Possibly Interesting Facts About Harrison Ford.

1. Harrison Ford was born on July 13th 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. He arrived in Hollywood in 1964 and signed a contract with Columbia Pictures that paid him $150 a week.

2. Harrison Ford first 12 years of making movies were filled with many uncredited parts and small quickly forgotten speaking parts. The highlight during this time frame would be his small roles in 1973’s American Graffiti and 1974’s The Conversation…both were nominated for Oscars® for Best Picture but neither movie really helped his career.

3. By 1976, Ford turned towards his carpentry skills to support his family. He was hired by George Lucas to build some cabinets for the Lucas house. Ford was building the cabinets at the same time Lucas was trying to cast actors for his latest movie. One thing lead to another and Ford found himself with a starring role in a little film called Star Wars.

4. Harrison Ford has been married three times in his life. He has two sons from his first marriage to Mary Marquard, he has a son and a daughter from his second marriage to Melissa Matheson and is currently married to actress Calista Flockhart.

5. His second wife, Melissa Matheson wrote the screenplay for E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. Ford actually played the part of Elliott’s teacher but the part was cut at the last minute. Now that is a deleted scene that I really want to see.

6. Harrison Ford has only been nominated for one Oscar® ….Best Actor for Witness. He does have 4 Golden Globe® nominations…those were for Witness, The Mosquito Coast, The Fugitive and Sabrina.

7. In 2000, Harrison Ford proved he could be a hero in real life as well as on the screen. Ford piloted his helicopter to rescue a dehydrated hiker on Table Mountain near his house in Wyoming.

8. Roles Harrison Ford turned down or was seriously considered for: Dragonheart, The Hunt for Red October, Vanilla Sky, Jurassic Park, Syriana, JFK, The Untouchables, Dick Tracy, Proof of Life, Schlinder’s List, The Perfect Storm, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Alien.

9. Harrison Ford says his favorite movie that he performed in is….. The Mosquito Coast….and the most frustrating film he acted in was …..Blade Runner. Ford says Deckard was human….Ridley Scott the director says Deckard was a replicant….put me on the side that Deckard was human

      1. character…and then he gave us Indiana Jones….not sure if anybody has ever given us two iconic characters like that…usually one is almost impossible for an actor…much less two.

Currently I guess Robert Downey Jr. has the best combo roles going on…with Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes….but give my Han and Indy in that fight…..thanks for the votes and the share.

  1. To be quite honest, I am not surprised that the original Star Wars trilogy ranks out as the top 3 most grossed movies with Harrison Ford acting in them. I highly enjoyed this page 🙂 Keep them coming!

  2. I know you don’t include bit parts in the rankings, but I love Ford’s screen debut in the James Coburn movie Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round-more of a fun film than a great movie. He is the man who pages Coburn’s character.

Here are my favourite movies of Ford.(Never mind best, I’ve seen apocolypse Now, for example, and it is excellent but it is too much for me.)

My five favourites in alphabetical order:

    American Grafitti

    Clear and Present Danger

    The Conversation

    Regarding Henry

    Witness

Not surprising the genres from which these favourites came. With one exception, only one of my favourites is in the top five. This reflects my preference of genres, certainly. However, get to the top 10, and it still only involves three. I am surprised that The Coversation only just missed the top 20 as Ford has made some big hits and this film is a niche title rather than a blockbuster.

    1. Hey Flora….I have never seen Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round, but I have enjoyed many James Coburn movies from the 1960s….so it should be one I will like.

Nice list of movies in your Top 5…..I love The Conversation….and I like to think that Gene Hackman’s character in Enemy of the State….is Harry Caul many years later. Witness is a classic that does not seem to get noticed enough as time marches on. I really believe it is time to give Harrison an Honorary Oscar….he has meant so much to the world of movies….but no, this year they are giving an Honorary Oscar to Oprah.

Thanks for commenting….your comment reminded me that I had not updated the page when his latest movie, Cowboys & Aliens, opened last weekend…..comes in at #27…..I see it finishing around #19 when it’s box office run ends.

      1. They are gave one to James Earl Jones as well. I’m happy about that. I don’t know what took them so long to get to Eli wallach. Seems to be a quick before he dies attitude about several choices, yet in his nineties Eli could have died long ago. Widmark was offerd lifetime awardss all the time but he refused the ones that required him to make a speech. When he retired he retired. He would appear on Biography episodes because people came to him. He didn’t hhave to go anywhere.

        1. James Earl Jones is 80, so he has 11 years on Ford. I like James Earl Jones but he has been a supporting actor for almost his entire career…..maybe when Ford turns 80 and he has just finished shooting the 6th and final Indiana Jones he will get that phone call from Oscar people.

As for Widmark, after a 60+ plus year career in show business, I think he earned the right to be picky about what he did after retiring. Thanks as always for the comments.

  3. A nice interesting page – particularly to see how Ford’s films rate on your scoring system. He is one of the most watchable movie stars in history, and is a major contributory factor in all the blockbuster successes he’s had. My favourites would include all the Indiana Jones movies, most of the Star Wars fims, The Fugitive and Regarding Henry. But best of all for me is Witness. (Have voted up)

    1. Thanks for the compliment Greensleevespages….I agree 100% he is a very watchable star….since I wrote this page…I have seen Morning Glory….it is the best Ford movie in a long time….Witness is getting better every year….thanks for stopping by.

  4. Now we are talking, I agree he needs an Oscar, I do not think he will win one, so they will have to give him for an awesome career. My favorite Ford movie is Presumed Innocent and Blade Runner.
