Possibly Interesting Facts About Janet Leigh

1. Jeanette Helen Morrison was born  in Merced, California in 1927.

2.  In winter 1945, Janet Leigh was discovered by actress Norma Shearer.  Shearer showed talent agent Lew Wasserman a photograph she had seen of Leigh while vacationing at Sugar Bowl, the ski resort where the girl’s parents worked.  Shearer later recalled that “that smile made it the most fascinating face I had seen in years. I felt I had to show that face to somebody at the studio.

3.   Janet Leigh secured a starring role in 1947’s The Romance of Rosy Ridge as soon as she reached Hollywood…despite having no previous acting experience.

4.  Van Johnson was responsible for her stage name. While they were filming 1947’s The Romance of Rosy Ridge, he suggested she shorten her first name to Janet. He also thought that, since the film they were doing was a civil war drama, Lee would go well as her last name. But then he suggested she spell it Leigh. She was concerned there might a problem in being confused with Vivien Leigh; but then Van Johnson reminded her of Van Heflin. He said “there’s two Van’s and it hasn’t hurt either of us”.

5.  Janet Leigh was married 4 times and had two children.  Both of her daughters (Kelly & Jamie Lee) became actresses as well.  Jamie Lee Curtis has been starring in movies for almost 40 years.

6.  Janet Leigh made 5 movies with her third husband, Tony Curtis: 1953’s Houdini, 1954’s The Black Shield of Falworth, 1958’s The Vikings, 1958’s The Perfect Furlough and 1960’s Who Was That Lady?

7.  Janet Leigh wrote four books: “There Really Was a Hollywood” (1984–an autobiography); “Psycho: Behind the Scenes of the Classic Thriller” (1995, co-authored with Christopher Nickens); “House of Destiny” (1996–a novel); and “The Dream Factory” (2002–a novel).

8. Janet Leigh and Psycho trivia:  (1)  She stopped taking showers after filming Psycho…took baths for the rest of her life.  (2) She only worked on the movie for three weeks.  (3) One of those three weeks was filming the shower scene.  (4)  Hitchcock hired her because he knew audiences would be shocked to see a star of her stature killed off early in the movie.

9.  Janet Leigh’s agent initially rejected Leigh’s role in 1958’s Touch of Evil due to the low salary offered without even consulting the actress. Orson Welles, anticipating this, sent a personal letter to the actress, telling her how much he looked forward to their working together. Leigh, furious, confronted her agent telling him that getting directed by Welles was more important than any paycheck.

  1. HI STEVE

1 Stop it! Just because Bruce has been reproducing some fine miniature posters and stills of late doesn’t mean you have to stray onto his patch and mine and start babbling about adjusted grosses!

2 So don’t let the contest get out of hand or it will conjure up images of those silent movies where people endlessly chucked custard pies at each other.

3 $625 million would probably be the kind of gross that Psycho would attract if it was released today at current movie ticket prices. However because the value of the dollar inflated far less than movie ticket prices over the years the US Bureau Labor Stats Consumer Price Index method estimates that Psycho’s actual 1960 worldwide grosses would have the purchasing power of $421.19 million in today’s dollars and the film’s production cost would be $6.741 nowadays .

4 WH doesn’t like the Bureau’s method of inflation calculation for movie grosses but whatever way one looks at it the film obviously made a massive profit. I too favour WH and Moho’s ticket price inflation method but am always curious about the CPI calculation. 5

5 However there also the Work Horse must some take credit as the “founder of the feast” because without the Cogerson stats as a reliable base I wouldn’t usually be able to use the Bureau of Labor Stats method as normally there is little information in the public domain about actual figures especially worldwide ones at the time of a film’s release I bet that you as a stats Philistine are sorry you now repeated Bruce’s Psycho figure!

    1. I’ve always been interested in box office grosses, dear boy. [Bob rolls his eyes] Especially the latest movies [Bob winces] but it’s fascinating to see how successful one of my ooold favorites e.g. Psycho has been and how it compares in adjusted dollars. $626m is on a par with some of the blockbusters of the year, like the Stephen King hit ‘It’ which has grossed $683m so far, worldwide.

Looking at box office grosses is a fun pastime but currently I’m finding reviews, ratings, stills and movie posters a lot more interesting. [wink] I mean who remembers the box office grosses anyway, does anyone? What was the domestic gross of Shane in 1953? The Godfather in 1972? Bob? Come on… no no don’t look it up. 😉

      1. Hey Steve…..I might not remember the actual amount….but I have a pretty good idea of 1000s of movies and their box office totals. Those numbers are blurred more now….as we deal with adjusted gross so much….I am forgetting……but knowing if a movie was a smash or dud….is something worth knowing.

It just shows how successful this year’s It was…..topping Psycho already…a R rated horror destroying the box office…..who saw that coming? Speaking of Psycho…..highly recommend checking out the attached Psycho trailer….I think you will really enjoy seeing Hitch at his best.

