Need to know which Henry Fonda movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.
Whew!….After almost two months I have finally finished my Henry Fonda movie page. Before getting to his massive 83 movie table…let’s look at some possibly interesting facts about his life.
1. Henry Fonda (1905-1982) was born in Grand Island, Nebraska. One of his first acting jobs was with the Omaha Community Playhouse. One of his fellow actors was Dodie Brando, the mother of screen legend Marlon Brando. He attended the University of Minnesota, but dropped out, and headed to Cape Cod and New York seeking stage work.
2. After eight years of stage acting, Fonda appeared in his first movie, 1936’s The Farmer Takes A Wife. He did not have to wait long for a box office hit. As Trail of the Lonesome Pine (his 4th movie) was the 4th biggest hit of 1936. Fonda would appear in 114 movie and television projects over the next 46 years.
3. During his days as a struggling actor, his roommate was another struggling actor, James Stewart. After Fonda had moved to Hollywood, he encouraged Stewart to take a screen test. The result of the screen test earned Stewart his first movie contract and a move to Hollywood. They would remain lifelong friends and appear in 4 movies together over the years.
4. After starring in 40 movies from 1935 to 1948, Fonda left Hollywood for seven years to return to the stage. His greatest success on stage is the movie that brought him back to making movies in 1955. That movie was the classic film…..Mister Roberts.
5. Henry Fonda was married 5 times in his life. He had three children;….daughter Jane Fonda (two time Oscar® winning actress), son Peter Fonda (Oscar® nominated actor) and daughter Amy. His granddaughter, Bridget Fonda, is also an actress. The three generations of Fonda actors have 301 acting credits on IMDB.
His IMDb page shows 115 acting credits from 1935-1981. This page will rank 83 Henry Fonda movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in theaters were not included in the rankings.

5 More Possibly Interesting Facts About Henry Fonda.
1. Surprisingly Henry Fonda was only nominated two times for an acting Oscar®. He received his first nomination for The Grapes of Wrath in 1940 then had to wait 41 years for his second nomination for On Golden Pond. The wait was worth it as he took home the Oscar® for On Golden Pond. Fonda did receive an Honorary Oscar® in 1981 and a producer’s nomination for 1957’s 12 Angry Men.

1 HI STEVE According to film historians and indeed Henry Fonda himself he was taught acting at a school run by Mother Mumbles. A slight Dan-like link here is that Hank and Mumbles Junior both appear in the AFI’s all-time greatest male Legends list in positions 6 and 4 respectively and in fact are ranked higher than many other Greats who had more box office success.
2 Also Hank again like Mr M is one of those actors to straddle both the classic and modern eras of the cinema with Fonda appearing in the massive hit On Golden Pond as late as 1981. Henry thus outlasted and outlived many of his great contemporaries who were gone by the start of the 1960s such as Gable, Cooper, Bogie and Ty Power.
3 In my opinion Fonda’s video is of even 98% rated quality to your other extended profiles so here is my random selection of some dozen or so posters from a much wider provision of similarly excellent ones – Chad Hanna with Linda Darnell showing off her legs, two of Hank with my Jimmy [Firecreek and Cheyenne Social Club] two showcasing my Richard, [Madigan and Warlock] Battle of the Bulge, Return of Frank James, Boston Strangler, Drums along the Mohawk, How the West was Won, The Ox Bow Incident, Once upon a Time in the West, and Trail of the Lonesome Pine.
4 Many stills also to admire with my own pick being Fonda with my Joan, Jesse James, Hank with Sylvia Sidney and Bette Davis separately, with The Duke in Fort Apache, the porch scene from My Darling Clementine, and with Anthony Perkins in The Tin Star, one of my very favourite Fonda films.
5 You and the Big Boy agree on 4 of Hank’s best reviewed flicks with Bruce going for The Lady Eve instead of your choice of My Darling Clementine. Just to put him in his place for confusing us by repositioning some of the site facilities I’m going to back you!
Hi Bob, thanks for reviewing and rating my revised Henry Fonda video, appreciate the info and comment. Glad you liked the posters and stills.
I’m sure some western purists would wince at Once Upon a Time in the West rated higher than a John Ford masterpiece like My Darling Clementine, but Sergio Leone’s epic western has over time become highly revered by movie buffs, ditto The Good the Bad and the Ugly.
Even one of Leone’s lesser westerns like My Name is Nobody (which he produced and I suspect ‘ghost-directed’ parts of) has gained in stature since it’s release.
Looking at my notes 11 of Fonda’s films have scored 10 out of 10, that’s more top scores than any of the other greats I’ve recently upgraded. The top scorers are –
You Only Live Once
Tin Star ,The
Ox-Bow Incident ,The
Fort Apache
Longest Day ,The
Lady Eve ,The
Mister Roberts
Once Upon a Time in the West
My Darling Clementine
Grapes of Wrath ,The
12 Angry Men
Nine more have score 9 out of 10 including Fail Safe, Jezebel and Young Mr. Lincoln.
Which means 20 of the 50 films on the video have scored 9 and above, which is very impressive.
Highest rated at IMDB is 12 Angry Men, which tops my chart and Bruce’s too.
Two highest rated at Rotten Tomatoes are The Grapes of Wrath and OUATITW.
HI STEVE
1 Good feedback and I particularly agree with your comments on Once upon a Time in the West. Also It was a nice change to see Hank play The Bad Guy and of course that movie was a harbinger of Charlie’s up and coming top star era.
2 Anyway The Work Horse too rates Once Upon a Time above Clem and having backed your choice of the latter film against his The Lady Eve for Top 5 inclusion, I wouldn’t have the nerve to take him on twice in the one day !.
3 Also of course in spite of you two disagreeing about the 5th choice for Top 5 he still goes ahead and plugs your video. Was there ever a kinder friend or nobler foe?
I don’t bellieve I have shared this list before. On letterboxd I have completed a favourite actors list of top films and I have shared some already.
Howevr, I do not think I shared my top 15 Henry Fonda movies. Here it is:

