Jeremy Irons Movies

simon-gruberWant to know the best Jeremy Irons movies?  How about the worst Jeremy Irons movies?  Curious about Jeremy Irons box office grosses or which Jeremy Irons movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Jeremy Irons movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place.

Jeremy Irons (1948-) is an English Academy Award® winning actor.  Irons began his acting career on stage in 1969.  After eleven years of stage and televison appearances, Irons appeared in his first motion picture in 1980.   Since that first movie appearance, he has become one of the most recognizable actors in movies.  His IMDb page shows over 95 acting credits since 1971.  In the table below Ultimate Movie Rankings ranks his movies in 6 different sortable columns.  Television roles, cameos, shorts, straight to dvd movies and movies not released in North American theaters were not included in the rankings.

Drivel part:  Where did the time go?  This is our first UMR page on a current star in almost 2 months. Normally when we do a current star, Box Office Mojo, is our main source to make sure we included all of that subject’s movies that were released in North America.  So we thought we were finished with the research on this Irons page when we realized that Mojo had only included about 75% of his movies.  Now we are paranoid that we have left off movies on previously completed current star UMR pages.   So after a few bumps in the road….this page…which was requested by Dan….is now complete.

  1. Hi

No doubt a terrific actor, his work on the stage proves that. But his film work has been patchy at best. I think a lot of his film choices have been probably an acquired taste.
One film I did like was The House of Spirits with Streep and Close, definitely worth looking up.
Chorus of Disapproval isn’t bad, there’s a wonderful scene where two women are fighting over his underpants in a dining room.
I would say my favourite would be The Mission, a terrific movie but perhaps didn’t get the recognition it deserved.
As for Reversal of Fortune, his Oscar winning film, he must have been playing one of the most unsympathetic characters ever. And you are left wondering why bother even defending him. It was definitely a case of the performance better than the film.
And what can I say about Scar, up there as one of Disney’s greatest villains. The role he will probably be best remembered for.

    1. Hey Chris.
      1. Thanks for checking out and commenting on by Jeremy Irons page.
      2. I think his stage background helped him make some of his movie choices…taking roles that were unique and required some solid acting…yet we’re not huge box office draws.
      3. I have not seen House of Spirits yet…but a Close/Irons and a Streep/Irons reunion should probably be on my must watch list.
      4. I agree with you about The Lion King and Reversal of Fortune…two great Irons’ performances.
Thanks for sharing your movie knowledge.

  2. Yes I have always liked him. Though he got an Oscar for Reversal of Fortune it was Dead Ringers that blew me away. So many great performances here. Not surprised his box office is lacking. Good suggestion from Dan. Good job from you.

    1. Hey Helakoski….glad you have always liked him. Dead Ringers has a great (I mean two great) Irons’ performances….but it is not an easy movie to watch. I bet his average box office per movie will be moving up as more DC movies come out. I agree Dan had a good suggestion…thanks for the comment.

  3. HI BRUCE
1 Relatively few British actors have made it really big at the box office Sir Maurice and Sir Sean being among the most high profile exceptions; but since there ARE exceptions it always puzzled me that Jeremy was not among them as he is a fascinating actor to watch.

2 Possibly it’s something to do with his selected subject matter or the way that he is marketed but nonetheless I feel that the truest of movie buffs will always properly appreciate an actor like him and therefore I take off my own hat to you for tipping your hat in Jeremy’s direction with this satisfying page.

3 Most impressive of Jeremy’s work for me was:

    (1) TV series The Borgias. Jeremy’s Rodrigo Borgia was enthralling.

    (2) Von Bulow in Reversal of Fortune (1990) with Glenn Close.

    (3) F Scott Fitzgerald in the TV movie Last Call with Neve Campbell from the Scream franchise. For my money Jeremy’s ‘Scotty’ was superior to that of my own 2nd greatest idol Greg in the 1959 Beloved Infidel.

4 It was ironic that this new page put into Steve’s mind Ralph Fiennes because years ago I used to confuse Jeremy and Ralph.

    Best wishes BOB

    1. Hey Bob
      1. I agree his box office record is not too impressive….like Sir Michael…he will probably end up with some serious box office hits if he remains playing Alfred in the Batman movies.
      2. I also agree that the subjects of his movies are not huge crowd drawers….Damage, Dead Ringers, M. Butterfly….are all good movies….but not ones that the young movie going audience was interested in seeing.
      3. I have not seen any of his tv work…but I know The Borgias had some very good buzz about it.
      4. Mmmmm…I will have to check out Last Call…..though I have seen Last Call starring Sir Michael…does that count?….lol.
      5. I can see you getting Irons and Fiennes mixed up….they seem to play the same rules….though Irons’ attempt to hit a Harry Potter like homerun with Beautiful Creatures failed horribly.
As always…thanks for the comment and the sharing of your vast movie knowledge.

  4. Jeremy Irons, good actor, great voice reminds me of George Sanders. Sanders voiced Shere Khan in Disney’s animated Jungle Book, maybe they had that type of voice in mind when they picked Irons for the voice of Scar in The Lion King. On the subject of voice work I wasn’t impressed with Idris Elba’s Shere Khan in the recent Jungle Book, I could barely make out what he was saying some of the time. On the other hand Benedict Cumberbatch was an excellent choice for the voice of the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit trilogy.

Back to Irons, I’ve seen just 10 of the 37 films listed. My favorites include The Lion King, The Time Machine, Die Hard 3, the much-maligned Batman v Superman, Kingdom of Heaven and The Mission.

I haven’t watched Reversal of Fortune, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, A Chorus of Disapproval and a whole bunch of award worthy dramas.

The Lion King tops all the charts, as it should, I’ve read recently that a live action movie is being planned to be directed by Jon Favreau, are they insane? What next? a live-action Lilo & Stitch?

Jeremy Irons as Hannibal Lecter… interesting choice but I think they went with the right actor.

    Good work Bruce. Voted Up!

    Ralph Fiennes for future consideration.

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Interesting comparison of Irons and Sanders’ voices….I will have to pay more attention to Sanders the next time I see him in a movie.
      2. I actually really enjoyed Idris Elba’s Shere Khan….in a weird way he reminded me of Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight…..as everytime he was on you were waiting for him to do something bad.
      3. I agree that Cumberbatch made a good Smaug….too bad he was barely in the 3rd part.
      4. So your tally is 10….let’s see….I am at…..counting…I am at 16…..but I admit….I do not remember him in Pink Panther 2 or The Time Machine….both I have watched….though PP2 was quickly forgotten.
      5. This is Disney’s new game plan….make live action movies out of all of their animated classics….Beauty and the Beast will be here soon….with Lion King coming quickly after that….I so look forward to the live action movie of Lilo and Stitch…lol.
      6. Reversal of Fortune is ok……but not a movie begging for another viewing.
      7. There are two Irons movies I watch repeatedly …Kingdom of Heaven (Director’s Cut) and Die Hard 3 (one day I will figure out the water measuring part…lol)
      8. Sounds like he could have been Hannibal…..I bet Sir Anthony Hopkins is glad he did not want that part.
      9. I will add Ralph Fiennes to the request list…thanks for the visit and the comment.

  5. Not a huge fan of his, but he does make a good bad guy. Especially in Die Hard 3, Narrow Margin and Lion King. Thanks for a page on a newer actor.

    1. Hey Anonymous…..I agree with you 100%….he made a great bad guy…..and you named three of his movies that really show that…..thanks for the visit.
