Douglas Fairbanks (1883-1939) was an American actor.  Fairbanks was one of the first movie stars. He was best known for his swashbuckling roles in silent films including The Thief of BagdadRobin Hood, and The Mark of Zorro.  His IMDb page shows 51 acting from 1915 to 1937.  This page will rank Douglas Fairbanks movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.  To do well in our overall rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences, and get some award recognition.  This comes from a request by Bob and Dan. Sadly we were unable to locate any box office grosses on his movies made from 1915 to 1919.

  1. The First King of Hollywood gets a UMR page, nice.

Have to confess I’ve only seen 3 of His Majesty’s films – Robin Hood, The Black Pirate and The Thief of Bagdad (which I have on blu-ray).

I’d like to see some of the others, such as The Three Musketeers, Iron Mask and The Mark of Zorro, but only if the prints have been cleaned up a bit. There are plenty of silent classics on youtube but the picture quality is usually poor.

    Nice work Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve…..I hope you are enjoying your extended break from YouTube. Tally counts are not too impressive….but his movies are almost a century old. I agree with you about the quality of the movies on YouTube. Thanks for the vote up and the visit.

  2. HI BRUCE
Thanks for bringing-out so quickly the Doug Fairbanks new page. His mega star status in the silent era certainly well-merits the page. Good trivia about Woodrow Wilson.

It is also good to see collected together the adjusted domestic grosses for what many historians would regard as his prime classics: his 8 greatest swashbuckling/action/adventure movies which are:

    Three Musketeers
    Mark of Zorro
    Thief of Bagdad
    Robin Hood
    Black Pirate
    Iron Mask
    The Gaucho
Don Q Son of Zorro – the only one not to crash the Cogerson magical $ 100 million mark.

Their combined total domestic gross is around $1.5 billion according to your figures which averages out at a whopping $190 million per movie and that helps illustrates why he was such a big star in his day, up there with other greats such as Chaplin/Gish/Keaton and of course Doug’s own wife Mary.

    1. Hey Bob…glad you liked your requested Douglas Fairbanks Sr. page. I am thinking when things get back to normal I can do some research runs that might unlock some of those missing 1910s movies. Glad you were able to do some box office research using our latest table. Good stuff as always.

  3. I have seen 5 of these Douglas Fairbanks movies.

The HIGHEST ranked movie I have seen is The Thief of Bagdad.

The highest ranked film I have NOT seen is The Black Pirate.

The LOWEST ranked film I have seen is The Private Life of Don Juan.

    All are favourites:

    The Thief of Bagdad
    The Mark of Zorro
    The Three Musketeers
    Robin Hood
The Private Life of Don Juan

By the way, according to my letterboxd account, Fairbanks along with his wife Mary Pickford must have been extras in other silents. Both of them were in Ben Hur.

    1. Hey Flora…thanks for the visit and the tally count. Your tally of 5 easily tops the charts. Steve has seen 3…and I have seen one…The Thief of Bagdad…which I just saw earlier this year. I am thinking there is a story behind so many stars appearing as extras in Ben-Hur. Good stuff as always.

  4. Well you’ve done it now. The first person, big star anyway, that does not have even 1 connection on the 2020 list. Sad isn’t it.

On the other hand Mr. Fairbanks started United Artists and also had 11 Oscar winning co-stars.

    1. Hey Dan….wow….that does not happen much…..nobody on the Oracle list. I do not remember how many Douglas Fairbanks Jr. had on the list….but it is more than 0. I would say 11 Oscar winning co-stars is pretty impressive….due to limited movies and only making a handful of movies after the Oscars were created. Good stuff as always.
