Possibly Interesting Facts About Jeffrey Hunter
1. Henry Herman “Hank” McKinnies Jr. was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1926.
2. Darryl F. Zanuck of Fox offered McKinnies a long term contract after a successful screen test with Ed Begley. The young actor agreed and the studio changed his name to “Jeffrey Hunter” in 1950.
3. Tab Hunter wrote in his memoir that he was in Madrid in 1967 to make “The Christmas Kid” and ran into Jeffrey Hunter, who was there to make “The Cups of San Sebastian“. Figuring that the producers of either movie wouldn’t know the difference between Tab and Jeffrey, they decided to switch roles. Neither the producers nor anyone else involved with the making of either movie, apparently, knew the difference either.
4. Jeffrey Hunter was the first friend actor Roger Moore made in Hollywood. In his autobiography, Moore says he named his son Geoffrey Moore in his honor.
5. Jeffrey Hunter lobbied to be cast as Mike Brady for the situation comedy The Brady Bunch (1969). Producer Sherwood Schwartz would not consider him, as he thought Hunter was “too good-looking to be an architect”.

In my recollection Jeffrey along with Robert Wagner and my own favourite Rory Calhoun were three of the highest-profile contract stars whom Fox heavily promoted in the 1950s as potential future stars.
None of the three ever made the really Big League and their careers followed different trajectories: my Rory was relegated to mostly B westerns [though to me hugely enjoyable] Wagner had a reasonably successful career in often supporting roles and on television; and Jeffrey after a patchy career sadly died prematurely at 42 possibly the victim of his own alcoholism.
Hunter and Wagner made several movies together and one spoiler on this page is that Bruce lists Jeffrey as his own co-star in White Feather whereas it is possible The Work Horse meant to credit Wagner who had the lead in that movie with Jeffrey 4th billed. [What HAS The Work Horse got against Robert Wagner?]
Not everyone was as negligent as WH though. In the early days Wagner’s career was helped by the patronage of Spencer Tracy who took a shine to the young Robert. For example Robert always praised Tracy for not only getting Wagner a plum part in Tracy’s 1956 The Mountain but because the normally billing-jealous Tracy pressurised the studio into giving Robert equal above-the-title billing to Spence even though Robert’s status at that time would not have entitled him to such billing.
The Mountain was the movie where Old Cantankerous notoriously told Anna Kashfi [who was married to Brando at the time] “Your husband’s an idiot!” I have often wondered whether anyone [say a vulgarian like Crowe or Depp] ever had the audacity to make a similar statement to Mrs Gimme More.
Hey Bob…good thoughts on Wagner, Calhoun and Hunter. Hmmm…I think….an update this afternoon fixed some of the Hunter co-star issues…..as it says Wagner is one of the stars of White Feather. Good Brando story as always. Good stuff.

Hi Pop s!”
It’s good to see that contrary to the message in these rather sad verses young GS o C seems to be treasuring in the HERE and NOW his wider family circle.
In a vine covered shack in a canyon
Bravely fighting the battle of time
Is a dear one who’s weathered life’s sorrows
That silver haired granddaddy of mine
If I could recall all the heartaches
Dear granddaddy life’s caused you to bear
If I could erase those lines from your face
And bring back the gold to your hair
I know it’s too late dear granddaddy
For Life to repay all that sorrow and care
Though dear friends are waiting in heaven
Just to comfort, and solace you there
If God would but grant ME the power
Just to turn back the pages of time
I’d give all I own, if I could have better known
That silver haired granddaddy of mine
Hey Bob..I think Anon….did pretty well for a 3 year old…lol. His aunts…my 11 and 13 year old helped him out. Good lyrics..thanks for sharing it……we granddads need to stick together…lol.
HI GRANDPA GALLANT*** I see that you’ve named GS o C after your great friend and idol Mr Hirschhorn. It’s still a nice name for a boy though – well chosen.
***1950s English weekly comic book character in the stories Grandpa Gallant and Grandpa Gallant Rides Again.
Young Nick’s only 3 and already writing posts! You Cogerson Work Horses sure do get into your harnesses and dash out of the stables early in life.
Good to see the other young members of the Cogerson clan taking him under their wing. I went to school with a guy who was actually older than his aunt and uncle – sounds today like the sort of situation that Cary Grant or Fred Astaire would get mixed up in given the weird chronology of some of their movies!
Make sure Nick gets a BROAD upbringing. Mozart is said to have written his first musical masterpiece when he was just 6; so that when GS o C is 6 we don’t want to learn that he’s already seen more movies than his granddad and that he’s making videos about Christmas slashers and perverts!
“You NEVER had a boyhood. Errol Flynn and Clark Gable got it!” [From a satirical work about the Hollywood cult of stardom.]
FOOTNOTE: Nick sometimes called “Old Nick”is a well-known appellation of the Devil. The name appears to have been derived from the Dutch Nikken, the devil. In the northern countries there is a river spirit named “Neck,” “Nikke,” or “Nokke”. [Wikipedia]. See also the movie Alias Nick Beal starring Ray Milland and Thomas Mitchell.
Hey Bob…I was pushing for Cogerson as his name….but his parents wanted nothing to do with it….so they picked Nicholaus…..which has been shortened to Nick as he has gotten older….unless he is in trouble…lol. Nick might end up being the future of UMR ….though I think Katie (DoC1) might be the better choice for UMR. So far Nick the film critic really likes Frozen and Onward. Pretty soon we will introduce him to John Carpenter’s The Thing…lol. Good stuff.
Excellent UMR Page.
I am glad that I could help.
Good stuff.

The LOWEST movie I have seen is Red Skies of Montana. I am surprised it got so low a rating. It was not that bad, I thought.

Hey Flora….thanks for stopping by and providing feedback on our Jeffrey Hunter page. Tally count: Bob 17, Flora 12, Steve 7 and Cogerson 5. I will have to see if the last 7 or 8 years has been kind to Red Skies of Montana….it has been a very long times since I check those review sources. You have seen all of the 5 I have seen….with only one of those 5 on your favorites list. The Longest Day has such a great cast. Good stuff as always.
