Rest in Peace Hugh Hudson. As I look at his career, Chariots of Fire winning the Best Picture Oscar had to be one of the best nights of his life. That is the polar opposite of me on that night. Young Cogerson, was convinced Raiders of the Lost Ark was going to win the Best Picture. Watching Raiders get that honor was something I was going to see live on television. Even though it was way past my bedtime, I was in my room with a black and white television. Volume almost all the way down, a couple of blankets at the bottom of my door so the light would not escape the room.
When Loretta Young (at the time I had no idea who she was) said Chariots of Fire was the winner, I yelled out in anger. This caught the attention of my dad who told me to shut up and go to sleep. I turned the tv off…and sat there in silence in the dark. About 30 seconds later, I thought maybe I did not hear it correctly or there was a mistake. So, I turned the television back up…hoping I would see the Indy people giving speeches….but it was still the Chariots people giving speeches. I grew to understand that popular blockbusters rarely win the big prize.
FYI – I find it interesting that on that night I hoped for a big mistake…Warren Beatty was one of the nominees. He of course would many years later be involved in the biggest Oscar mistake ever….when he announced La La Land as the winner when Moonlight was the winner.
Rest in Peace Mr. Hudson
