Horror Movies

Want to know the best Horror Movies?  How about the worst Horror Movies?  Curious about Horror Movies box office grosses or which Horror Movies movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Horror Movies movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information…and a lot more.

This page looks at the best Horror Movies….statistically speaking.  What does that mean?  We looked at box office grosses, reviews from critics & audiences and award recognition and put them in our witches cauldron.  We mixed all the stats together and came up with a score for all the Horror Movies in our database.  Our top ranked Horror Movie….was a box office hit, was loved by critics and audiences and even managed to win the Best Picture Oscar®.  The following table shows all the stats involved that helped us reach our rankings.  Obviously they are way more Horror Movies out there.  Is your favorite Horror Movie missing?….just commented at the bottom and we will research and see if and add in the movie.

Drivel Part:  Years ago we got a request from Steve Lensman to do a Horror Movie UMR page.  The last four or five Octobers we have thought we should do that Horror Movie page and every year before we knew it…Halloween would be over!  Well today, WoC (Wife of Cogerson) was working on the database and pulling in information on 1000s of movies.  When I saw that she was pulling in information on Thrillers….I casually mentioned…..”You should do that with Horror Movies…Steve has been asking for that page for years”.  Well….three hours later….WoC had an UMR page with almost 400 Horror movies.  So for the first time ever…..UMR has a page that was not completed by Cogerson….nope this baby belongs to WoC.  So let me be the first to say it….GREAT JOB WoC!

Horror Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Horror Movies by the stars of the movies
  • Sort Horror Movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses based on actual ticket sells (in millions)
  • Sort Horror Movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort Horror Movies by how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Horror Movie received.
  • Sort Horror Movies movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

*** During our update we lost our easy to find search box.  Well WoC did some work and found a new way to search through this massive table.  In the second row….first column…you will see “Movie (Year)”.  You can type in a search word here and it will search the table.

  1. Hi. Thanks for putting this list together.

Can you please include the actual money they made in US dollars too? As in, their grosses, if available. Also, does a secondary feature make any money? In the fifties for example, if you seen a movie released as ‘The Curse of Frankenstein’, then ‘X the Unknown’ was the wide release ‘B’ picture that accompanied it. Usually though, a lot of the typical supporting films were just extra flicks and made no money. But some were a package deal, if you know what I mean.

I know you do this for the individual years, but it’s easier to read up on them if they are all on the same page. 😎

  2. This update is definitely “Voted Up” as this is the most comprehensive run-down of horror movies that I have ever seen and few if any of the other ‘lesser’ ones come with adjusted grosses included. Most certainly this page will always get a welcome from me around Halloween.

Also the Christmas TV movies have just started showing daily over here in Belfast and whilst few if any of them will ever win prestigious awards, generally speak they are harmless relaxing fun in the run-up to the festive season for viewers who want to feel good [don’t go there Steve: they’re not for you!]and are not for those who don’t wish to have nightmares on Xmas Eve about zombies, slashers and guys who think they are their own mother.

The TV movies industry has of course its own hierarchy of small screen regular stars. such as Alicia Witt who was the lead in the 1998 big screen horror yarn Urban Legend [which also stars Robert Unglund – ie Freddy Krueger].

Bonnie Bedelia [Mrs John McClane from Die Hard] plays a supporting role in another [2017] film full of Christmas spirit. No bad language in those TV Christmas movies of course, so it is nice to see Bonnie in a role where she isn’t subjected to a barrage of effing and blinding from her screen husband!

    1. Hey Bob…..hope your weekend went well…ours was very very busy. I appreciate the Vote Up on this massive horror movie page….which was written and put together by WoC. Christmas movies already popping up on television in your neck of the woods….interesting. I have fond memories of watching Shawn of the Dead with my two older boys on Christmas day….I had never seen the movie….but they had….and they made me watch it right after opening Xmas presents in the morning. Back then our Christmas mornings were filled with opening one new DVD after another…lol. Funny comment about Bonnie and her Christmas screen husband….but she will always be known as Holly here in the Cogerson household. Good stuff as always.

      1. HI BRUCE: The other Mrs Charles can be justly delighted with this highly comprehensive and informative page; please pass on to her my compliments. When you two work as a team the only thing missing is a little dog!

