I watched a documentary lately about John Garfield. He felt that his proudest moment was finding the Hollywood canteen along with Bette Davis. It must have been awesome if you were a young soldier or sailor coming from small town America, arriving in Hollywood and meeting movie stars like Bette Grable or Greer Garson. I think Garfield had a great run in the 40s, Humoresque being one his best. I like Postman Always Rings Twice but I feel Warner Bros or Paramount could have did it better. MGM, for all their talent with musicals and family dramas, didn’t really, in my opinion, master film noir.
It’s sad how his career ended, being blacklisted and tragically just after his death, his name was finally cleared.
Hey Chris…that is cool about him and the Hollywood Canteen….I think Davis felt the same way. I think by the time he made Postman….he was pretty disgusted with Warner Brothers. His post Warner career started off so strong….but faded so quickly that he was back at Warners by 1950. His blacklisting is one of Hollywood’s most shameful moments…a truly tragic event.
