While he dismissed him, a friend who had come along mentioned that Van Damme had just done Predator with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Hey Dan
1. I guess the power of direct to dvd movies shows up on these lists.
2. This is making me wonder….if the fine folks of UVA should be a little more selective in their database. Seems if they were to limit their database to just movies released in theaters….their list would be filled with more stars…..just thinking.
3. So JCVD is climbing up the charts…..that is so hard to believe with his hey day being so far behind him.
4. Seeing M. Emmett Walsh at #115….made me ask….is he still alive?….Happy to report…yes he is….and has 4 movies in post production.
5. Wow….if you take out his Kung Fu Panda movies….only F. Whitaker and C. Heston would be left on his Oscar list…..shocking that more Oscar winners did not want to fight JCVD….lol.
Good information as always…..Happy New Year.
Timecop, Cyborg and The Quest are my favorites.
Hey Lars….I liked TimeCop a lot. I actually have not seen Cyborg. And thought The Quest was good…I liked that Sir Roger Moore is in the movie. Thanks for sharing your favorite JCVD movies.
1 I am pleased to see that JCVD has now joined Steven Seagal in receiving a Cogerson page. This partially counter-balances the derision with which these two likeable and entertaining action stars are sometimes greeted elsewhere. Recently Seagal has been mocked for claiming the FBI have ruined his career by allegedly linking his name to criminal organisations.
2 In the sitcom Frasier the latter’s father Martin is a great JCVD fan and having taken Frasier to see one of JCVD’s movies Martin asks his son if he has learned anything, to which Frasier sarcastically replies “Yes, if a man can kick high enough into the air he can repeatedly dodge a heavy rain of otherwise fatal bullets!”
4 JCVD’s Cogerson stats table reveals that once the two Kung Fu Panda voice only movies and the Expendables 2 ensemble one are removed from calculations the remaining 21 stand-alone JCVD movies have a total adjusted domestic gross of only approx. $765 million which give an average gross of around $36.5 million for those movies.
5 However I have seen a small overall JCVD Box Office Mojo table which suggests that the average JCVD movie engenders overseas 3 times its domestic gross. If applied to Bruce’s domestic stats that equation would give an average adjusted global figure of around $145 million for a stand-alone JCVD movie.
6 Moreover Wikipedia has suggested that the domestic gross of a typical JCDV movie has traditionally just about covered its production costs so that the buoyant WW grosses would then put his movies into a healthy profit. Wiki also records though that the career of JCVD like that of Seagal has now gone into decline with recent releases going straight to video. The FBI would seem to have lot to answer for!
Hey Bob
1. Glad you like our JCVD page.
2. Before school let out, I was talking to a teacher….and scan the UMR index……and he offered up lots of selections….like Wesley Snipes and JCVD……his thought process was getting the site more diverse.
3. When I first started doing these actors far outweighed the actresses….but with some constructive criticism we were able to get lots more actresses done….I think we are now closing in on 200 actress pages.
4. Interesting point about the FBI and Steven Seagal…….there are many factors in why his career slowed……but the FBI would be far down the list of the “real” reasons why.
5. Good stat breakdown on JCVD stand alone movies. I will have to see what worldwide box office numbers are out there….a quick look while doing this page showed that it was best to do domestic rank vs worldwide rank….but I can put some totals at the bottom of the page.
6. I was playing around with the titles of JCVD’s direct to home entertainment movies….using the short titles to make up sentences….for example.
In Hell, the Replicant Derailed The Order by using 6 Bullets and A Pound of Flesh. (that is actually 5 full JCVD titles in one sentence).
or
The Solders, like keeping their Enemies Closer so they can either Kill’em All, send them to Heist School or Until Death. (5 more JCVD movies)…..well I had fun.
7. Maybe we can blame Bruce’s dip on the FBI as well.
Good feedback.
Hey Bob. Just added in worldwide grosses for 17 JCVD grosses. If you add up the 17 movies…..then you get a gross of $3.145 Billion….or $185 million per movie. If you take out the two Kung Fu Panda movies and Expendables 2…..you are left with $1.57 Billion or $112 million per movie. So using the domestic average we see a multiplier of 2.3 between domestic and worldwide gross.
HI BRUCE
1 Noted thanks. The way in which you have set out the 17WW grosses in the one table and the domestic grosses in the top table gives as clear as possible a picture of the true situation. Any figures that I have seen from Mojo do bot break down the overall totals in the fashion that you have done so this has been a useful exchange of posts from my viewpoint..
2 I read that at one stage Seagal was threatening to sue the FBI for defamation of character and loss of earnings. I never learned whether he went ahead with the legal action but if he did I’m sure he found the FBI a tougher opponent than for example those drug cartels that he vanquished with such ease in his movies!
BOB
Hey Bob….Box Office Mojo does not have many worldwide grosses….I had to go to my backup source for many of these movies. Actually looking at it….I am thinking I should have done the table with worldwide grosses versus domestic rank….71% is normally enough movies to make it a worldwide table….I might go back and do that. Glad you like the recently added Worldwide numbers.
Love the attached video on Predator. Freaking hilarious. It looks like van Damme is wearing a Gumby suit. My older brother loved his movies. We would wear out our VHS copies. Loved Streetfighter as kid. At the time I did not realize Sudden Death was a Die Hard clone. So I thought it was very original. I have checked a few episodes of his Net Flixx show Jean Claude van Johnson. Watching him do comedy is like watching a car wreck. Thanks for this page which brought back some good memories from my young days.
Hey Taylor.
1. I knew he was supposed to be in Predator….being seeing JCVD in the orange “Gumby” suit is really funny to watch….so I am glad you were able to check it out.
2. My big question to you….is….do you still think Street Fighter is a good movie? As a kid I thought Gus (Disney’s football playing mule movie) was the best movie ever made.
3. Shame shame….thinking Sudden Death was an original idea…..lol. Like so many movies back then…..it was one of many “Die Hard on….” movies. Die Hard on a plane, Die Hard on a train, Die Hard on a boat, Die Hard at a Hockey Game….it just goes on and on.
4. I have not seen any of his Net Flixx shows…..I did see his JCVD….which was pretty interesting….though faded pretty quickly.
5. Glad this page brought back some good memories….thanks for stopping by.
Jean-Claude van Damme, or the muscles from Brussels as he was known in his “heyday”…I’ve only seen 5 of his movies, and let’s put it gently…no favorites here, but the best might have been The Expandables 2. Funny how Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2 boost up his box office clout, I doubt anybody went to watch those movies because of his vocal involvement.
Hey Lupino
1. His “heyday” was over 20 years ago.
2. My ex-wife was in love with him…..so I saw many of his movies in theaters.
3. I have seen 10 of his movies…so I actually double your total….patting myself on the back…that does not happen too often.
4. I thought The Expendables 2 was pretty fun. JCVD played a good day guy…..and seeing the final fight between JCVD and Sly is memorable…..though I think it is safe to say that Chuck Norris stole that movie.
5. I always liked his Timecop…..and I remember when I saw Sudden Death….my ex-wife was convinced it was better than Die Hard…..which is how that movie is remembered…Die Hard at a Hockey Rink….lol.
6. I actually did not realize he had a voice role in the Kung Fu Panda movies….and I saw both of them in theaters…..so yes you are correct….not many kids begged to see Kung Panda 3 because JCVD was providing a voice….though I bet my ex-wife did….lol.
Thanks for checking out our latest page.
