  1. Hi, Jane Wyman was a very good actress in my humble opinion. I remember when you taped the Movie Magnificent Obsession for me in between your college courses. You taped in on a VCR tape and believe it or not I still have it. That was a very good movie with Rock Hudson along with All That Heaven Allows. I liked and have seen most of her movies and I would like to see LUCY GALLANT with Charlton Heston but it never gets on TV. That was a good movie too. I knew she was married to Ronald Reagan but did not know she was married five times. Thanks so much for this site – good luck with your site in 2018. MAY YOU BREAK ALL YOUR CURRENT RECORDS ON YOUR MOVIES, ETC. THANK YOU……………..I will have to pull up the site you did on you father shortly. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    1. Hey Bern1960….I figured you would have to mention one of your all-time favorite movies. I have actually not seen Magnificent Obsession…..neither this version or the Irene Dunne version. Hmmm….strange that Lucy Gallant does not play on television more often….I have never seen it on DVD or VHS (back in the day). Thanks for the good wishes for 2018…..the site seems to keep getting bigger and bigger. Dad’s Top 5 is still here….under Site Index….and in the Cogerson Life section. Thanks for stopping by.

    1. Hey Katie….WOW….you checked out our Jane Wyman page….I am impressed….I bet Pitch Perfect 3 had something to do with this…..lol. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. Mr. Hirschhorn, seldom have I read a comment so fitting! Wyman’s Oscar winning performance was more than deserving of the world’s most coveted acting award. Same could be said, in my opinion, about Louise Rainer’s win as O Lan in The Good Earth and, perhaps, Vivien Leigh’s Blanche du Bois in Streetcar named Desire.
I have seen 24 of the movies listed, my first Jane Wyman film has been The Glass Menagerie, and although much too old for the part of Laura, I immediately fell in love with this sensitive actress (must have been about 16 at the time). I have stated before that I am a huge fan of Sirk’s All that Heaven allows, and other favorites include The Lost Weekend, The Yearling (she was great as the outwardly hard mother with a very soft heart), Miracle In The Rain, a four hanky movie if ever there was one, So Big, The Blue Veil (another sensitive performance, surrounded by great actors like Charles Laughton and Joan Blondell) and that underrated Hitchcock movie Stage Fright- although in my book she had to play second fiddle to Dietrich in that one, though billed above her. Wyman could also be funny and was quite charming in Here Comes the Groom, where she prooved to be an able songstress, too. Jane Wyman has stated that she was very grateful towards WB for keeping her employed during that first decade, when she didn’t bring in any money into the studio’s cash box and therefore never complained about the poor parts she was assigned to after she had acquired some marquee value. Thus, Wyman had her share of turkeys even after Johnny Belinda (A Kiss In the Dark, The Lady Takes A Sailor), searched for good parts at other studios while fulfilling her contractual obligations towards her home studio. The only time she openly voiced her disapproval was when WB did nothing to promote Miracle in the Rain, a project the catholic Wyman had harboured high hopes for. I’m not going into detail again about how much I enjoyed her TV series Falcon Crest, but I am also familiar with a lot of her other TV work.
On top of her Academy Award win and noms, Wyman was nominated twice for an Emmy Award for her recurring role in Jane Wyman Presents The Fireside Theatre as early as the late 50’s, won 3 Golden Globes between 1949 and 1984 plus a World Film Favorite Award (Henrietta Award “World Film Favorite” in 1951), was named Photoplay’s Most Popular Female Star in 1950 and received 2 Stars on LA’s Walk of Fame in 1960- one for her work in movies, one for her work on television.
Thank you very much for this “christmas present” 😉

    1. Hey Lupino.
      1. Glad you liked Joel’s thoughts on Wyman and Johnny Belinda.
      2. You have put Wyman in some excellent company…Leigh, and Rainer….awesome threesome of actresses.
      3. 24 Wyman movies seen….pretty impressive….I am at….counting….5….so you have seen almost 5 times my amount.
      4. Sounds like Wyman and The Glass Menagerie made a lasting impression on you…..thanks for sharing that movie memory.
      5. One of the stellar performances you mentioned…I have not seen too many of them….I have Stage Fright, Johnny Belinda, Lost Weekend, The Yearling and Night and Day. With the exception of Night and Day….I enjoyed all of them.
      6. I want to see All That Heaven Allows, The Blue Veil and Miracle in the Rain.
      7. I do not usually feature television shows….but over the years her Falcon’s Crest is garnered lots of comments….so I felt like I needed to show a picture of that show….it bumped The Lost Weekend from that spot.
      8. I agree she was a well honored actress….with lots of Oscar and Golden Globe award love.
      9. Happy to give you a late Xmas present.
      Good feedback as always.

      1. Hey Bruce,
I couldn’t agree more with you on Night and Day…though it was none of the actor’s fault, the film was just horribly scripted, imo.
Pollyanna is a nice film to watch with kids, Hayley Mills was just starting her short but hefty love story with the movie going audience here. It cost more than 3 million to make and earned just 3.75 million- didn’t kill Hayleys career, but wasn’t enough to get Wyman off to a fresh start.
By the way, Wyman wasn’t first choice for Angela Channing in FC- she only got the offer after Barbara Stanwyck wasn’t interested, as one of her biographers stated.
Thanks for your kind replies to my post in the past year…only my first with your website 😉

        1. Hey Lupino
          1. I think my favorite quote from Night and Day….was from Cole Porter….”It should be good…..none of the stuff in the movie is true”…..lol. I think the Kevin Kline version of Cole’s life story is much more accurate.
          2. There is only one scene in that entire movie that I like….it is when Cary thinks Alexis Smith has dozens of kids…..funny scene….with a great Grant reaction.
          3. Your comments have been awesome this year…..glad you found our website….this year had more changes than any other…..hopefully the massive construction project was not too distracting.
          4. Good trivia on Wyman not being the first choice…..I think Stanwyck would have been fine…..but Wyman shined too.
          Good stuff.

  3. In their book, Films in America, Martin Quigley, Jr. and Richard Gertner had this to say of Jane Wyman’s Johnny Belinda characterization: “The Wyman performance is incandescent….the innocence and beauty of the character were all written in her eloquent face. She won an Oscar and seldom has it been so justified”.
