Want to know the best Eddie Murphy movies?  How about the worst Eddie Murphy movies?  Curious about Eddie Murphy’s box office grosses or which Eddie Murphy movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Eddie Murphy movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Before Eddie Murphy became one of the our most popular movie stars, he gained his first fame with his 5 year stint on Saturday Night Live (1980-84). During those years, Murphy performed numerous skits with his very popular characters Gumby, Mr. Robinson (spoof of Mr. Rogers) and a grown up Buckwheat. While still a regular cast member of Saturday Night Live he began his movie career. His first movie was the action comedy hit 48 HRS (1982) with Nick Nolte. He followed that movie with the even bigger hit Trading Places (1983). In 1984 he appeared in his biggest hit of his career, Beverly Hills Cop (1984)….which is ranked #40 on the all-time movie list of blockbusters….using inflated box office grosses.

Over the next ten years Murphy would appear in numerous box office hits like: Coming To America (1988), Beverly Hills Cop 2 (1987), The Golden Child (1986) and Another 48 HRS (1990). After the box office disappointments of Beverly Hills Cop III (1994) and 1995’s Vampire in Brooklyn, Murphy started appearing in successful family-friendly movies like The Nutty Professor and Doctor Doolittle movies. In 2006 Eddie Murphy received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar® nomination and a Golden Globe® win for Dreamgirls (2006). Eddie Murphy’s movies have grossed over 3.7 billion at the U.S. box office. Only Tom Hanks and his 3.8 billion can beat Murphy’s box office number. Did you know the last R rated movie Eddie Murphy was 1999’s Life?

His IMDb page shows over 60 acting credits since 1982. This page will rank Eddie Murphy movies from Best to Worst in seven different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in theaters were not included in the rankings.

  1. Coming To American, 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop were good movies. Have not seen too many of the other movies but keep these Movie Pages coming Cogerson. It must take time and effort to do all these pages. THANKS A LOT!

    1. Hey Bern1960…..so it sounds like you have not seen an Eddie Murphy movie since the 1980s….I wonder how many people are in the same boat as you…..if you throw out the Shrek movies he has not had a solid starring role hit that audiences liked since Nutty Professor in 1996. That is long time….as for time to do the movie pages….the newer actors do not actually take very long….the older actors required lots of research…..thanks for the compliment

  2. Back in the eighties, my buddies and I were big Eddie Murphy fans. We went to see all his films. We rented “Beverly Hills Cop” a zillion times on VHS. His career has gone through a lot of ups-and-downs since then (He had a hard time living down “Pluto Nash”, and “Norbit” was awful) but he’s reinvented himself as a family-friendly star, which is an unusual turn of events, considering how edgy he was in his early years.

I think his best performance was in “Dream Girls” (where he showed he could sing much better than he did in that horrible album, ‘My girl wants to party all the time’). I liked him best as Axel Foley in the “Beverly Hills Cop” films (Even though the last one was horribly unfunny). He’s a very talented film star but I don’t like his stand-up routine.

    1. Hey Rob…..it is amazing to me that when I was a teenager …Murphy was on the cutting edge….R-rated humor….and probably the biggest star for 8 or more years….I even remember his trailer for The Golden Child…where he was in a blizzard and yelling at the audience members for sitting in a warm theater….people went to the movies just to watch that trailer…..now my kids only think of him as a Disney Dad….amazing how times have changed….thanks for reading….I have made some progress on Myrna Loy…but still a ways away from a completed movie page

  3. He was good in his earlier days, but he’s gone off the boil i think. I’m waiting for James Cagney though.

    1. attempted humour…thanks for stopping by….I think he could rebound with Tower Heist with Ben Stiller this November…..as for James Cagney ….he has been done for a couple of weeks now

  4. I’ve watched Eddie over a 100 times in “Trading Places” on VHS…and he saved Saturday Night Live. Thanks for sharing Cogerson.;)

    1. Hey mentalist acer….for me it was 48 Hours that we watched over and over…..not that we did not watch Trading Places numerous times….especially since I was madly in love with Jamie Lee Curtis back then

  5. It looks like the 1980 decade was very good to Eddie Murphy. Since then he has turned from a Richard Pryor clone to a Bill Cosby clone. Which if you ever saw Murphy’s Delirious you would think is funny how life has changed him

    1. Yep Murphy started with a bang….looking at his top Movie Score movies….of the first four movies he made….3 finished 1,2,3….with only Best Defense scoring low….and that was a Dudley Moore movie with a few scences with Murphy causing problems with a tank ……thanks for reading and commenting