Thanks for the link….that is a good list of Henry Fonda movies.
Thanks Dan for explaining the Oracle of the Bacon to me.
There are indeed more people who can be more closely linked.
I remember there being a Seven Degrees of Paul Newman on TCM games forum and most people could be done in four or less.
🙂
Henry Fonda has 29 films on your list that made 100 million. He is no longer on the Oracle of Bacon top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list but he was #56 back in 2000. These are the people on the current list who have worked with him. The Oracle lists I believe as complete as they can get unless someone adds more Arthur Tovey credits. We’ll do Henry in a few parts because he has a big list of people that have fallen off and I’ll bet he worked with a lot of Oscar winners.

Miyoshi Umeki who starred with Brando in Sayonara I remembered, she is not in my database.
I agree I imagine Fonda worked with many many Oscar winners. From 56th to not on the list….that was a quick drop off. Looking at his list…there are numerous people still working….but not enough to get him back on the Top 1000. Talk about a bad double feature…The Swarm and Meteor….though I admit…I have been trying to track down Meteor again…as it has been ages since I saw….I actually saw The Swarm again in the last three or four months. Yet another great list.
This is a list of all the people on the 2000 Top 1000 Oracle of Bacon Center of the Hollywood Universe list who have fallen off but worked with Hank. It’s quite long.

Just so this is clear. I am not familiar with the term Oracle of Bacon. I am aware of The Six Degrees of Separation of Kevin Bacon. I had to look up the term. But with the term usually you go by the name of the person first and then go backwards to the person in question so that you can play yourself.
Of course, when you are playing yourself it does not matter about being in the top 1,000.
But I thought that I would share the fact that I was not aware of this list because I do not think that I am the only one.
It shows you people you may never have heard of who appeared in a lot of films with people who work with everybody or they claim they’ve worked with everybody. Supposedly you can connect anybody in 3 steps but the point of the game was to get people the furthest away, say in 8 steps. The site ran programs proving Kevin Bacon was not the easiest to connect and updates it regularly. Everyone is affected by someone . Michael Caine may rank high because he has a 60 year career and he works with many actors who will accumulate more credits. But the people in the earlier stages of his career whose own careers may have stopped 40 years begin to affect his because they no longer work.
Hey Dan….very long indeed….but filled with so many great movies and great performers. Surprised to see that Arthur T. is not all over the list. Did Fonda have a contract that said….no Arthurs in my movies…lol.
I think 60 Oscar winners for Hank.

Thanks for this list Dan. Fonda did work with great actors. Add Oscar nominations or Golden Globe winners and Fonda worked with even more.
Hey Dan….so Hank bumps Heston from the third spot….Caine, Hackman and Fonda tied for second. Good stuff as usual.
Bruce:
My local paper has just come out with the 2016 entries to the Art Council’s film festival that is to take place on Wednesdays starting the last Wednesday of September in partnership with the Toronto International Film Festival.
Hopefully I will be able to attend more than one of those Wednesdays.
Hey Flora…sounds good. Hope you enjoy.
