1. Grace Patricia Kelly (1929-1982) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
2. After some successful television appearances, Grace Kelly appeared in her first movie…. 1951’s Fourteen Hours. Although her performance in Fourteen Hours did not get much notice, she did attract the atttention of producer Stanley Kramer. Kramer hired Grace Kelly for the classic western, 1952’s High Noon which won Gary Cooper his second Oscar®.
3. After High Noon’s success, Grace Kelly became a hot commodity in Hollywood. Over the next 4 years she would appear in 9 more movies. Her third movie was 1953’s Mogambo with Clark Gable. Kelly would receive her first Oscar® nomination for Mogambo.
4. 1954 was a huge year for Grace Kelly as she made 5 of her 11 movies that year. First up was the her first of three movies with Alfred Hitchcock….Dial M For Murder. After Dial M For Murder….Hitchcock and Kelly moved to Rear Window. Rear Window is one of the best movies ever made. After Rear Window, Grace Kelly filmed The Country Girl starring Bing Crosby and William Holden. Kelly would win the Oscar® for Best Actress for her Country Girl role. Her fourth movie was the forgotten Green Fire, but her fifth movie of 1954 would reunite her with William Holden in the blockbuster The Bridges at Toko-Ri.
5. In 1955 she would only make one movie, but it was the classic film, To Catch A Thief. To Catch A Thief was her third movie with Alfred Hitchcock as the director but her first and only time she co-starred with Cary Grant. To Catch A Thief is my favorite Grace Kelly movie, although Rear Window is pretty close as well.
6. In 1956 she would make her last two movies…The Swan.…and her final movie High Society which co-starred Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra….and then her movie career was over….so what happened?
7. What happened was Prince Rainier III of Morocco. After a secret courtship that started at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly fell in love and became engaged. On April 4, 1956 they got married and thus Grace Kelly’s movie career came to an immediate halt. Princess Grace had three children with Prince Rainier….those child were Princess Caroline, Prince Albert and Princess Stephanie.
8. In 1981 Prince Rainier and Princess Grace celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. In 1982 Princess Grace while driving a car, had a stroke and crashed the car. The combination of the car crash and the stroke proved to be too much to overcome. She passed away at the age 52, one day before she would have turned 53.

Hi Bob, I have a question: Why do these high UMR score movies not appear on the top 100 movies? Just curious. You list High Noon here as 99.3 (grace kelly movies ranked) while The Godfather 96.2 on the top 100 page. Why would this be?

1 Well the die was certainly cast for you here – it had to be a Top 11 ! Actually I’m glad you included 14 Hours an often overlooked B movie gem that was the only Grace Kelly film pre-stardom and in it she had just a small supporting role. [Bruce’s audience/critic rating also reflects a keen appreciation of that film.]
2 In most of the 10 films that she made from High Noon onward Grace had Hitchcock and/or one or two of the greatest stars of the day to help her carry the films, and her final movie The Swan was the only one in which she was billed first and according to Wikipedia it lost money.
3 Given all that and the brevity of her career it is impossible to know if she would have survived as a major box office star if she had tried to carry more films on her own. Indeed coincidentally 2 nights ago I watched a TV documentary on her and it was suggested in the commentary that one of the reasons that she deserted Hollywood for Royalty was that she too
had doubts about her potential career longevity.
4 However the overall quality of her 10 starring-roles movies is highly impressive and if my notes and maths are correct you have given the 10 a 75% average rating and Bruce has a 75.2 audience/critic average for the 10 with Green Fire being the weakest link for you both.
5 Bruce’s box office average is almost $207 mil for all 11 of her films and his average for the
main 10 is a staggering $224 mil. so I wonder if there has ever been another star performer who has had such a succession of major successes in so short a space of time ?
6 Also you have ranked her No 6 in your 25 Actresses video and the Oracle himself has made her No 8 in his 25 female 1950-2010 list, so who am I to question her potential stardom? Anyway despite the low number of entries a worthwhile video on a historically great star.

What was the subject again… ah yes Grace Kelly, lovely girl. Didn’t take long to produce that video and I knew Rear Window had to be number one.
To Catch a Thief was in 7th place out of 11 films, a bit low for the master of suspense but even Hitch regarded that one as a bit of fluff, he was taking a holiday. It didn’t even make the top 20 on my Cary Grant video. Bruce was much kinder, giving it the number 3 spot on the critics chart, ahead of Dial M for Murder and The Country Girl.
You and Flora rate her very highly but I don’t think she had the acting chops to have had a long lasting career, she was prettier than Audrey Hepburn but Hepburn was the better actress. Still, a tragedy her life was cut short, maybe if she hadn’t married into royalty…

Lovely girl, not a great actress but she brightened up the films she appeared in. If she hadn’t fallen for her fairy tale prince she might still be alive today. Hitchcock was besotted with her and I can’t blame him.
I’ve seen 8 of the 11 films listed. The 3 I haven’t seen are The Swan, Fourteen Hours and The Country Girl.
My favorite film of hers – Rear Window. One of the few films I’ve watched twice in one evening. Good to see it topping the critics chart.
I will seek out Country Girl I’m curious to see why she won Best Actress instead of hot favorite Judy Garland that year.

1 Interesting that you mention that Grace was not a great actress.
2 That point was put to a film historian who was the asked how she became a big star. The historian replied that she craved stardom so “she got her act together” and went after it.
Being a stunning looking person….had to help the cause……the camera loved her….as did millions of film fans. I would say she was a great star that for a brief time made movies.
