  1. Give me Papillon, Marathon Man and Lenny, after that he stopped trying he became too mainstream. Nice tribute, as I enjoyed reading about his movie life.

    1. Well hinton1966 all the movies you mention were in made in the early part of his career….but I think he still made some great movies after the 1970s….Rain Man is outstanding….I appreciate your comments.

  2. There is no arguing with this:

    Rain Man-he is amazing

    Marathon Man-thriller

    All the President’s Men-thriller

    1. Hey mckbirdbks…..I agree with your thoughts on all three movies….thanks for checking out the hub and thanks for letting me know about the character map….it is making writing these pages a little easier….thanks for the comments….PS. Maybe your suggested Billy Holden will finally win the poll.

  3. Awesome Page! My favorite Hoffman movie has to be either Tootsie or Kramer v. Kramer with Rain Man in second. I voted for William Holden, I don’t know too much about his career and I think it’d be interesting

  4. My favourite Hoffman films are in order:

    Rain Man-he is amazing

    Marathon Man-thriller

    All the President’s Men-thriller

I’m usually not able to actually order my favourites and thus write them alphabetically or by movie score, but this is one case where I can order them based on how much I love the film and how often I watch them. I can’t do this with a person like Peck, for example.

    I have seen:

7 of his top ten box office hits, five of his top 10 critical hits, and 6 of his top 10 movie Score films. That seems like a lot until I tell you that overall I have seen only ten of his films, not quite a quarter of his career.

The highest film I’ve seen on the movie list is Rain Man. The lowest film I’ve seen on the list is Finding Neverland at #18.

Films I haven’t seen but are looking forward to seeing are, in Movie Score order:

    Papillon

    Runaway Jury

Agatha-I know! I should have seen this already

    I Heart Huckabees

The ten films I have seen are in Movie Score order:

Rain Man-also my favourite Tom Cruise film

Midnight Cowboy-funny how this was rated X but if released today would be rated R

Tootsie-one of the few comedies I have seen multiple times that does not star Cary Grant. I’ve performed the song at the end of the movie.

The Graduate-I love the music, but actually, this is probably what I would list tenth of the ten films I’ve seen. I’m not sure I would have seenit multiple times if I didn’t love Simon and Garfunkle music.

All the President’s Men-I love this film. an example where the Press actually did make a difference in the world of politics. The real Deep Throat recently died. He revealed his identity himself shortly before then.

Dick Tracy-fun, but not a film I’ve seen twice

Marathon Man-”Is it safe?” My favourite Olivier performance

    Wag the Dog

    Finding Neverland.

Films I have no interest in ever seeing even though they are on the top 10 critics or box office hits in alphabetical order:

    Kramer vs. Kramer

    Little Big Man

    Meet the Fockers

    1. Hey Flora…..first of all I am shocked that you have not seen Agatha. If you would have told me before that you had only seen one Dustin Hoffman….I would have bet serious money that movie would have been Agatha. Good thing I do not live in Las Vegas.

Well we agree on Rain Man and All The President’s Men…and Marathon Man would be near my top 3.

Well looking at your list it looks like you have most of his most famous roles covered with the exception of Kramer vs Kramer and Papillon(which is more a McQueen movie than Hoffman movie)

-I Heart Huckabees was not an easy movie to finish, I know it has some fans…..but I am not one of them.

-Olivier is awesome in Marathon Man….glad he is not my dentist.

-I think Midnight Cowboy might get a PG13 rating if it got released in 2011.

And finally another reason why I like All The President’s Men so much…..my father worked at the Washington Post during the time frame of the Watergate story……he shared lots of great behind the scenes stuff about that time….his biggest complaint about the movie was the fact that the movie showed Redford and Hoffman doing lots of their writing on the floor with the other writers….he said the reality was….. everybody was so paranoid that all the writing and talking took place behind closed doors and was very hush hush….not something anybody on the Post would even mention to somebody who was not working on the story.

  5. Another fantastic review. Little Big Man is one of my all time favorite movies. I like the narration approach it used. Following that would be Rain Man. I liked the graduate not so much for him, but Anne. I saw it in my junior year of high school around 70-71, so I guess I was behind the times. I saw it at a ‘drive-in’ theater. Hey what an idea for a movie page? – Drive In Theaters.

    1. Hey tsmog, thanks for the compliment and for checking out my Hoffman hub. I agree Little Big Man is one of the first westerns I ever really noticed…talking a time long ago….I remember Little Big Man playing on the Sunday Night Movie of the week numerous times….that was back in the 1970s when Sunday Night Movies was the only way to see movies. Interesting idea about drive-ins….I was recently reading an article about the peak and death of drive-ins…..at one point there were thousands and thousands of drive-ins…thanks for the comments.
