Sidney is a classic. Thanks for honoring him!!!!
Hey Kathy….thanks for checking out our Sidney tribute….one of the last the legends of Hollywood that is still around.
Glad I noticed this comment, as I had not realized this page had been created in honor of Sidney Poitier’s 91st birthday. This brought me back to his UMR page, where I noticed an exchange on Steve’s excellent video of Poitier’s top 35 films, which I had somehow missed last year.
I have sang the praises of Poitier in other places, so no need to repeat myself here, except to say he fully merits his place as a true Hollywood legend. The Blackboard Jungle, The Defiant Ones, A Raisin in the Sun, Lilies of the Field, A Patch of Blue, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, To Sir With Love, and In the Heat of the Night are for me his defining films. But I enjoyed Poitier in many others, notably opposite Richard Widmark (for the third time) in the doomsday film, The Bedford Incident, where unusually, Poitier’s color was not a factor of relevance in the story, and with James Garner in Duel at Diablo, where he made a really cool and elegant gunfighter in what was perhaps his only western role. Happy birthday M. Poitier!
Hey PhilHoF17….glad this post got you to Steve’s video. Actually his birthday a few days ago is why we now have a Harry Belafonte page. Today Harry is 91….these two co-stars were only born 9 days apart. I would like to think that they are friends today. Good feedback on Poitier and his movies. I actually saw Dual at Diablo the other day. Good feedback as always.
