Possibly Interesting Facts About Elizabeth Taylor
1. Elizabeth Taylor was born in London, England. Her famous double eyelashes and her violet eyes caused many people to suggest to her mother that Taylor should try out for the role of Bonnie Blue (Scarlet’s daughter) in Gone With The Wind. Her mother refused the idea.
2. In 1942, two studios (MGM and Universal Pictures) got in a bidding war for her services. Universal signed her to a 7 year contract but canceled the contract after her first movie 1942’s There’s One Born Every Second. MGM then signed her and she became a huge child star.
3. Elizabeth Taylor’s first hit was 1944’s National Velvet. She also appeared in the very first Lassie movie 1943’s Lassie Come Home. The first time she received top billing was in 1946’s The Courage of Lassie.
4. As an older teenager she became a young bride in the box office hits 1947’s Life With Father and 1950’s Father of the Bride. The success of these two movies paved the way for her success as an adult actress. From 1950 to 1966 she was the most successful actress working. During this time frame 7 of her movies were nominated for Oscars® for Best Picture….1950’s Father of the Bride, 1951’s A Place In The Sun, 1952’s Ivanhoe, 1956’s Giant, 1958’s Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, 1963’s Cleopatra and 1966’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe.
5. Elizabeth Taylor earned 5 Oscar® nominations for Best Actress winning 2 times. Her two wins were for 1960’s Butterfield 8 and 1966’s Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolfe. Her other three nominations were for 1957’s Raintree Country, 1958’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and 1959’s Suddenly, Last Summer.
6. Probably her most famous role was in 1963’s Cleopatra. Even though it is ranked on the all-time inflated box office chart in 40th place with over 546 million dollars, Cleopatra was considered a disappointment at the box office. This was due to the outrageous and out of control film’s budget.
7. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton worked together in 12 projects. 10 are movies listed in this page the other two are 1972’s Divorce Hers-Divorce His(tv movie) and Anne of the Thousand Days(Taylor is uncredited).
8. Elizabeth Taylor was married 8 times including two times to Richard Burton. Her husbands…Conrad Hilton (from famous Hilton hotel family) Michael Widling (two boys came out of this marriage), Michael Todd (one daughter out of this marriage), Eddie Fisher (adopted daughter out of this marriage), Burton, John Warner (US Senator) and Larry Fortensky (met at Betty Ford clinic).
9. Elizabeth Taylor said she had three loves in her life….Michael Todd, Richard Burton and jewelry. Pieces of her jewelry collection were recently auctioned off for 115 million dollars. AT LONG LAST BRUCE. I believe that Elizabeth Taylor was a good actress and a very beautiful woman. I have seen most but not all of her movies. Giant was on TV recently so I watched it once again – cannot count how many times I have seen Giant. That is interesting as to how much her jewelry went for. Her heirs must be sitting pretty with lots of wealth. Butterfield Eight and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof are very good films. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE PAGE. I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH
Hey BERN1960 glad you liked this hub. Sorry it took so long to get this published. I just got through watching Under Milk Wood today….and it was horrible…..it is one of the last movies she did with Richard Burton….and it even had Peter O’Toole as well. I know Giant is one of your favorites….and it is one of Rock Hudson best performances.
As for her jewelry…that 115 million sale was just some of her jewelry….I think her children held on to another 35 million of her jewelry. Thanks for the comment.
Hello. I did not expect a laugh, but the list surprised me. First ‘Giant’ is a big movie; bigger than most people seem to think. But to see #4 The Flintstones (1994), on the list just made me laugh. Her career is stellar. I would say she was one of the most well rounded actress in Hollywood history. From her roll #3 Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) to the complete transition to #7 in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) are at opposite ends of the scales in my opinion.
The is another great addition to your series.
Hey mckbirdbks….thanks for stopping by….true The Flintstones was one of her biggest box office hits…..but it ranked all the way down in 43rd spot according to critics and audiences. I figured you would mention Giant as your Emerald Wells Cafe series takes place during the same time frame. Thanks for the comment and the very nice compliment.
Hey Coge! Liz Taylor…..the Beauty of all Beauties……so gorgeous she almost didn’t look “real”…..more like a porcelain doll.
So many movies, so many leading men, so many years, so many awards…………soooooo many husbands!
GREAT page……I loved Elizabeth!
Hey fpherj48…..thanks for stopping by. I agree with your comment 100%…..she was indeed a beauty….growing up I did not realize she was such a beauty in her youth….but as I watched her classic movies I became very aware of how stunning she was back in the 1950s.
I am from Virginia and for about 6 years she was married to one of our senators….he spoke at my brother’s high school graduation and the rumor was he was bringing his wife…..so I went up to this heavy set lady with black hair and asked if she was Elizabeth Taylor….she laughed and said she was the principal’s wife not the senator’s wife…..turns out she skipped my brother’s graduation….but I was close to meeting her.
I’m Italian; Your List are Great. When I Can See a Box Office List On Jerry Lewis or Abbott & Costello ??
Hey Brando….thanks for the visit…I will add Jerry Lewis and Abbott and Costello to my list of people to do….Lewis should be pretty easy….Abbott and Costello will be harder but can be done…..thanks for the suggestions.
Bruce great page. I have a few favourite Elizabeth Taylor movies and think she did comedy rather well but got to show it off rarely. Butterfield 8, Elizabeth walking home in the rain…amazing scene and she is brilliant in that movie. I also liked X, Y and Zee which she was funny in. Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Little Women, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Giant, I could go on. I think it’s such a shame she was lampooned by the likes of Joan Rivers later in life – she was a gifted actress with a BIG private life and she never lived that down.
Hey Jools99….thank for the visit and the comment. Interesting point about her comedic skills….I do not think I have seen any of her funnier roles….but X, Y and Zee(one of the few M. Caine movies I have not seen) is on my list of movies to watch. I think the fact that she was still a major celebrity many many years after her peak shows just how popular she was and still is today\
