1 STEVE Final paragraphs below may be of passing interest to you. Does the chronology mean that I was a Heston fan before you were and Bruce was out of order when he thought of you and not me on that shopping trip involving Chuck’s Julius Caesar poster?
HI FLORA
Always good seeing comments from you appear and I note that like me two of the few Geraldine Page films with which you are familiar are Sweet Bird of Youth and Dear Heart. You didn’t like the first of them but we both seem to have adored the second.
Our tastes seem to coincide often so it was a cinch that we would both enjoy a lovely heartwarming little film like Dear Heart especially as one of our mutual male idols was in it.
I had seen Geraldine in John Wayne’s 1953 Hondo but I was not very conscious of her in that one (1) because of the strong presence of the Duke in the title role and (2) 1953 was Geraldine’s debut year and having made an uncredited appearance in Taxi with Dan Daily earlier that year Hondo was her first credited screen appearance.
Around the time of Hondo The Green Glove was released starring Glenn and a Geraldine BROOKS and for a long time when Page was mentioned I would confuse her with Brooks because they had the same Christian name.
The Green Glove was one of those minor films our Glenn appeared in before his strong performance in Blackboard Jungle made him a mega star. Bruce gives Green Glove a 63% rating which is good for an unimportant film of its kind so even in “dime a dozen” movies Glenn was making an effective screen presence felt in the early fifties.
ADDITIONAL TRIVIA
Cagney made a 1932 Taxi but the 1953 Taxi mentioned above is one of those little films that probably few people will ever have heard of and even Bruce hasn’t picked it up on his Dan Dailey page However I remember it well for two reasons (1) it was meant to be John Garfield’s comeback film after being blacklisted but he died before shooting began and MOST importantly (2) I saw it on a double bill with Ruby Gentry [aka Ruby] starring Jennifer Jones and Charlton Heston and it was one of the very first movies that turned me into a fanatical Chuck fan.
Ruby Gentry was released in the States and Canada in 1952 but not in England and Northern Ireland until 1953 and Steve and I will therefore both regard 1953 as its official release date!
Hi, Bob.
Thanks for the detailed information on Geraldine Page and on the Glenn Ford film Green Glove. I have not yet been able to find Green Glove and it is on my to-be seen list.
I have seen the James Cagney Taxi movie, but not that Dan Daily movie of the same name. I had not realized it was meant to be John Garfield’s comeback. His is suck a tragic story. I watch a lot of his movies.
I looked up Geraldine Brooks and noted that she is still alive. I saw her in Possessed starring Joan Crawford. I have probably seen her on TV as well.
Correction. Geraldine Brooks died in 1977. My mistake.
HI FLORA
Interesting response. .Mmany thanks.
Hey Bob….good thoughts on Geraldine’s movies. So both you and Flora recommend Dear Heart….very interesting….makes me even more curious about checking it out. Good trivia on Glenn Ford, Taxi and Geraldine Brooks (never heard of her before). As for Heston….he can be shared….but Steve has the number chair locked up….but don’t worry…musicians who sit in the second chair make beautiful music too……lol.
HI BRUCE
Thanks for your feedback to my Geraldine Page page – that would have sounded better if I had been saying your Geraldine Brooks page!
A lot of my post was about Glenn Ford and whilst Flora and I could discuss him until the cows come home one is never sure how much interest such a discussion will hold for others who maybe want to talk about Bruce Willis, Myrna Loy or Charlton Heston.
Talking as indeed I now am about Chuck brings me naturally to my fellow- idolater of Mr Heston, Steve, and your comments about “second chair”. If you have been following any of my recent exchanges involving your latest viewers el Little Englander and Captain Cosmopolitan into which Steve dragged ME you may glean that I feel that the Irish have always had to be content with “2nd chair” to the English !!
[Is there any way that you can keep this post hidden from Steve without deleting it ? as he seems to think that with cracks like the foregoing I am racist where the Limeys are concerned. He seems to have ignored the fact that on a couple of occasions I have tried – unsuccessfully! – to wind you up about the Yanks.
