HI BRUCE
Thanks for fixing the error and adding further entries to the table.
The lesson is that the collective wisdom of the Cogerson site is equal to the single expertise of even a professional movie expert like The Master.
It is therefore well worth it for any movie buff to possess a copy of your book in the one format or the other
I’ve seen just 6 of the 54 films on the chart, probably more, can’t remember.
They are – Bombshell, Reckless, Dancing Lady, In Harms Way, Lives of a Bengal Lancer and Mutiny on the Bounty.
I watched In Harms Way a few months ago, didn’t recognise him until I saw his name in the credits, okay he was old but what happened to his face he looked disfigured.
I remember reading that book on Davis vs Crawford, they were both obsessed with him.
Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up.
Hey Steve….you have me beat in the tally contest….as I have only seen 5 of his movies. I have seen half of the ones you have seen…with Mutiny on the Bounty, In Harm’s Way and Dancing Lady being the ones I have seen. Tone seems to have been a favorite among the leading ladies back in the 1930s. Not sure what happened to his face….other than he got old and sick. He was only around a few more years after that Wayne/Douglas movie. Thanks for the visit and the nice words.
I always considered Franchot to be a prominent B list actor. He has 17 movies in the table above that crashed the fabled Cogerson 100 million dollar barrier but in only one of those 17, Five Graves to Cairo, was he the top billed star. Otherwise he tended to play 2nd fiddle or lower to the likes of Gable, Crawford, Harlow and Bing and indeed at times could not command just EQUAL billing to them. Franchot was even 2nd billed to Myrna Loy in Man Proof and for goodness sake SHE got billed above NOBODY in those days! However-
1/I always envied him because he married my Joan and as is illustrated in the photos above he got to hug my Deanna on screen. Indeed he seems to have been quite the ladies’ man in real life and for example drew massive scandalous headlines by getting into a fist fight with actor Tom Neal over luscious blonde actress Barbara Payton. Neal had done a bit of boxing so Franchot ended up unconscious with several fractures. Tone married Barbara but was subsequently able to secure a divorce from her as he produced photos that proved that even after their marriage she continued her relationship with Neal. Sadly she died of heart and liver failure at just 39.
2/other actors admired Franchot. For example he co-starred with Cooper in Lives of a Bengal lancer and Coop later said that without Franchot’s riveting performance that movie wouldn’t have been the success it was- $165 million adjusted domestic gross and 79% rating in the table above.
3/ “Franchot Tone’s golden talent was squandered in glossy, uninspired films.” “His death in 1969, of cancer, robbed both stage and screen of an exceptional performer.” [The Master]
NOBODY on earth could top those last incisive comments so I’ll leave it there by simply registering “Vote Up!” for this welcome new page.
Hey Bob…thanks for checking out our Franchot Tone page. I ran a report last night…..it shows the actors with the most movies in the database that do not have UMR pages….and Mr. Tone was near the top of that listing….so I thought it was time to release those movies.
I agree….he was a good second leading actor. He supported lots of legends like Cooper, Grant, Gable, Wayne and Crawford. I used to get him mixed up with Leslie Howard all the time. I thought of you when I saw those Durbin movies pop up on the table. I had a rough time finding photos of him…..so I had to use the one you mentioned…and I thought….”Well Bob will like it”.
Good stories on the way people thought about him as an actor. Interesting story on Barbara Payton… I had never heard of her before your comment. Good stuff as always.
BRUCE
I can find no record anywhere of Franchot being in Dinner at Eight unless you’ve picked up an uncredited role that the likes of IMDB and Wiki have included?
Hey Bob….well…one movie expert….has Dinner At Eight listed as a Franchot Tone movie. But that expert (some book called Rating The Movie Stars) was wrong…and I happily followed him down that path. Dinner At Eight has been removed….and replaced with 5 more movies. So the grand total is now 54 Tone movies on the page. Thanks for the catch.
I have been sitting on these 50 Franchot Tone movies for about 6 months now….figured I would put out the movies we have researched so far. Lots of his movies have resulted in the big goose egg when it comes to box office grosses. So I am basically saying, that this is not a completed page …as we have not done any deep deep research on many of his missing movies.