From the end of Sept each year two TV channels over here start showing wall-to-wall made-for TV Christmas movies right through to New Year’s Day. Actually I was watching one last night which made me think of you and Steve. Trevor Donovan is a regular lead in the TV movies and although to a snob like Hirsch he would probably be an eternal 1 star guy, he is quite a pleasant and competent actor who looks a bit like the young Redford.

In the movie concerned he plays mega action star Johnny Blake who has just had big hits with the Edge of Fire action franchise 1 and 2. His agent wants to line him up with Edge of Fire 3 but he says No, explaining “Two in any series is more
than enough.” Oh if only Johnny had been around in real life many years ago to have a quiet word with the likes of Sly, Arnie, Gibson, Willis and Jennifer Lawrence! [“He’s a man who does just originals!” – Marlon Brando’s agent explaining why The Great Mumbler turned down Godpop 2.]

In A Joyous Christmas Mrs McClane had the title role of Joy in that festively-named movie. I liked the way you subtly gave her an additional association with our discussion about Xmas.

        “The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all the flowers that are in the wood
        The holly bears the crown.”

        1. Hey Bob…I will let WoC know…..she has pretty much forgotten her horror movie page…but when I told her that I had been sharing the page for Halloween week…..her response was….”Why did you take so long to share it….it should have been up for the entire month of October”.

I like the comparison of me and WoC to the Charles…..we currently do not have a dog….but she wants one…..I argue that two cats is enough…..but in the end she will win out…I wonder if I can get the dog to be named Asta?

Good trivia on Redford and Christmas lines. Thanks for the return comment…and now I go to work. Hope your day is awesome.

            HI BRUCE
On reflection with that last statement that woman of yours seems more like Gimme More than The Thin Woman. It is fitting that both Gimme and W o C married a Bruce! Though she could argue that if Christmas movies run for 3 months over here on TV her own assertion of 1 month for her horror page is reasonable. Indeed Lensman would probably be happy to gaze at it the year round!

  3. Well done Bruce or should that be WoC? Excellent update on the previous list.

Too many films for me to rummage thru. I must have seen a fair chunk of these, especially pre-1980s horror. I don’t keep up with the new ones like Conjuring, Annabelle, Ouija etc but I did enjoy Get Out and It.

Looking foward to It p.2 when it pops up for home viewing. I still haven’t seen Joker, does that count as horror?

At a glance I can see films on the chart that I wouldn’t personally classify as horror – Jaws 3, King Kong, Saturn 3, Aliens – for example. The first Alien could be classified as sci-fi horror because it scared the hell out of people but the sequels were more action orientated.

What happened to the comments we made on the previous edition of the All Horror Movie page? Gone with the wind? I can see the Top 100 Horror page is still indexed but I’m sure we were commenting on the more complete horror page before and I think I may have posted a tally on the films I saw, maybe.

An epic stats filled horror page with 4 of my favorite films in the top 5. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve. Wow….I just lost my return comment….so this is comment #2. This was WoC’s baby. She wrote this page back in October of 2017. She did it….when we were talking about you…I said….roughly….every year Steve’s request a horror movie page around Halloween….and every year…I never get around to it before Halloween has come and gone. Next thing I knew….she was working on this page…even though she never watches horror movies.

I thought Get Out was ok…but nowhere near as impressive as the hype. It was a very very creepy movie. I have not seen Joker listed as a horror movie. I have seen the new movie..The Lighthouse being listed as a horror movie.

As for movies not being horror movies…..that is one of the problems with these genre pages….movies like aws 3, King Kong, Saturn 3 and Aliens get listed in many genres. When WoC was putting this massive list together….she grabbed all the movies that got listed as “horror” on many different websites (IMDb, VideoHound). Aliens has some pretty scary moments in it. As for King Kong….the original..one of your beloved movies scared the heck out of audiences back in the day. Heck SoC3 had to be taken out of the movie theater during the spider scene in Peter Jackson’s Kong movie. That was before he became a Marine…I think he could finish the movie these days…lol.

Glad 4 of the Top 5 are favorites of yours. Good comment…thanks for sharing your horror movie knowledge.
