  1. I actual saw Jamon, Jamon in London in 1993. I think it’s the only foreign language film I’ve seen in a cinema outside the United States. I saw Supergirl in Madrid in 1984 in Spanish but that was originally an English speaking film. I did see it 4 months before it opened in the U.S. and it was missing a scene (somebody eating some small creature), but I digress.

    1. Hey Dan. Thanks for these great trivia lists. That is cool that you saw that movie in London, not thinking in the odds that were been too high since that movie barely made any money and not thinking you’ve been in London that many times. Wow both list are pretty small. I guess all the years in Spain lowered his Oracle connections. I suspect he has a nice long career ahead of him in supporting roles. Looking at his Oscar winners only 12. I would have guessed a lot more. Hope you are staying safe and healthy and as always your contributions are greatly appreciated.

  2. Javier Bardem, good actor, good UMR subject.

I’ve seen 7 of the 28 films on the chart. Favorites are – Skyfall, No Country For Old Men, Pirates of the Caribbean and Collateral.

I’ve also seen Vicky Christina Aguilera (which I remember liking but have only watched it once so far), The Counselor and Mother!

Looking at the box office chart… Skyfall was huge! $1.2bn worldwide adjusted. That might never happen again, especially with the virus always on people’s minds.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve. Thanks for your feedback and visit to our Javier Bardem page. I have seen 16 of his movies to your seven. I have seen all seven that you have seen. We agree about Mother, as I did not like that one either. We disagree about no country for old men, I still can’t get over the ending. I know the ending is faithful to the book but I did not like it.I agree about Skyfall, not thinking will ever see another James Bond movie hit those marks.

  3. GOOD MORNING BIG BOY!:

If you are ever updating Bardem’s new page you may wish to consider including in the main body of your profile [ie the Trivia section] the personal accolades from Pacino and Coppola that I mention in my own posts today.

It could be though that you have already seen them but were not interested as they were not aimed at Archie or Thins. However they did impress ME [“So what!” says you]. Anyway here is the precise wording in Wiki about the trivia concerned.

“1/After starring in about two dozen films in his native country, Bardem gained international recognition in Julian Schnabel’s Before Night Falls in 2000, portraying Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas.[12] He received praise from his idol Al Pacino; the message Pacino left on Bardem’s answering machine was something he considers one of the most beautiful gifts he has ever received

2/Francis Ford Coppola singled out Bardem as an heir to, and even improvement on, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson and Robert De Niro”.

    1. Hey Bob. Thanks for the further information on your trivia. Javier Bardem is well liked in the acting community. His latest movie opened up very quietly, but it seems like he’s doing a good job of balancing types of movies, From Blockbuster franchise is too small artsy movies. Thanks for all the comments, they are greatly appreciated. As I said in the other, I will add this trivia to the page you very soon.

  4. 5/In Item 2 of the Trivia Section above Bruce highlights Javier’s fine work in Before Night Falls which I think is the film that brought Javier international recognition. Pride of place among the accolades for that one alongside his Oscar and Golden Globe nominations is praise from Javier’s own acting idol Al Pacino.

6/In fact switching on his telephone answering machine Javier was thrilled by an out-of-the blue congratulatory message from Al. [as I suppose Stallone have been thrilled if he had switched on HIS machine and found a message from Tennessee Williams which said “YOU are the one to recreate my Stanley on the big screen!”]

7/Indeed Javier called the Pacino message “one of the most beautiful gifts of my life.”; and to match that Francis Ford Coppola called Javier the heir to Nicholson/DeNiro and Pacino [Marlon who?!]

8/In the pipeline for Javier are a movie at post-production stage and one at pre- production stage and a TV mini-series at pre-production stage. It has also been announced that he will play The Monster in a remake of Bride of Frankenstein. There is no information yet about who will play Victor Frankenstein.

9/This new page is “Voted Up!” because (1) The great Legends apart I cannot think of a more professionally deserving object of Cogerson site recognition than Javier (2) Bruce continues his tradition of diversity in choice of subjects for profiling

    1. Hey Bob. Good trivia about his compliment from Al Pacino. I will add that piece of trivia to the page when I get home. Currently on a walk and away from my computer. I’ve seen a few of his early Spanish movies, but not the one that got him famous. I will have to track down that movie and watch it. Good stuff onto the next comment.

      1. HI BRUCE

        Thanks for the feedback.

I was in fact surprised that you were able to cover the Spanish movies that you did so I actually found those a BONUS.

The modern actors usually drool over Nicholson/DeNiro/Brando when quoting thespians who influenced them so it’s good to see “Little Al – he’s Big Al since The Godfather” getting a turn.

        1. Hey Bob. Thanks for the kind words…..maybe one day….I can uncover those Spanish movie’s box office grosses. I added in your trivia about Al, Javier and the answering machine. Good stuff as always.

          1. HI BRUCE:

Thanks for adding in the Pacino accolade. There can be so much back-biting in the acting profession that I think it should be recorded when one honours the other – especially when a star of Pacino’s artistic stature praises a non-Hollywood virtual unknown as Javier was at the time. It’s easy enough gushing superlatives about Brando because nobody but Joel’s going to disagree with you!!

According to Peter Ustinov he and Laughton were great friends on the set of Spartacus until one day Charles asked him who he thought was the world’s greatest actor at the time and Peter replied “Olivier of course.” and Charles wouldn’t speak to Peter again. In theTV interview in which Ustinov told that story he seemed quite amusted by Charles’ huffs.

  5. 1/Alongside his ‘mainstream’ career Javier has been active in the Spanish cinema since 1990 and in the tables above Bruce covers a number of his Spanish or Spanish-associated films [ie those made in association with other countries] such as High Heels/Jamon Jamon and his very latest one Everybody Knows [Todos lo Saben]released just last year.

2/I have seen none of his Spanish movies and my favourites among the ones that I have seen are Collateral/Eat Pray Love/and of course No Country for Old Men [which if made in old Hollywood starring Al Leach and/or Randy Scott would probably have had to be called No Country for Young Men!].

3/Javier has a reported net worth of $20 million and IMDB credits him with 104 acting awards and 87 noms. [191 combined recognitions]. I think that’s a tremendous tally for a performer whose origins were in the Spanish cinema: normally only Hollywood-promoted performers can rack up such a body of formal artistic recognition though some prestigious Brits have also collected numerous ones: Dame Judy Dench for example with 66 awards and 175 noms [collectively 241 recognitions]

4/As of January 2018, Bardem became an environmental activist with Greenpeace for protection of Antarctica. An infliction that he shares with my Brit idol Sir Dirk Bogarde is that Javier lacks the kind of bodily co-ordination that enables most people to drive and Javier gets behind the wheel for only staged set pieces in his movies. He likes to refer to himself not as an actor but a “worker” [Sly/Statham/Rock Jonson write that down and memorize it!]

    1. Hey Bob. Thanks for your thoughts and feedback on Javier Bardem. He’s early Spanish movies required the most research in doing this page, and sadly I was unable to include many of those movies. Thanks for the information on his activism and his net worth. Good stuff as always, to you next time and I go.
