Possibly Interesting Facts On Jane Alexander
1. Jane Seyferth Quigley was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1939. She was married to Robert Alexander from 1962 to 1974….thus Jane Quigley became Jane Alexander.
2. Jane Alexander’s major break in acting came in 1967 when she played Eleanor Backman in the original production of Howard Sackler’s The Great White Hope at Arena Stage in Washington, DC. Like her co-star, James Earl Jones, she went on to play the part both on Broadway (1968), winning a Tony Award for her performance, and in the film version (1970), which earned her an Oscar® nomination.
3. Jane Alexander is one of only a few performers to receive an Oscar® nomination for their movie debut, as Best Actress in a Leading Role for The Great White Hope (1970), and one of even fewer performers to receive an Oscar® nomination the same role in which they had already received Broadway’s Tony® award as Best Supporting or Featured Actress (Dramatic) for “The Great White Hope” (1969), on stage, one year earlier.
4. Jane Alexander has appeared in three films that were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar®: All the President’s Men (1976), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and The Cider House Rules (1999). Of those, only Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) won Best Picture.
5. Jane has triumphed just as notably on TV. She perfectly embodied the unglamorous role of Anna Eleanor Roosevelt opposite Edward Herrmann’s FDR in the TV movies Eleanor and Franklin (1976) and Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years (1977) and was Emmy-nominated both times for her efforts. Decades later she would portray FDR’s mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, in HBO’s Warm Springs (2005) starring Kenneth Branagh and Cynthia Nixon and won the coveted award for ‘Best Supporting Actress’. Throughout the years she would play a myriad of quality leads in such TV-movies as A Circle of Children (1977); Arthur Miller’s Playing for Time (1980); which earned her a second Emmy, the title role in Calamity Jane (1984); Malice in Wonderland (1985), in which she portrayed notorious gossip maven Hedda Hopper; Blood & Orchids (1986), and; In Love and War (1987).

You know what Jane Alexander film I’ve seen the most. I don’t know the name of it. Living in New York I have been called to jury duty 7 times (never been picked for a trial). When you go in they always show you an instructional film on how the jury system works, hosted by Ms. Alexander. I’ve only seen it 6 times because they don’t show it with federal jury duty, they have their own film.

Hey Dan….that is great information….that your most seen Jane Alexander movie is the “jury tutorial” in New York City. Getting called 7 times seems like a lot of times. I have been called 3 times myself. Twice for district court and once for federal court. I never saw a case get tried.
Ok…on to Jane and her career. Very surprised she made the Top 1000. I guess those television movies got her into the Top 1000. Morgan Freeman gets the honor as her most frequent Oracle co-star. Michael Caine should have another movie on the list….she played his deceased wife in Last Love. Looking at her second list….20 Oscar winning co-stars is pretty good for her limited movie career. As always…your lists provide lots of trivia nuggets.
On top of her film career Jane has appeared in 47 television productions between 1969 and the present including in 1984 the role of Calamity Jane; and Wikipedia lists 14 stage productions that she featured in since 1970 until the present.
The plays include theatrical [and movie] classics like Hamlet; The Heiress; Night of the Iguana; and The Visit [1992] which deals with themes such as women’s rights and democracy and in it Jane had the lead which had been played by Ingrid Bergman in the 1964 film. Overall IMDB credits Jane with 8 acting awards and 24 nominations.
I have seen Jane in 4 movies: All the President’s Men; Kramer v Kramer; Brubaker; and A Gunfight. The latter was unusual in that it had in the same version two endings one after the other in which a different one of the 2 gunfighters who faced each other in a shootout [Kirk Douglas and Johnny Cash] won the duel. The audience were invited to choose in their own minds which ending they preferred. Personally I considered that too gimmicky for my own liking but Kirk and Johnny are always enjoyable – and young Jane lovely! – to watch.
Nothing in the pipeline for Jane at the moment; but aged 80 she is still going strong as I have indicated above and this year already has appeared in (3) of the 8-episode series Tales from the Loop (2) the play Grand Horizons which ran from December 2019 until March 1st just past. Definitely one of acting’s great longevity artists going from a beauty in her youth to a still fine and distinguishing looking elderly veteran. Who would challenge her entitlement to this new page?
Hey Bob…thanks for checking out our Jane Alexander page. Good information on her television roles and her awards. She started off very very strong….4 nominations in 9 movies. Then nothing since….it has been 37 years since her 4th nomination. Thanks for the tally count and the trivia about A Gunfight. I wonder how many picked Kirk and how many picked Johnny. I agree…a bit gimmicky…..but interesting…though it does take one “out of the movie”. Good stuff as always.
HI BRUCE
Thanks for feedback. Re A Gunfight [aka just “Gunfight” in the US I think] I am an old fashioned western buff who likes to see one good guy only in a movie and him winning the gun duel! I don’t want to see The Duke or Laddie LOSE any battle!!
Over here A Gunfight was cut by 8 seconds to remove the shooting of a snake. We’re very politically correct in this country about not showing ‘cruelty to animals’ on our screens!!
