Hmmmm….Henry Hathaway….well first of all…I have finally put Mr. Hathaway on the UMR Site Index…somehow I forgot to do that. Secondly….just added Steve’s You Tube video to this page. My thoughts on the video….that are found on Steve’s page are listed here.
I have 15 of the movies listed here. Favorites would include #2 How The West Was Won….what a cast…and looks amazing on Blu-Ray. #7 The Sons of Katie Elder….fun movie….I like #1 True Grit…but seem to not re-watch that one as much as I re-watch Katie E. #5 Niagra….MM is really good in this one….I think it might be her best performance…though many would throw Some Like It Hot back at me. #29 The Black Rose….a fun movie to watch…Welles is a blast to watch in this one. Great posters…great video. Keep up the great work.
Hello Bruce,
One of the great giant of directors in Hollywood, a great box office if I read well the box office of his page. I saw something like ten films.
In 1936 he started to made a picture with Marlene Dietrich and Charles Boyer produced by Ernst Lubitsch and Paramount…and for Dietrich it was between Desire and the Garden of Allah…
The name of the film « I loved a soldier »
Something happened to Lubitsch and it was a little difficult between Hathaway and Marlene so Dietrich walk away from the film…
The film was never completed and cost a lot of money for Paramount.
At the end, I think it was in 1939 a film call « Hotel Imperial « Opened in USA with Isa Miranda based on the same play, by Melchior Lengyell.
And I read somewhere that some shots very far with Dietrich were used in this film.
I never saw it so I can t say ….yes….
A very good week end for all of you
Pierre
Hey Pierre….thanks for the comment on Henry Hathaway….this page is getting some attention. I blame Steve and his video for that. Ten is a pretty good tally count. As always…good information on Marlene Dietrich. I have read about I Loved A Soldier……too bad it never got finished…especially since it was in Dietrich’s peak movie making period. Glad you had a good week…hope next week is even better. Good stuff.
Hey Bruce,
Henry Hathaway was a great director. I really like the 20 movies I’ve seen. My favorites are Garden Of Evil, Circus World, Lives of Bengal Lancer and Kiss of Death.
In France, Garden and Circus were his two biggest success after How the West Was Won.
During long time, Hathaway was consider by french critics as a minor director than Howard Hawks or John ford. But since 10-15 years, He is now rehabilitating by new generations of critics, as the great director he was.
Hey Laurent….good to hear from you. Thanks for checking out our Henry Hathaway page. 20 of his movies seen is the most so far…..good job topping our tally contest. Good to know the French gave Hathaway some much deserved honor. Sadly, here in the United States he is almost a forgotten director. Good comment.
P.S. We wrote a book….and we are sending UMR Hall of Famers a free version of book….if you send your address to cogersonmoviescore@gmail.com we will get one sent to you.
Very cool ! I’ve done it. Thanks !
