10. Check out Joanne Woodward’s movie career compared to current and classic stars on our Most 100 Million Dollar Movies of All-Time page.
Hi.
First I’d just like to wish you, your family and everyone else on the site a very happy Christmas and peaceful New Year.
I haven’t seen much of Miss Woodward’s movies but any I’ve seen she was always impressive. Whilst she was a terrific actress, I don’t think she was really a movie star in the traditional sense. I don’t think her name would come up in a list of top 20 female movie stars.
But I think it was cool that her and Newman had a wonderful life together.
Hey Chris
1. Thanks for the holiday good wishes…hope you and your family had an awesome day.
2. Good points on Joanne Woodward…..I think Joel’s breakdown on her career is right on the button….”Her failure is a lack of an image, but she’s a character actress with star billing.”….which I think goes very well with your thoughts.
3. I agree…it is cool that she and Newman had a wonderful life…..sad that Newman left her and us almost a decade ok…..but together they have so many good movies together.
4. Empire Falls is a wonderful mini-series with the both of them….it has Newman’s last great performance….but compared to his other classic movies this one has been almost forgotten.
Good feedback as always.

Hey Dan
1. Hope your Xmas was awesome.
2. As always thanks for these lists.
3. I am not surprised that she has not been on the Top 1000….her career…(on our pages only 29 movies)….is not a massive amount of movies….which would hurt her Bacon status.
4. Sad to see that Paul Newman went from a spot in the Top 100….too off the currently list.
5. 22 Oscar winners for 29 movies is pretty impressive…..and the names are legends…from Newman to Hanks to Connery
Great information as always.
I have seen 10 Joanne Woodward movies.

A Big Hand For the Little Lady

The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
Hey Flora
1. Thanks for checking out our Joanne Woodward page.
2. I have seen 12 of her movies….8 of the top 10…….but only 4 of the last 19 movies….so maybe I watched the correct ones.
3. As for your favorites…I have only seen The Long, Hot Summer…good performances in that one….and Newman and Woodward certainly had some serious screen chemistry
4. I want to see A Kiss Before Dying….Robert Wagner as a bad guy….I want to see that.
5. The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds might be the least known movie that Paul Newman was every involved with…..not only have I not seen the movie….I have never seen it on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD or Blu-Ray……and I have seen lots of movies on those mediums.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts…it is greatly appreciated.
She might have won her Academy Award for 3 Faces of Eve, but it was her performance in Rachel, Rachel that has always impressed me the most. Added benefit is that her husband Paul Newman did the directing. It is a must see movie. Excellent look at her career.
Hey Elizabeth… I have not seen Rachel Rachel….but I want to….your high praise has me even more interested in checking that one out. Thanks for the kind words about our Woodward page.
Joanne Woodward is certainly as talented as her husband Paul Newman (he, himself rated her superior to him), but she has not achieved a fraction of his public acceptance. Woodward is superb in comedy and drama, and she has warmth and humanity. Her failure is a lack of an image, but she’s a character actress with star billing.
My 4 Star Joanne Woodward performances from Consumer Reports’ Rating The Movie Stars book.
1956’s A Kiss Before Dying
1957’s The Three Faces of Eve
1957’s No Down Payment
1958’s The Long, Hot Summer
1966’s Big Hand For The Little Lady
1968’s Rachel Rachel
1968’s Winning
When Joel wrote this passage on Joanne Woodward….Paul Newman was alive and at the peak of his career……since that 1982 passage Newman has since passed away……which is why the passage is in the wrong “tense” of time.