        1. Hey Bruce, I keep forgetting you have trailers attached to some of those titles, good stuff.

That Psycho trailer is one of the most famous of them all, I bought it on 8mm film way back in the 70s. Imagine buying a movie trailer! I also bought the trailers to Enter the Dragon, Fist of Fury (aka The Chinese Connection) and The Big Boss (aka Fists of Fury).

The trailer to Big Boss cost me £8 in 1979. That’s the equivelant of £37 in todays money, for a three minute trailer!

          1. Hey Steve….we have close to 1000 trailers added in so far and more coming every day. I am actually having fun adding them in.

The Psycho trailer is over 6 minutes long….but really fun to watch. Buying trailers? A true movie ? fan. Did you not realize You Tube was coming? ….lol.

    2. Hey Bob
      1. Steve has slowly….and I mean slowly….turned to the dark side when it comes to looking at box office grosses.
      2. One day young Skywalker will be on our side…lol.
      3. It is not that I do not like your Consumer Price Index method…..I understand it….and I see it’s worth….just prefer seeing the adjusted gross more.
      4. Hopefully since going to a “dynamic” website….you have stopped seeing the “discrepancy” errors you were seeing so often when the site was not dynamic.
      5. Now it appears our biggest issue is ….having a movie in the wrong year. But we are getting those errors fixed too…..though Cogerson Daughter #1 would say grammar and spelling is our biggest issue….lol.
      6. Glad you have liked our movie stats….and glad they help you with your research.
      7. As for Psycho….like you said….no matter how you look at it…..it was a monster hit.

  2. Nice, a fact-filled page on lovely Janet Leigh. Leigh will always be remembered as the victim of the most famous murder in movie history.

I’ve seen 14 of the 48 films listed on the chart. Favorites include – Psycho, The Vikings, The Manchurian Candidate, The Fog, Touch of Evil and Scaramouche.

Looking at the worldwide grosses – Psycho was amazingly successful – $626m adjusted worldwide gross. And people were begging Hitchcock not to make that film, he had the last laugh, it turned out to be his most profitable movie and only cost $800k to make.

An impressive top 3 on the critics chart – Touch of Evil, Manchurian Candidate and Psycho. All scored 10 out of 10 from my sources. I have Touch of Evil at no.2 on my Janet Leigh video, it’s no.3 on yours. There is only a fraction of a point between them.

Enjoyed the trivia, another excellent page Bruce, thanks for the video share.

    Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for the feedback….it is always greatly appreciated.
      2. Wow…I am actually pretty close to your total….as I am at 12.
      3. Seen and enjoyed all of your favorites.
      4. Scaramouche is an awesome movie….with some great sword fighting scenes. It along with The Sundowners are two classic movies that I only recently discovered.
      5. Psycho was huge….love the trailer I attached…..it is fun seeing Hitch walking around the iconic movie set….before it was iconic.
      6. I agree with you about the Top 3 critic score…..one of the best trilogy any UMR subject has.
      7. Good to know we have the same Top 3….great minds thinking alike.
      Thanks for the vote up.

  3. My 4 star Janet Leigh performances from my book…Rating the Movie Stars

    If Winter Comes (1948)
    Act of Violence (1949)

    Psycho (1960)
    The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
One Is A Lonely Night (1972)

    1. Hey Joel…..how your 4 star performances compare to our UMR scoring system

If Winter Comes (1948)….34th of 48 movies
Act of Violence (1949)…..24th of 48 movies
That Forsyte Woman (1949)….11th of 48 movies
Holiday Affair (1949)….16th of 48 movies
      Scaramouche (1952)….6th of 48 movies
Rogue Cop (1954)…..29th of 48 movies

The Manchurian Candidate (1962)…7th of 48 movies
One Is A Lonely Night (1972)….46th of 48 movies

Looks like the big difference is with One Is A Lonely Night….my sources are pretty harsh when it comes to that movie.

  4. Janet Leigh claims she was dismayed when given the lead role in The Romance of Rosy Ridge because she lacked training as an actress. However some performers are naturally skillful, having what Robert Mitchum calls “an ear.” Leigh belonged to that select group.

All her early pictures show a warmly appealing girl-to-bring-home-to-mother type, an image she sustained through Holiday Affair with Robert Mitchum. One felt she was worthy of better things though it took Hitchcock’s horrifying Psycho to finally show her full dimension as an actress.

      1. Hey Dan…..I thought I saw a mistake…but there was Thomas Mitchell near the bottom. It looks like you have all of them…..unless Lassie got a special Oscar. 30 with less than 50 movies is probably on average. Always fun to see your lists broken down like this. Great feedback.

    2. Hey Dan.
      1. As always….thanks for sharing this information.
      2. Huge lists…so huge..it is surprising that she was not on the Oracle list.
      3. I guess…not having anybody in the Top 143….does not help the cause.
      4. The first list is loaded with some awesome stars.
      5. How to smuggle a hernia across the border….is a short I knew nothing about before doing this page.
      6. Second list…seeing a Frank Sinatra listed under Pepe, makes me think I need to see that movie and figure out which stars need Pepe added to their UMR pages.
