When I first saw she was listed as a winner for Power of the Dog I thought I had missed the Oscars this year. After reading the comments I understand now. Her movies are well done, but not ones I enjoy.
I have seen 6 of Jane’s films, the highest ranked I have not seen is Bright Star. I did not like Power of the Dog and never watch the Oscars. You can look the winners up later on the internet and just see who won instead of wasting all night.
Hey Dan. Tally counts: Dan 6, Cogerson 4 and Steve 2. I think The Power of the Dog is a movie loved by professional critics but only considered ok by the general movie going public. Professional critics rate it at 94%. While general audiences have it around 73%. That is a pretty big difference. Sounds like you, me and Steve even think 73% is too high.
As for the Oscar shows….over the last few years it seems to have moved from being a show about movies….to a show that seems only designed to make political statements in acceptance speeches. So I can see you not wanting to watch that. I wonder if I will be able to avoid the show….normally the Oscar show is one of the busiest nights for UMR….and it eventually pulls me. I have already updated some pages with some people that seem to be shoe ins for awards. Jane Campion for example. Good stuff as always.
Hey Steve. Thanks for the thoughts on our Jane Campion page. I have seen 4 of her movies. I have seen the two you have seen, plus The Piano and To Each His Own Cinema. The Piano was ok, but not one I will ever re-visit. Which like you, is the same way I feel about The Power of the Dog. I feel Sam Elliott made some good points about that one….though as you say the acting is top notch. As for the Oscars….at this time I think for the first time in years I will be skipping them. I have seen every Oscar broadcast since the Raiders of the Lost Ark year to last year…..with the exception of the year Babe got so many Oscar nominations….for some reason I boycotted it that year because Babe made me so mad. This year it will because of lack of interest in the nominees. There is not a single category that has me excited to find out the winner. I have also read that CODA is picking up some momentum for Best Picture Winner. I feel confident that Campion will win the Best Director Oscar…which is way UMR has already given her the award on this page…lol. Hope all is going well you and your YouTube channel. You are the man!
I’ve seen two Jane Campion films – In the Cut and Power of the Dog.
I still haven’t seen The Piano, Schindler’s List’s biggest threat at the Oscars in early 1994.
Power of the Dog had some great acting from the 4 lead actors but it’s not a film I’ll be in a hurry to watch again. Curious to see how well it does at the Oscars, it was the favourite at one time. Coda seems to have picked up some momentum.
