  1. Looking at the chart there are two Ethel Barrymore films that I know for sure I’ve seen – The Paradine Case and Portrait of Jennie.

Portrait of Jennie is a classic supernatural romance and one of my favorites. It’s in B/W but some prints are tinted green during the stormy climax.

The Paradine Case is not one of my favorite Hitchcock films.

    1. Hey Steve. I have seen 5 of her movies. Surprisingly The Paradine Case is not one of those five…as that is one of the few American Hitchcock movies that I have not seen. I did like Portrait of Jennie as well. I have also seen Pinky (very dated), None But The Lonely Heart (not one of my favorite Cary Grant movies), The Spiral Staircase (good thriller) and The Farmer’s Daughter (actually do not remember her part at all). Good feedback as always.

  2. Ethel Barrymore has never ever been on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. She has appeared with a few people on the top 1000 including 3 who are still alive.

    1. Hey Dan. Many thanks for posting this information on your vacation. Not surprised that she is not on the Oracle list. Good to see that three of her co-stars are still alive. Douglas, Lansbury and Caron (that was a fun trivia challenge). Good to see Keenan Wynn as her most frequent Oracle co-star…used to love him whenever he popped up in a movie. 18 Oscar winning co-stars is pretty good…especially since she was almost 50 when the Oscars were created. Good feedback as always.

  3. I have seen 17 Ethel Barrymore movies. Eight of them are in the top 10.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is The Spiral Staircase.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Just For You.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is It’s a Big Country. That film and The Story of Three Loves were anthology movies, a kind of film which tends to not do well on UMR score.

    Favourite Ethel Barrymore Movies:

    The Spiral Staircase
    Young at Heart
    Rasputin and the Empress
    The Great Sinner
    Portrait of Jennie
    The Farmer’s Daughter
    The Secret of Convict Lake
    That Midnight Kiss

Other Ethel Barrymore Movies I Have Seen:

    Pinky
The Paradine Case – not a favourite Hitch or Peck movie, but the debut of Louis Jourdan
None But the Lonely Heart – great film, but a bit dark
    The Red Danube
    Night Song
    Deadline, USA
    Kind Lady
    The Story of Three Loves
    It’s a Big Country

Great to see that all three of the great Barrymore siblings have a UMR page now.

    1. Hey Flora….17 tops the combined tally of me, Steve and bob…..actually it was not even close…17 for you and 10 for us (I got half of that total). It’s a Big Country has a huge and awesome cast…..surprised it did not do better at the box office. I would like to one day see that one. I have seen 3 of the favorites you listed. I guess I will go with Steve and pick Portrait of Jennie as my favorite. The Paradine Case is not liked by two huge Hitchcock fans (you and Steve)…maybe I am not missing anything by not seeing it. Yep…all three Barrymore siblings and their great niece Drew have UMR pages. Good feedback as always.

  4. I have seen just 3 of the movies in the above tables: Spiral Staircase. Deadline USA and Young at Heart but enjoyed them all. The latter, Ethel’s penultimate movie, is a remake of 1938’s 4 Daughters, John Garfield’s debut CREDITED movie, John having played an uncredited role in 1933’s Footlight Parade.

At the time of her death in 1959 Ethel had a net worth of just under $70 million in today’s dollars. As she has overall been very successful in all 4 of the acting mediums -big screen [in both silent and talkie eras] stage, television and radio she has unquestionably earned her Cogerson page which is “Voted Up!”

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for sharing your thoughts on Ethel Barrymore. I have seen Spiral Staircase…but not the other two. I did not know Young At Heart was a remake of Garfield’s first movie….good trivia. Good to know Ethel was smart with her money…sadly her brother, Lionel, got into serious IRS trouble….and was working to pay his debt….I do not think (though not sure) he ever recovered from that. I agree she conquered all those acting mediums. Added benefit…she was in Joel’s book…and she is on my Best Supporting Actress Page. Good stuff as always.

      1. HI BRUCE Yes, definitely the icing on the cake for Ethel is being lauded on a Cogerson Best Supporting Actress page, being given a WH page all to herself, and receiving Master Love.

Interesting contrast of the financial status of Ethel and Lionel in their later years. Thanks for sharing it. Comparisons can be made there with what I read about two of the Marx boys. Chio Marx was allegedly a compulsive gambler who squandered a fortune, but according to Chico in an interview before his death Groucho was a miser who hoarded his money .

Apparently in later life the latter lived in an unwashed dingy flat, sat around in ragged clothing and eat cheaply of such stuff as bread and margarine . I read later that some common law gold-digging”child bride” [relatively speaking] got her clutches into Groucho by looking after him in his declining years and inherited his fortune.

  5. “All great stars have instantly recognizable voices, and Ethel Barrymore’s voice was one of the most distinctive. It gave a touch of class to every film she appeared in.” “Barrymore died in 1959, leaving a legacy of glowing supporting portrayals behind her.”
