Need to know which Glenn Ford movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

One of our first requested pages (5 years and 2 website homes ago) was for Glenn Ford (1916-2006).  So why the delay?  The main reason is that we generally stay away from Columbia Pictures performers.  The reason for this reluctance, is the fact that it is almost impossible to find box office numbers for Columbia Pictures movies from 1930 to 1980.  Getting box office numbers is one of the most important factors in our rankings.  Recently we got another request for Ford.  A deeper look into Ford’s career showed that many of his movies made Variety’s Top Grossing yearly movie charts.  So Søren, Flora, William, Hinton66 and Tom….finally here is your requested page.

Glenn Ford (1916-2006) was a Canadian-born American Golden Globe® winning actor.  Ford’s acting career covered 7 decades…from the 1930s to the 1990s. His IMDb page shows 110 acting credits from 1937-1991. This page ranks Glenn Ford movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, and movies not released in North America were not included in the rankings.

    1. He had some classics…like Gilda, The Big Heat, Experiment in Terror and The Blackboard Jungle. For some reason I started to associate him with Bruce Willis while I was working on this page. One of the games I play in my mind is matching current actors with classic actors.

        1. I always seem to match Tom Hanks with everybody…lol. Hanks the new Grant…Hanks the new Cooper. Hanks the new Stewart. I do think Spencer Tracy and Morgan Freeman have matching acting skills….Denzel to Sidney…an obvious one. One day I will put all of these down on paper.

  1. Hello, Bruce!

Thanks for a long awaited Glenn Ford page. As you can tell I am a big fan of Glenn Ford. Most of the trivia I already knew although I have not read his son’s book. He actually made a movie called The Fastest Gun Alive. Excellent.

Note: in the list of 5 movies he made with Rita Hayworth you only listed 4. The one you are missing is The Affair in Trinidad, the first movie she made after her divorce from the prince.

Regarding the missing movies that you could not find information on box office: I have seen 4 of them:
    Go West Young Lady
    The Undercover Man
    Lust for Gold
    Convicted

The highest rated movie I have seen is The Big Heat at number 1.

The lowest rated movie I have seen is Terror on a Train/Time Bomb at number 57.

The highest rated movie I have not seen is Superman at number 4. I am generally not interested in superhero movies even if I do watch Batman tv and a few Batman movies. I did not know he was in Superman, actually. Similar to my interest in Gregory Peck, I want to see every movie Glenn Ford ever made at least once-so Superman goes on my list of to-see films.

    Viewing By Rankings:
    I have seen 4 of Ford’s top 5
    8 of his top 10
    12 of top 15
    17 of top 20
    20 of top 25
    24 of top 30
    28 of top 35
    32 of top 40
    35 of top 45
    39 of top 50
I have seen 40 of these movies listed overall.

With the 4 missing box office movies I have seen 44 of Mr. Ford’s career.

I love Ford in all types of genres.

My favourite 5 movies is very difficult to choose. I want to instead list my top 10 Glenn Ford movies:

    Gilda
The Teahouse of the August Moon
    3:10 To Yuma
    The Big Heat
    The Gazebo
    The Fastest Gun Alive
    Experiment in Terror
    The Money Trap
    The Rounders
    The Courtship of Eddie’s Father

There are plenty of movies I record by PVR on TCM or SSC which I keep recorded long enough to watch them and then delete. However, there are a number of them which I have recorded which I have no intention of ever deleting. A large number of them are Glenn Ford movies.

Well, I had resigned myself to the idea of a Glenn Ford page never being done. I am so happy that there were enough people who requested him that it did get done.

    Cheers, Flora

    1. Hey Flora. Before I respond to your comment…I have a question for you. Ever since I told my mom that I was working on a Glenn Ford page she has been trying to remember the name of a Ford movie she really liked. In that one Ford is overseas…and fighting with his family….Ford is the good one….but at the end Ford and his family all die when bombs are dropped on them. She thinks the movie is The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. If you have seen that movie…just it sound like the description given in this e-mail? Thanks for the help.

