This page will rank 25 Greer Garson movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Her television appearances and short films were not included in the rankings.

Drivel part of the page:  This Greer Garson page was requested by Chris and Flora.  Thanks to the MGM Ledgers we were able to not only secure all of Garson’s domestic box office totals….but also most of her worldwide box office totals.  As we were researching this page, the start of Garson’s career reminded us of the start of current star, Jennifer Lawrence.  Both started their careers off with lots of box office hits and lots of Oscar® nomination.  It will interesting to see if Lawrence’s career follows the same path that Garson’s career took.

  1. LAURENT:

1 My favourite actors of the French cinema have long been Montand, Simone Signoret and the highly intelligent Louis Jourdan though I realise that the first two were born in Italy and Germany respectively and that Louis became to a large extent ‘Hollywoodised’

2 Unfortunately we don’t get many French films in Northern Ireland but I’ve seen the classics such as Wages of Fear and Rififi and was very impressed by them.

3 The tastes of the French did though take a knock in my esteem when I read that a French cinema had retained for something like 3 years that awful Jerry Lewis film Don’t Raise the Bridge Lower the River.

4 However you have somewhat restored my faith by telling me of the popularity of Lancaster, Peck and Cooper in France as I greatly admire all 3.

5 Hopefully I am returning the favour when I tell you that I’ve seen a poll of the 10 greatest actors of the 20th Century as selected by a pool of leading movie directors and Jean Gabin was ranked 7th and was in fact the only Continental European on the list.

6 I trust you are enjoying your weekend.

    1. Hello Bob,
1.Yves Montand was a gret actor, and Simone Signoret won an oscar ! I like Louis Jourdan. He was a star in USA more than in France altough he was popular. One of the greatest french actor of all-time, was Louis Jouvet, star of the 30’s and the 40’s. One of his most famous film is Quai des Orfèvres.
2.Wages of fear and Rififi are very good movies. The second was directed by an american, Jules Dassin. His son, Joe Dassin, was one of the most popular french singer of the 60′ and the 70’s. Wages of fear, was directed by Henri-George Clouzot, who directed Quai des Orfèvres.
3.Tastes and color, like we say in France. Sometimes bad movies are big success in France, and good movies not. But it’s same thing everywhere, I think. For exemple, americans didn’t like Once upon a time in west at the time. In France this movie knew a very huge succes and was immediatly considered a masterpiece.
4.They’re my favorite classic american actors with John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and James Stewart.
      5. I didn’t know for Jean Gabin. It’s a great honor for the french cinema. He’s my favorite french actor of all-time. I think, he was great. He had a game very modern for the time, and a charisma “animal”. I suppose you know La Grande Illusion, but if you can see La Bandera, Le Jour Se Lève or Quai des Brumes, you’ll see what I mean.
      6. I enjoy my week-end. Hope you too.

      1. LAURENT

1 Thanks for the addition information.

2 I thought that Jean Gabin and Spencer Tracy looked a bit like each other when they were old.

3 I once heard Simone Signoret talk about her husband Yves and she said he was the greatest person she ever met. They obviously loved each other very much and had long-lasting marriage.

  2. Hello Bruce,
I’ve seen only 2 movies of the list. But only 6 of her movies are available in DVD, in France. In fact Greer Garson was never a star in my country, and today she’s forgotten by french people. Mrs Miniver was a big succcess, and she knew two others. But people, at the time, went to see GoodBye Mr Chips for Robert Donat, and Valley of Decision for Gregory Peck (One of the biggest american star in France of all-time, with Gary Cooper, Burt Lancaster and Tom Cruise).

    1. Hey Laurent…thanks for the information on Garson in France …wow only 6 of her movies….that seems pretty low…..thanks as well for sharing the top American stars in France…So Peck and Cruise are two of the most popular…..very interesting. The results of our tally contest.

  3. 1 Great to see this almost forgotten superstar being remembered by you Bruce.

2 However the Desire Me gross is only nearly half that shown on Big Bob’s page?

    1. Hey Bob….when doing this page…..I found better box office numbers (MGM ledgers…thank you) on 4 movies..2 movies went up Valley of Decision and Judy Misbehaves…while two went down…That Forsythe Woman and as you noticed Desire Me. I had it in my notes to fix all four movies….but after fixing Valley of Decision I got sidetracked….I even made mentioned of the differences at the bottom of the page…..but this morning as we were getting ready I realized I forgot the other 3….so I quickly deleted the mention and hoped nobody would notice….but I see you quickly found the Mitchum difference. Based on the MGM ledger I feel this new number is a lot more accurate….once again a biographer….did some overestimates on the movie. I will fix all three when I return. Good catch….but why did you not notice the other three……lol.

  4. I have seen 10 of these movies. I have seen Random Harvest many many times. Thanks for the new page.

    1. 1 I haven’t got round to a detailed study of Greer’s figures yet because she’s a completely new page and with worldwide grosses there’s a lot to digest -wonderful stuff. Desire Me jumped out at me because I had always considered it might be too high and was on the look out for any further revisions..

2 Now that it’s sunk with me in that you – wisely – constantly revise figures I’ll give you more time in future to make the necessary changes to ALL associated pages before I pester you !

3 I have a few more brief comments on Greer but they’ll keep until u get back – you’re on holiday and should be able to forget pests like men !

      Have as great time!

PS: Our exchanges about The young Lions recalled for me the pungent tagline on the 1958 poster:

ALL THE DAYS AND NIGHTS OF THE YOUNG LIONS THE WARS THEY FOUGHT AND THE WOMEN THEY LOVED

      1. Hey Bob….pointing out errors with box office numbers, spelling or any other errors is always greatly appreciated. I think in future pages I am going to list the grosses that changed….some of these pages were first written and researched in 2011….my resources are considerable better now. Myrna Loy’s update will be way way different due to changes and lots of worldwide grosses.

Thanks for the Young Lions slogan. Vacation is going great….except our hotel room sprang a serious leak when we at dinner….when we came back our room was flooded…all electronic devices were fine…..suitcases soaked on bottom but clothes dry…all our food destroyed…..and the worst news my movie gross notebook got soaked….with my Warner Brothers ledgers numbers taking the worst punishment…a few years might be gone forever. I did not see that coming.

        1. Thank goodness….only two pages gone forever…and one page was one I never used…..think I saved most of the numbers though…tomorrow we have to tell the hotel the monetary amount of what was lost….what price tag do I put on a movie gross notebook?

    2. Hey Bern1960. Thanks for checking out our latest page. Your 10 movies will not get you a medal this time around. Glad you enjoyed Random Harvest so much.