Yet I have American relatives that I am hugely fond of and I can say without hyperbole that when I was in the US in 1999 most of the Americans that I met then were like most of the English whom I know – hugely enjoyable and admirable people all round. Of course any time I enthuse about you Americans whom Steve and his like once colonized I have to add the caveat that I never met JOEL when I was out there!]
Hey bob….glad you like my “second chair” comment. Sorry…..you post it….it is fair game for everybody….including Steve…lol. Good ole Joel….you will be happy to notice that on our recently written Barbara Harris (RIP) page…Joel gets mentioned in 2 of her movies as co-stars. Just trying to keep your day interesting…lol.
Hey Bruce, I saw Joel’s name pop up twice on Barbara’s chart and thought perhaps it was a mistake, maybe you have Joel constantly on your mind and added him in there without thinking, but he apparently did contribute something musically to those films?
I thought Bob would raise a rumpus if he saw Joel’s name intruding into his beloved charts and maybe stop pointing his fingers and flaring his nostrils at those ‘orrible Limey English for a while. [wink]
HI BRUCE
No surprise at all Joel getting two mentions [is that enough?] because after all the mob in the Bible instead of asking for the sparing of the life of Jesus cried “Give us Barabbas!” and the Bible goes on to say “Now Barabbas was a robber.”
Do not know very much about her. Her pictures remind of Joanne Woodward. Enjoy your weekend.
Hey Helakoski…good point about Joanne Woodward and Page looking similar. I had not noticed that before. Thanks for stopping by.
I have seen just 3 Geraldine Page movies.
Two of the films are favourites of mine: Dear Heart and The Rescuers. Dear Heart is a gem of a romantic comedy and Page and Glenn Ford have great chemistry. The Rescuers was a fun animated movie.
The fourth film I have seen is Sweet Bird of Youth. I’ve seen it a couple of times, but I don’t enjoy it, despite its cast.
That sentence SHOULD read “The THIRD film I have seen is Sweet Bird of Youth.”
If I was downstairs I would fix that error…but I am not…so we will chalk this up to a rare error. My lead in making errors is safe…..as I have a huge lead…..lol.
Hey Flora…stunned that your tally is pretty low…actually trailing Steve and myself. Did not see that one coming. I saw The Rescuers in theaters but her voice role did not register with me at all. I will have to check out Dear Heart. Sweet Bird of Youth is good but depressing…a one and done movie for me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Geraldine Page.
The reason my total is so low for Geraldine Page movies is not a reflection on her. It’s because TCM is my main source for classic films and they don’t own the rights to many of her films. I also watch a Canadian channel called Silver Screen Classics. Maybe more of her films will air on TCM in the future. Unfortunately, I do not have access to Fox Movie Channel.
I’ve seen just 4 Geraldine Page movies, they are – Hondo, The Beguiled, The Rescuers and The Bride. My favorite of the four being Hondo, a John Wayne classic originally shown in 3D.
The Beguiled is one of my least favorite Clint Eastwood films. I hated that ending. The Rescuers was a fun Disney animation, I think I enjoyed the sequel more. It’s been many years since I last saw Sting play Frankenstein.
Looking at the grosses, Hondo was a big hit for John Wayne. Hondo, along with Shane and Vera Cruz, are the westerns that influenced Sergio Leone and other Italian directors in the 60s.
Looking at my comment I barely mentioned Page, a bit unfair but I didn’t see her at her best in her Oscar nominated films.
Good work Bruce, Vote Up!
Hey Steve
1. Thanks for checking out our Geraldine Page page.
2.. Tally count….8 for me and four for you.
3. I have seen 3 of your 4….I think I might have seen The Bride…but I barely remember it….was that the one where Sting battles the worms in the desert…or the one where Sting is rock and roll rebel in black and white…lol. Anyway I did not count it.
4. Honda got her an Oscar nomination…..pretty good since it was her first movie.
5. Looking at her Oscar glory….8 nominations….I think it is safe to say she is very under appreciated.
Thanks for the feedback.
I have seen 8 of these Geraldine Page movies. She got 8 Oscar nominations….pretty impressive when you realize she made less than 30 movies. That only leaves one thespian with more than 6 Oscar nominations that does not have a UMR page. Dame Judi Dench. Talk to everybody on Monday when we get back.
