland all those years ago playing the detective Klute I could never have envisaged that he would ultimately become one of the screen’s best character actors. For me one of his stocks in trade is that wonderful distinctive voice which you could almost imagine was coated in silk.

2 He made a Dry White Season with Mr M in 1989 and in an interview Donald amusedly told how his own wife, a great Mumbles fan, couldn’t be kept away from the set when Mr M was filming his Oscar nominated cameo in that flick

3 Best posters I thought were Puppet Masters, Lock Up, Fallen, Dr Terror’s House of Horrors, Casanova, The Eagle has Landed giving Donald a chance to co-star with Sir Maurice, and the entire run of ones for The Hunger Games franchise. Most pleasing stills to my mind were Donald and Keifer, the Space Cowboys quartet, Donald with Sir Sean in The great Train Robbery, Donald with Clint in Kelly’s Heroes, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and the balcony scene.

4 Overall I rated your Sutherland video 97% You and WH agree on just 1 of Donald’s Top 5 for artistic merit [see below] and if my recollection is correct that is the lowest level of agreement that you two have had for any Top 5.

5 Please see also my post today to Bruce in which I mention my holiday. I will look in on you again when I get back.
BRUCE’S TOP 5 SUTHERLAND FILMS in RANKING ORDER
    Ordinary People
    The Dirty Dozen
    Hunger Games 2013
    Invasion of Body Snatchers
    Pride and Prejudice

    STEVE’S TOP 5
    MASH
    Klute
    The Dirty Dozen
    Don’t Look Now
    JFK

I think that on balance I would agree with your selection except for MASH which I’ve never liked

    1. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, rating, trivia and comparison, much appreciated.

Glad you liked the posters and stills.

I’m not a huge fan of MASH either but it was critically acclaimed. Set during the Korean war in the early 1950s it was really a commentary on the deeply unpopular Vietnam war which was still raging in 1970.

One of my favorite films from this chart is Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a remake of the classic 1956 movie. I saw it at the cinema back in the 70s and I remember the use of surround sound made the movie even more creepy and unnerving. The ending was bleak, the original had a tacked on ending which gave hope the alien invasion could be stopped.

I enjoyed The Hunger Games series. I liked the characters, especially Katniss as played by Jennifer Lawrence and even the evil President Snow, played with charisma by Donald Sutherland. I see that Bruce’s chart has the 4 films in the same ranking order I have them. Yes we do agree sometimes. 🙂

Five of Donald’s films scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Ordinary People, Catching Fire, Don’t Look Now, Klute and MASH. Three scored 9 – Day of the Locust, JFK and The Dirty Dozen.

Highest rated at IMDB was JFK, which scored 8.

Highest rated at Rotten Tomatoes was Don’t Look Now with 8.9.

Top rated on Bruce’s chart is Ordinary People with 8.8.

Enjoy your holiday in the sun Bob. More videos up when you return. Take care.

p.s. Flora is enjoying this mini-wave of Canadian actors, one more due tomorrow. 🙂

      1. HI STEVE

1 Thanks for the parting feedback.I agree that my dislike of MASH is a minority viewpoint

2 I have already explained to Flora that some supposed Canadian actors have seen themselves as reincarnated Spaniards and/or Scotsmen. My Glenn is one example and I don’t think he would have been too pleased to see himself described as just a Canadian. He was much more than that over his many lives. So Canadian regulars of this site shouldn’t claim Glenn as one of their own. Nevertheless they will probably try in the way that Flora claims that a number of my idols are HERS.

3 I don’t know what the beliefs of Donald and Christopher are on the subject but actually maybe because he played Sherlock Holmes I thought for years that Plummer was English and like Archie Leach had crossed the pond. I suppose though that uninformed moviegoers who heard Mr M’s wonderful Shakespearean diction in Julius Caesar might have thought that HE was English. Indeed as Mr M’s great friend and fellow thespian William Redfield ***said “Dammit he was better than those English!”
***Hamlet (1964) Death Wish and One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest

4 Anyway I look forward to seeing what you have on the menu for my return from hols and in the meantime enjoy yourself.

        1. Hey Bob and Steve….first of all…I have added Steve’s Video to this page. Good stuff from the both of you. Steve and my Top are way off….probably one of the biggest differences I remember seeing. I have always felt that Sutherland deserved some Oscar love. Certainly his performances in Ordinary People, Don’t Look Now and Pride and Prejudice deserved some award props.

