  1. I remember Jack Albertson best from The Poseidon Adventure, a big favorite of mine back in the 1970s. Shelley Winters, playing his wife, shouting out his name over and over, “Manny! Manny!”

I’ve seen 9 of the 31 films on the chart, favorites are – The Poseidon Adventure, Roustabout, Kissin’ Cousins, Man of a Thousand Faces, How to Murder Your Wife, The Fox and the Hound and Strike Up the Band. I’ve also seen – The Patsy and Son of Flubber.

I’ve only seen bits of Willy Wonka over the years, not the whole film, it just didn’t interest me as a young teen, preferring instead The Omega Man and Soylent Green.

Even The Godfather escaped my interest at the time, probably the title seemed so tame and harmless (the X rating should have told me it wasn’t tame). When I finally caught up with it in the early 80s it blew me away.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

Btw Strike Up the Band is a favorite of mine and was curious to see what old Albertson looked like in 1940, I found a photo on google. I’m assuming he’s the tall boy on the left?

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for the feedback.
      2. As for the photo you attached…..I guess it is him….but he looks so different than I always knew him…granted that was about 30 years before Willy Wonka. Good find.
      3. Tally count….Flora leading the with 17, followed by Bob and myself with 11 and you at 9.
      4. Shocked you the musical fan….have not seen Willy Wonka from start to finish…..it is one of my favorite musicals…with an awesome Gene Wilder performance.
      5. “Manny! Manny!…one of your favorite line readings in movie history……lol.
      6. Of your favorites…I have seen 4 of them …with The Poseidon Adventure being my favorite of those.
      7. Not surprised you have seen both Elvis/Albertson movies.
      Good stuff as always.

  2. HI BRUCE Thanks for the feedback.

Monkey on my Back is an obscure B movie that I saw on the 2nd half of a double bill way back in 1957.

It was possibly trying to cash in on the success of Sinatra’s drug-themed 1955 Man with the Golden Arm; but the B movie was reasonably good in its own right, IMDB for example giving it a 70% rating compared with 74% for Sinatra’s vehicle.

    1. Hey Bob…thanks for the information on Monkey on my Back. I feel a little better for not finding box office on that one….but we try to be as close to “ultimate” as we can…and missing movies people have fond memories is always discouraging. Maybe one day we will unlock that mystery. Good information on it’s connection to Man With The Golden Arm. Good stuff as always.

      1. HI BRUCE

Thanks for trying; but you have done far more research on the grosses subject generally than anyone could reasonably hope for so you have nothing to regret.

    1. Hey Dan. Good information on Jack Albertson. Surprised he is in the Top 1000. Not thinking he made the old list that you used to share. Looks like his most frequent Oracle co-star was Edward Andrews….I think I only know him from your lists. 22 Oscar winners is below average….heck if you take out The Posideon Adventure he is down to 18. Good stuff as always.

  4. I have seen 17 Jack Albertson movies.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is The Poseidon Adventure.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Son of Flubber.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is How to Save Your Marriage (and Ruin Your Life).

    Don’t Go Near the Water
    Teacher’s Pet
    Strike Up the Band

    The Fox and the Hound
    How to Murder Your Wife
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
    Period of Adjustment
    The Subject Was Roses

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for the thoughts on Jack Albertson. Another Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner off the list of people to write about. I have seen 11 of his movies…so I am not too far behind you. I have seen 6 of your favorites with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory being my favorite. That movie gets better every year. I like The Poseidon Adventure but it is not a big favorite mine….even with Joel providing some of the music. Good stuff as always.

  5. To me Jack when he wore his trademark mustache looked a bit like Keenan Wynn as well as Arthur O’Connell. Actor, singer dancer character performer Jack enjoyed success via four mediums -big screen, small screen, radio, Broadway – apparently earning a career net worth today of $87 million along the way until his death in 1981.

On top of his cinematic film career Jack appeared in just under 60 TV productions; and indeed I first came to know him most for his role of Lt Harry Evans of the NYPD in 20 episodes of The Thin Woman television series [1957-59]. Jack’s final two performances of any description were in 2 TV movies released in 1982 after his death the previous year.

I have\ seen 11 of the movies listed above and my faves among them are: Poseidon Adventure, Don’t Go Near the Water and especially Doris Day’s Lover Come Back and Teacher’s Pet. I also liked him in 1957’s drug addiction film Monkey on My Back, not covered above. Good choice of subject for a new page so “Voted Up!”

    1. Hey Bob. Thanks for sharing your movie and television knowledge on Jack Albertson. Wow…$87 million net worth….thinking he invested very wisely. I agree with you about Albertson and O’Connell. I had to add a picture so people could see how closely they looked alike. Interesting point about Wynn. I would put Arthur Kennedy in that group….I often get confused on Albertson, O’Connell and Kennedy….when think which character actor played which role. Tally count. Flora 17, you and me at 11. I spent some time looking for information on Monkey on My Back….but came up empty on that movie…sorry about that. Thanks for the visit and the vote up.
