Bette Davis and Joan Crawford are two of the greatest actresses ever.  Both are listed in AFI’s Top 10 of Classic Screen Legends….Davis ranked 2nd….while Crawford comes in 10th place.  Their greatness can not be argued.  Still we felt it would be fun to look at their entire careers and see who has the statistical edge.  So…we looked at all of their movies and put them in this massive table.  Below the table is our breakdown of their stats in 6 different categories.  Not sure this proves anything…but it is cool to see their movies listed together.

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  1. Who’d have thunk that Mildred Pierce did that much better than All ABout Eve??? I love this sort of thing!! Thanks Bruce!

    1. Mildred Pierce sits on top of the heap of all of these movies in the table. All About Eve was a decent box office hit…but far from a blockbuster for Bette

    1. You are very welcome….I am always telling people about your Facebook page……and not just because I have a Joan Crawford signed letter hanging on my office wall that I won on this page…lol.

  2. I am curious as to where you get your box office numbers from. Every time I try to find out how much an old movie made, Wiki, IMDB, or other places will list different totals, and I’m not just talking domestic and international.

    1. Hey Richard….MGM, RKO and Warner Brothers have historical “ledgers” that list the “financials” of most of their movies from the Golden Era of Hollywood. Over the years I have gotten my hands on many of those ledgers….through trades with other box office treasure hunters and film historians…plus I traveled across the country to see the Warner Brothers Ledgers with my own eyes. They list the box office numbers in “rentals”…I have turned those rental numbers into a box office gross number….using a historica “rental” percentage….it is not an exact science…but I feel I get my numbers in the neighbor.

  3. Joan doesn’t have as great a resume as Bette. Bette got better scripts and casts. Still Joan had moments of brilliance as in Mildred Pierce, the Women and A Woman’s Face. I love them both equally.

    1. Hey Andrew….I agree they are both all-time greats. I think the thing that hurts Joan is the lack of a great movie that people still want to watch today….Mildred Pierce is close….but Bette has some many movies that people still talk about today….heck the last time I was in a theater…one of the trailers was to see All About Eve on the big screen at my local theater. Thanks for the comment.