Sutherland helped Brando get that Supporting nomination…..but he got left off again for that movie too. Good stuff. Looking forward to another Canuck…..I am after all half Canuck myself….lol.

          1. Thanks for the video share Bruce, mucho apreciado!

The only movie we have in common in our top 5’s was The Dirty Dozen. Too many recent movies in your top 5, mine are all classics. [cue Bruce snarling]. 😉

          2. Hey Steve….glad to share it…..which reminds me that I need to share your Billy Shatner video too….been slacking off these last couple of days…lol. Some of the newer movies have wide fluctuations from when they come out….and after they have “settled”. That is why WoC has been working on getting that part of the page “dynamic” as well. As I said in another comment….this might be the subject our Top 5s are the least alike….but that is ok.

  2. The only Donald Sutherland movies I know are Pride and Prejudice and The Hunger Games…I loved him as the detached but very loving father in P&P, so imagine my surprise when he walked out as the most evil character in THG franchise!

    1. Yes! It does surprise you when a nice man plays an evil character.

I remember when I saw Once Upon a Time in the West which is too mature for you now – you can see it when you are an adult – I was shocked because Henry Fonda’s character is totally evil! He was usually a good guy. At the very least he was a character who had both good and bad qualities in other films. But in Once Upon a Time in the West he was EVIL with a capital E!

I have to say that, well, – I love Henry Fonda as a bad guy in that film.

I have not yet seen the films which you have seen. They are a bit too recently made for me to have seen them – yet.

      1. Hey Flora…great point about Henry Fonda in OUATITW…..Fonda did not play the bad guy too often….but when he did…..wow….was it impressive.

    2. I have failed you when it comes to Donald Sutherland….please forgive me. So many great Sutherland movies I could have made you watch…..The Dirty Dozen, Kelly’s Heroes, MASH, Don’t Look Now, Body Snatchers, Great Train Robbery and so many others…..how did a drop the ball? Hiding my head in shame. On the bright side…at least you are aware of Mr. Sutherland….that has to count for something.

        1. I think some of the movies “mama bear” would not let me show her….but she is 22 now….and the blinkers need to come off…..lol.

  3. Hi

I can’t believe that he never got a nomination, considering the body of work in all those years. No doubt if he lives to 90, he’ll get an honorary Oscar at the Governor’s Ball. I really loved him in Ordinary People, I’ve always thought it was one of the best movies that deals with family grief. I recently watched Pride and Prejudice, he played Mr. Bennett, he was absolutely fantastic. He’s made so many great films like Klute and Look Back in Anger.

    1. How he was not recognized for Ordinary People is a huge injustice. I have a page that lists the Top 10 Current Actors who should have an Oscar nomination…..BUT DON’T….he is one of my 10. Since I wrote that page I have had to update it as people have finally gotten nominations….last year Jennifer Jason Leigh came off that list. Maybe Donald will come off that list too. So many great performances for some many years. Hey Oscar people…..give the man some respect.

  4. Hello Bruce,
I’ve seen 13 movies of this great actor. I remember that “the body snatchers” was really anxious me when I saw it. I must have been 13 years old. Even today, I find that the final scene is one of the fastest I’ve seen.

    1. Hey Laurent…..thanks for checking out our latest page. I think Body Snatchers made lots and lots of people anxious. I agree with you 100% about the final scene….I felt like I had to include a picture of that scene. Tally contest..me 44….. Steve 41…..Flora 18….and you 13. Thanks for the comment.

  5. Your 400 movie tweet peaked my interest. This site is incredible. I am a huge movie fan but I never knew this existed. I think you need to promote this page. You gotta spend money to make money. I will be back for future visits. Great find!

    1. Hey Babe…glad my tweet reached you. Thanks for such kind words. This is my hobby…so it is hard to justify spending just to promote these pages. I feel the website is growing pretty nicely. I hope to see you back again…..and FYI…..we do requests in case you find an actor or actress not in our index…..thanks for a great comment.

      1. I would love to spend lots of money on my hobby. Cogerson likes to call me a movie historian, but I don’t get paid anything to write about movies either. 🙂

        1. You need to find a game show….and put your classic movie knowledge to the test….I am sure you would do well…..I feel I know a decent amount….but nothing compared to your knowledge.

          1. Thanks! I fear most game shows would focus on today’s stars, however, like Celebrity name game – hilarious show, but some contestants don’t know the names of people from before they were born…

          2. TCM should have a game show…..and then you would rock and roll on that show.
