  • Sort George Kennedy movies by co-stars of his movies.
  • Sort George Kennedy movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost

  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations each George Kennedy movie received and how many Oscar® wins each George Kennedy movie won.
  • Sort George Kennedy movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. No doubt, Cool Hand Luke was George Kennedy best moment on the screen, a great performance as Paul Newman’s rival and then his sort of sidekick. Unfortunate, Kennedy was not provided with the opportunity for another dramatic performance of that caliber.

Interesting to see all the big films Kennedy appeared in as a supporting player in the 1960s. Many favorites here. But in terms of films I particularly remembered him in, apart from Cool Hand Luke, are: Charade (him and James Coburn make delightful villains), The Sons of Katie Elder, Airport, Airport 75, Earthquake (though not crazy about the movie), and in one of his rare leading roles, Guns of the Magnificent Seven.

With 20 George Kennedy films seen, I’m sure not win any prizes on this one, but enjoyed this page and the comments!

    1. Hey PhilHoF17. I agree with you 100% about Kennedy and Cool Hand Luke. His supporting role to Newman’s Luke is one of the best ever….and luckily the Academy voters saw it that way too. I wonder how Kennedy felt as the calender hit the 1980s and 1990s….and his parts started to disappear….from all those high profile movies to the countless low budget direct to home entertainment movies he made the last 30 plus years. Maybe Bruce Willis could let us know….lol. Slamming my Bruce….I might loss my fan card…lol. Thanks for the tally count, visit and the feedback on George Kennedy.

  2. George Kennedy is # 407 on the current Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. In 2000 he was # 29 and there are actors ranked higher than him back then who have since fallen off. These are the actors on the current list who appeared with him.

    1. Hey Dan….epic epic lists. The second one is especially huge. Good to see that George is still on the current list….though he seems to be sliding down the list pretty quickly. Not surprised that he was in the Top 30 back in the day. When I think about it…..it was probably one of the first supporting actors I started to recognize….from his good guy roles in the Airport movies to the bad guys in so many other movies.

As for the Oscar winning co-stars…..almost reaching 50…..I suspect in time….he will get to that plateau…especially with so many co-stars on the first list. Ernest Borgnine gets my Bess Flower Most Frequent Co-Star Award….6 times they worked together.

Michael Caine…should be able to keep Kennedy attached to the current list for awhile……I hope it is still a couple of years before Caine starts to slide down the rankings. Great feedback as always.

  3. I have seen 23 George Kennedy movies including 9 of the top 10 and 17 of the top 20.

The HIGHEST rated film I have seen is Airport.

The highest rated film I have NOT seen is The Sons of Katie Elder.

The LOWEST ranked film I have seen is The Ballad of Josie.

    Favourite George Kennedy Movies:
    Charade
    The Dirty Dozen
    Airport
    Cool Hand Luke
    Death on the Nile
    The Flight of the Phoenix
    Lonely Are the Brave
    Shenandoah
    Thunderbolt and Lightning
    Airport 77
    Mirage
    The Eiger Sanction

RE: The Naked Gun series. I used to love these films. Unfortunately, the presence of OJ Simpson in them since his shall we say legal issues has interfered with my ability to enjoy them.

    1. By the way, Mom and I are attending the play Murder on the Nile adapted from Death on the Nile this Friday by the local Players Guild.

    2. Hey Flora. Thanks for the tally, comment and visit. 23 is actually behind me and Steve….in some ways that is surprising….but most of his career took place after 1976. His last movies were pretty bad….and pretty low budgets. I have seen all of your favorites except for Mirage….somehow I have missed that movie. Cool Hand Luke and Charade are easily my favorite two George Kennedy movies as well. I understand your point about the Naked Gun loses some of it’s fun. Great feedback as always.

  4. George Kennedy has 19 Cogerson 100 million dollar crashers in the above table but to the best of my knowledge in not one of them has he the lead role [and indeed the only main part that off hand I can ever remember him performing is in Guns of the Magnificent Seven]. The 41 flicks outside the $100 million bunch in the table have a combined adjusted domestic gross of roughly $1 billion or a paltry average of just under $25 million per movie.

Moreover against the CV of 183 acting credits mentioned above George’s financial return of an alleged net worth of just $5 million is relatively meagre compared with that of many other, even supporting, stars – for example John C Reilly with a net personal fortune of $45 million built on just slightly over half of Kennedy’s output.

However George nevertheless deserves this Cogerson page as he brought a lot to the table in supporting roles and at 6ft 4″ George could seamlessly alternate between affable giant and a hulk more menacing to me at least than the likes of the 5ft 10″ Statham no matter how many time the latter takes off his shirt and shows Steve his muscles. “Size DOES matter!” Good stats table so all-in-all Vote Up!

  5. Good subject. George Kennedy was a welcome presence in movies, one of my favorite character actors of the 60s and 70s.

I’ve seen 29 of the 60 films listed, favorites include – Cool Hand Luke, The Dirty Dozen, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, The Airport series, The Naked Gun 1-3, Charade, Earthquake and The Good Guys and the Bad Guys.

Cool Hand Luke is no.1 on the critics chart, the movie that made him a star and won him an Oscar too, there’s a Christ allegory running thru that movie and Kennedy ultimately plays the part of Judas.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot was a film I watched a bunch of times at the cinema because it was usually paired up with a reissued Bruce Lee movie and I was a Bruce Lee fanboy back then. I even had a pair of wooden nunchakus which I would clobber myself with while attempting to use them. 🙂

    Top page Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve. Thanks for the George Kennedy comment. I have seen 26 of his movies. So kudos to you for your victory. That includes the Top 19 Kennedy UMR movies…and then it gets bleak…only 7 of the last 41 movies. Seems he lost his Hollywood power in the 1980s and 1990s. Because he was a “go to” supporting actor in the 1960s and 1970s.

I have seen all of your favorites except for The Good Guys and the Bad Guys. Loved him in Charade and Cool Hand Luke. I never noticed the Jesus symbols on the first few viewings of Cool Hand Luke…..now I can’t help but notice it. I like both of George’s Clint Eastwood movie….with Thunderbolt and Lightfoot getting the edge over The Eiger Sanction.

If you think about Airport (1970) …that movie provided Kennedy with not one but two franchises. First he appeared in all the Airport movies….then Naked Gun was a spoof movie….that was made possible by the success of the Zucker brothers spoofing Airport in Airplane.

I recently saw Kennedy in The Gambler….he was almost unrecognizable…..sadly the image of him being a frail old man will probably stick with me…..I would rather it be an image of him in Cool Hand Luke or Charade. Good feedback as always.
