Hi Bruce,
Guillermo del Torro is a good addition to the list of directors included on this site as I suspect he will continue to make unusual and creative films for some time. It’s interesting to see that until The Shape of Water, none of his films earned any Academy Award nominations. While I thought The Shape of Water was excellent, I found Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone even better and worthy of more recognition. I have heard of Cronos and hope to see it one day, though based on your description, I think I’ll wait until I’m in the mood 🙂
Hey PhilHoF17. This morning….as I was getting ready for work….I was thinking…who can I do a page on real quick…..and as I was thinking that….up popped an interview with del Toro….which is why he now has a page.
I just got through adding in the trailers for his movies….so you can see the Cronos trailer now. As I was doing that….I realized I short changed Pan’s Labyrinth of it’s 6 Oscar nominations and 3 Oscar wins…..so it is now ranked 2nd…..which I think is fair.
I like Pan’s Labyrinth…..but have no desire to see it again. I have not seen The Devil’s Backbone….but it is on my list to watch. More Cronos trivia…..Ron Perlman pops up in that movie….the future Hellboy partners must have hit it off well while filming that movie.
As always….thanks for the feedback…and for sharing your thoughts on Mr. del Toro.
I was going to put this memory in the drivel part of the page….but…..spare time has become a very limited resource these days. So here my goes my memory on my viewing of Cronos in the mid 1990s.
I do not get depressed too much….but when I saw Cronos…it was one of the most depressing days of my life. (1) I was going through a divorce (2) I was living in a small town (Farmville, Va)…and living in a one bedroom apartment in the middle of nowhere and (3) I was hours away from my kids. The night I watched Cronos…..this stuff happened: (1) got in a huge disagreement with my boss….and at one point I actually quit my job….till calmer heads prevailed. (2) My soon to be ex-wife called me up and said she and the kids were moving to Hawaii…(that luckily did not happen) (3) I learned my work scheduled made it impossible to see my kids anytime soon (4) A scheduled date was canceled (5) When I got home the landlord said they had not gotten my check for the rent.
So at the end of the day…I watched Cronos….which is a good movie….but depressing as hell. It deals with a granddad that unknowingly found a way to live forever….bad news he figured it out when he was in the morgue. When it went off….I remember staring at television…and wondering…”What the hell am I doing with my life”. So everytime I see Cronos mentioned….I think about that day.
FYI…..it took years to realize that Cronos was directed by del Toro….I never connected those dots.
I enjoyed The Shape of Water and I’m happy to see it win Best Picture at the Oscars.
Pan’s Labyrinth was a better movie, arguably Del Toro’s best, but it’s handicapped by a really depressing ending, depending on how you interpret the last few minutes.
I’ve seen 8 of the 10 films on the chart, the two I’ve missed are The Devil’s Backbone and Cronos. I’m a big fan of the two Hellboy films.
Nice work Bruce. Vote Up.
Hey Steve…..always…thanks for the feedback. I figured you would like this movie….especially since almost all of his movies deal with science fiction and monsters. I agree with you about Pan’s Labyrinth……the villain in that one is one of the most vicious and evil bad guys of all-time. A good movie…but hard to watch. Tally count….Steve 8….me 7….and Helakoski 6. I really enjoyed the first Hellboy….missed John Hurt not being in the second one. Good stuff as always.
He along with Tim Burton create the most visually impressive movies. Loved The Shape of Water. As well as Pacific Rim and the Hellboy movies. Overall I have seen 6 of these movies.
Hey Helakoski….always good to hear from you. I agree with you about Burton and del Toro making visually impressive movies. I have not seen The Shape of Water…..but I will soon. Thanks for providing a tally. Let’s see…Steve is at 8….you are at 6……let’s see about me. I am at 7. I have not seen Shape of Water, Mimic or Devil’s Backbone. Good feedback as always.
One of the greatest creative minds working today. Glad he got a Academy win. Sci-if fans around the world rejoice.
Hey Thomas P. I agree with you. His movies are amazing to watch. His imagination is off the charts. I wonder if Spielberg is thinking….”What a minute….I had to make ultra serious movies to get my Oscar.” Thanks for the visit and the comment.