      1. The Four Men of the Apocalypse is indeed the movie your Mom is trying to remember. There are several generations in that family, and some of them are on opposite sides of the war. I saw it last year for the first time.

I did not know your Mom was born in Canada.

        Cheers,

        Flora

        1. Hey Flora….thanks for the confirmation….she has been trying to figure out the title of the movie for 3 days now. Including going through old video books….turns out that The Four Men of the Apocalypse was her first guess….then she convinced herself that it was the wrong movie. Yep she is a Canuck too…..born and raised in Montreal…..while on vacation to Va Beach, Va…she met my dad on the beach….about a year later they were married and she moved to Virginia.

    2. Hey Flora.
      1. Better late than never. I do not have the notes….but I am pretty sure that you originally made your Glenn Ford request back when we were on HubPages…all the way back in 2011.
      2. Thanks for the mini-mini- review on The Fastest Gun Alive
      3. I will add the 5th Rita movie to the interesting part of the page…thanks for the catch.
      4. I spent a lot of time trying to find box office information on Lust For Gold…as well as Convicted….one of the books I used listed both of those movies as some of his best performances of his career. I really wish they were in the table.
      5. Your %…80%, 80%, 80%, 85%, 80%, 80%, 80%, 80% (wow that has not happened before) and finally 77%. Very impressive.
      6. Tally count….40 for you….I am at 10. I am betting that Steve will surpass that number but not yours…I have 0 of the 10 I want to include in the page.
      7. I have seen 4 of your Top 10….with 3:10 To Yuma and The Big Heat being my favorites….I like Gilda …but I do not love that one. Of the other 6 you list…I would say Experiment In Terror is the one I want to watch the most.
      8. Sounds like you have lots of options to find Glenn Ford movies….I use all the local libraries to find my movies….there are about 10 near me I can easily track down and finally watch.
      9. Seems that I always end up watching more of a movie subject AFTER I write the page…..so I will be on the look out for more Ford movies.
      10. Sorry it took so long….whenever I looked at his movie list…I also struggled with the beginning and ending part of his career…thankfully he was so successful from 1946 to 1965…that I found almost all of his movies made during his prime.
Thanks for stopping by and talking Ford movies.

  2. Back in the 1950s I remember Glenn Ford being the biggest star going. Right up there with Gary Cooper and John Wayne. His fast trigger finger was something everybody knew back then. So many memorable movies. My favorites would be The Man From Colorado, Lust For Gold and The Big Heat.

    1. Hey Glenn Fan….Ford, Cooper, Wayne and Randolph Scott ruled the westerns from 1940 to the late 1950s. I like The Big Heat as well. The other two movies you mentioned have made it to my list of movies to watch. Thanks for checking out my Ford page.

  3. Hey, I did not know that Glenn Ford was a Canadian born in Quebec. Is that Quebec City or the Province of Quebec? How about that!!! I enjoyed his movies very much – some really good ones. I liked Love Is A Ball with Hope Lange = that was good…..I would like to see that one again. .Gilda of course one must mention – that was really good and I have seen that one many times especially on TMC. THANKS SO VERY MUCH FOR THIS SITE.

    1. Hey Bern1960…..Ford was born in Quebec City…probably only miles away from where you were born. Glad you enjoyed his movies. According to Glenn Ford A Life….Hope Lange and Glenn Ford were in love off screen as well….and that Ford’s time spent making Love Is A Ball where some of his happiest times. Gilda is probably his most famous role. Glad TMC is so helpful.

  4. Loved Glenn Ford. Easily my favorite actor and I really miss him being around. The Oscar people ought to be ashamed of themselves for not giving him a Honorery Oscar.

    1. Hey Curtisy…very cool….hopefully you found this webpage worthy of your favorite actor. I agree with you that the Oscar people should have done more to honor Mr. Ford. Thanks for stopping by.
