One of our first requested pages (5 years and 2 website homes ago) was for Glenn Ford (1916-2006).  So why the delay?  The main reason is that we generally stay away from Columbia Pictures performers.  The reason for this reluctance, is the fact that it is almost impossible to find box office numbers for Columbia Pictures movies from 1930 to 1980.  Getting box office numbers is one of the most important factors in our rankings.  Recently we got another request for Ford.  A deeper look into Ford’s career showed that many of his movies made Variety’s Top Grossing yearly movie charts.  So Søren, Flora, William, Hinton66 and Tom….finally here is your requested page.

Glenn Ford (1916-2006) was a Canadian-born American Golden Globe® winning actor.  Ford’s acting career covered 7 decades…from the 1930s to the 1990s. His IMDb page shows 110 acting credits from 1937-1991. This page ranks Glenn Ford movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, and movies not released in North America were not included in the rankings.

  1. My dad liked Glenn Ford, if there was an old film on the telly and Ford was in it he would watch it.
Glenn Ford usually played decent guys, has he ever played a nasty villain? I dunno I haven’t seen all his films. I count 17 films that I know I’ve seen but there must have been more over the years.

Good to see Superman topping the UMR chart, it’s the one I’ve watched the most. As a comic book movie fan (unlike Bruce who isn’t) Superman is a big favorite of mine. For the few who haven’t seen it Ford played Jonathan Kent, Superman’s stepfather in that epic Oscar-winning movie. 🙂

From his old Hollywood films favorites include Gilda, Blackboard Jungle, Fastest Gun Alive, Jubal, The Big Heat, Torpedo Run and 3:10 to Yuma. I also liked Midway, which was renamed Battle of Midway here in the UK. I saw that at the cinema in seat-shaking sensurround, does anyone remember sensurround?

I see Ford fan Flora has wiped me out on the film count. Nice.

Another top job Bruce, voted up!

    1. Hey Steve. Once again our dads seem to have the same taste in movies. What happened with us?….lol. In the book someone maybe John Barrymore told Ford to never shy away from playing the villain…..not sure he played a nasty villain….but his role in 3:10 To Yuma would sorta of fall into the bad guy role.
Hey I like comic book movies….just getting a little tired of them….I liked them much more when there were only 1 or 2 a year….versus a new one every 2 or 3 months. Oh wait here comes Deadpool next month. Superman is a classic…and Ford shines as the older Kent.
Of your favorites….I have seen 5 of them….with Fastest Gun Alive being one of the Ford movies that has moved up very high on my list of movies to watch.
Tally count…..Flora 40 (44 counting the missing movies)….you 17 and me 10….even combined Flora wiped the floor with us.
As always thanks for stopping by and talking Mr. Glenn Ford.

  2. Been a huge Glenn Ford fan for as many years as I can remember. For me it was Gilda. Rita was super sexy, but Glenn Ford was the engine that made that movie move. Pretty sure I have seen almost all of these movies. Even own the book by his son. A nice look at his career though I have some issues with ranking movies. Still an entertaining look at the career of Mr. Ford.

    1. Hey Gene. I like your comment. Sounds like you are a serious Glenn Ford fan. So how do my rankings look to you? The default table is ranked by critic and audience ratings…while if you sort by UMR Score the top films would be Superman, Gilda, The Blackboard Jungle, The Teahouse of the August Moon and Midway…with A Stolen Life and Don’t Get Near The Water near the Top 5. Midway seems to me to be the one that is out of place. I am now the proud owner of the Glenn Ford book too. Thanks for stopping by and sharing some of your Ford thoughts.

      1. Overall your rankings look pretty good. I like all of the movies in the top ten but I do not think Superman and Midway are really Glenn Ford movies. His part in Midway is very brief while his role in Superman is somewhat bigger but not that important in the movie. I would have The Redhead and the Cowboy and Jubal in the top ten. Once again thanks for all of your hard work.

        1. Thanks for the input Gene. I agree with you about Superman and Midway. I have not seen either Redhead and the Cowboy or Jubal….but I am sure they would be worthy additions to the Top 10. Appreciate the return visit.

  3. Hey Bruce and Flora:

Thanks for the confirmation of the Glenn Ford movie that I could not remember the name of. I would like to see that movie once again. Yes, I met Bruce’s father in Virginia Beach. We had about 21 dates in all as he lived in Portsmouth and I lived in Montreal. He visited me in November and I spent New Years here and he came up to Montreal in January where he signed the papers for me to live in the United States – stating he would support me when I moved here. I came down in March and he came back up on April with his family where we got married and I came to the States to live. Bruce’s father and I were married 51 years and 55 days. We all miss him – five years this coming June. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE INFO.

    1. Hey BERN1960…I told you Flora would be able to confirm the movie. 51 years and 55 days is impressive….especially when we live in a world that sees almost everybody get divorced. Thanks for sharing your story. Must have been 21 good dates…lol.

      1. Hey Cogerson – I am sure I told you that your father and I drove to Ottawa for the day the first time he came to Montreal while we were dating. I also took him to Mount Royal on the mountain where we all went a couple of years ago where Bruce Willis made the movie and you stood in the same place. Just think if your dad and I not met in Virginia Beach – you would not be here. GOOD THING WE MET EH! LOVE YOU! (I left a lot behind me when I married your father and came to the USA – family, friends, home, job and all I knew and knew nothing when I came here). GOOD DECISION ON MY PART. Now I have two sons, six grandchildren, and one great granddaughter and of course a talented and loving daughter-in-law – lots of love, family and laughs too. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING YOU ALL DO SHARING YOUR LIVES WITH ME………

        1. Hey Bern1960. Very cool information. Thanks for the kudos. We think you are pretty awesome too! The Bruce Willis movie was The Whole Nine Yards. I personally am glad you two found each other…as I kinda of like my life….lol. I agree with you 100% that you made the right decision.
