  1. I have been enjoying a 2nd perusal of your page on Frances Farmer [I see that in your openers you give her Christian name the unisex treatment. I can’t point the finger as I used to stray into Francis/Frances Ford Coppola mentions every now and again!]

I didn’t pick up the first time that whereas the Master awards 4 stars against Farmer’s Among the Living [a film that as I have said I want to see] you give it just a far-less-than-good 55% rating. I am aware that HE is assessing performance whereas YOU are rating the entire film.

Nevertheless there will usually be a correlation between a movie and the quality of its lead performances and in fact in the body of his Farmer review The Master praises Among the Living as a film of “some suspense” So “Traitor!” to you Work Horse – on this occasion you are not respecting your idol’s opinion.

    1. Hey Bob…Frances/Francis can get confusing….but she spells her name with “e” not an “i”. Your comment got me nervous…and I quickly re-checked her spelling….and if I had spelled it wrong somewhere.

Thanks for the clarification on Joel’s ratings…I was going to do a comment for Joel….but I see you have it covered…which works for me…as I am done to leaving for another trip in 36 minutes. As for being a traitor….I can only think about Geoffrey Rush in Pirates of the Caribbean….when it comes to “parlay”.

Elizabeth: Wait! You have to take me to shore. According to the Code of the Order of the Brethren…

Barbossa: First, your return to shore was not part of our negotiations nor our agreement so I must do nothing. And secondly, you must be a pirate for the pirate’s code to apply and you’re not. And thirdly, the code is more what you’d call “guidelines” than actual rules. Welcome aboard the Black Pearl, Miss Turner .

      Joel provides guidelines….versus rules…lol.

  2. Made it again Ma! – but this time back to the bottom as I have seen just one Frances Farmer film: Son of Fury, The Story of Benjamin Blake. Your boy has the wooden spoon on Cogerson yet again Ma.

Her role in that one Is minor but pivotal. She plays Isabel, Benjamin Blake’s false lover. That role was played in the 1953 remake Treasure of the Golden Condor by Anne “Mrs Robinson” Bancroft, though Isabel was called Marie in the 1953 film, in which Cornel Wilde took the earlier Ty Power role. Like Mrs Robinson Isabel/Marie is a nasty piece of work and morally loose.

I actually preferred the 1953 version of the movie, despite Ty being one of my idols in those days, but any critic that I have ever read would support the sort of differential that is in Bruce’s ratings of the two versions which are 67% Power & Farmer/58% Wilde and Bancroft. IMDB for example rates the versions 72%/63% respectively.

Short but sweet – despite the low number of films involved Frances’ box office stats interest me so this is a worthwhile page from my viewpoint. Any viewer in two minds about the matter might well have it settled for him/her by my mentioning that in his 1983 Book of Books Joel Hirschhorn describes even the truncated career that Frances had as “brilliant”.

That starry-eyed star gazer Joel gives 4 stars to only two movies (1) Come and Get It which he describes as “Frances’ “one powerful vehicle—” Sorry Flora! (2) Among the Living a low-budget movie starring Albert Dekker, normally a supporting player. Actually by coincidence Among the Living is the one other Farmer film that I always have had an interest in seeing. Joel praises Dekker’s performance as a deranged twin in it. Joel also highlightsSon of Fury but gives it 3 stars. [Flora’s Rhythm of the Range also attracts 3 stars from Mr Hirschhorn.]

All-in-all therefor this Framer Cogerson page is “Voted Up”.

    1. I was not ignoring the fact that Pierre and Taylor have seen NO Farmer films when I awarded myself the wooden spoon. I was comparing my having seen just one of Frances’ films with Flora having seen two and Flora being one of the 3 most frequent “usual suspects” who enjoy competing for that Cowboy of the Century- type accolade ‘most seen movies’ King/Queen.

Unlike Flora the other two customary competitors -Bruce & Steve – have not yet stuck their heads above the parapet with a proclamation – are they cowering in their tents?

      1. Hey Bob….as I wrote in my last comment….with the poor showing by everybody when it comes to Frances Farmer movies….I am not thinking any prizes would be shared….heck…they might take away our “movie fanatic card”…lol.

    2. Hey Bob. Tally count. Cogerson 3, Flora 2, Bob 1, Steve 1 and Taylor and Pierre 0. I think we all get the wooden spoon….6 movie lovers who have seen a combined 7 Frances Farmer movies. That is not too impressive.

Good breakdown on Son of Fury, The Story of Benjamin Blake…..that helped shake off some cobwebs when it comes to that movie. Always good to see you quoting Joel….makes me so proud….lol.

Gotta admit…I am not too award of Albert Dekker…thanks for shedding light on him….and thanks for the kind words on our Frances page. Good stuff as always.

  3. Hello Bruce,
I never see a film with her but in my memory I think she is one of the most terrible story of a star in Hollywood.
I can’t imagine in a minute or a second , you are a movie star, you are famous in all over the country or the world and then nothing, you disappeared and nobody is here for you.
I saw the film with Miss Lange and I was impressed but I think in that time in Hollywood there were so many people who were paid to protect your reputation, to protect everything and what happened ???..
And all the stars who plaid with her, why they did not try do something because in that time before the war when you were a star in Hollywood you were a god in Olympos… that means you have to protect yourself…and the others…and I think most of the time they do it….
So one of the most very sad story of Hollywood….
    Good day
    Pierre

    1. Hey Pierre. Always good to hear from you. I agree her off screen story is indeed one of the most tragic and horrible ones in Hollywood history. I have not seen Jessica Lange as Frances Farmer in Frances….but after years of avoiding that movie, I am now motivated to finally watch it.

Sounds like Farmer was famous before stars started having entourages. I bet if she had an entourage she probably would not have gone through half of her issues. As for how Hollywood forgot her?….I would say….she was a known star….but not a major star. Most of her movies were low budget movies from Paramount. Paramount was small compared to the massive studios like MGM and Warner Brothers. Good stuff as always.

  4. Sadly she is better known for her off screen issues than her movies. I have not seen any of her movies but I have seen Frances with Jessica Lange. A good movie. Based on that movie she went through hell and back.

    1. Hey Taylor….I think you are correct….she is indeed more famous for her off screen issues than her on screen movies. I have not seen Frances….this page might be me to finally watch that one….which is considered to be Jessica Lange’s best performance. It does sound like she went through “hell and back”. Thanks for the feedback.

  5. Despite the fact that I love classic films, I have only seen 2 Francis Farmer movies. The others have never been available to me.

In order of preference, they are:

Rhythm on the Range – an enjoyable Crosby musical which I consider a favourite
Come and Get It – an interesting drama but not a favourite

    1. Hey Flora…..thanks for sharing your thoughts on Frances Farmer. I have seen one more Farmer movie than you. I have seen Come and Get It (I tracked that one down when I was watching Best Supporting Actor movies…Walter Brennan got an Oscar for that one), The Toast of New York (a Cary Grant movie that I have a hard time remembering…and have no memory of her role in the movie) and Son of Fury (a watched about 15 Tyrone Power movies in about 2 months…now years later most of those movies run together…so like her role in The Toast of New York…I have no memory of her role). So I guess there should be an * by my total. I have not seen Rhythm on the Range but at least I have heard of that one before….not thinking I can say that about most of her movies. Good stuff as always.
