    1. Hey Dan
      1. Thanks for the links to #22 on the Bacon list.
      2. Good to see that he is still moving up the charts…though I imagine it is difficult to keep moving up as you get closer to the top.
      3. Epic epic first and second lists.
      4. The thing that caught my eye the most, is it does not look like he worked with the same people over and over….sure there are lots of twos……but usually an actor has somebody they have worked together more than that.
      5. 37 Oscar winners….was lower than I thought….his box office record is suspect…but the projects he appears in….usually generate some award buzz.
Good stuff as always…thanks for taking the time to put this together.

  4. It is unusual for a movie star’s name to be included in the actual title of a theatrically released movie [even the Billing Boys Spencer Trace and Steve McQueen didn’t manage that as far as I’m aware!] It often happens with TV movies – for example The Audrey Hepburn Story, The Liz Taylor Story. Generally though in cinemas such a privilege is reserved for only the GREATEST

The Jolson Story [1946] and Jolson Sings Again [1950] are examples but Al was at the end of his career then and in fact died the year the sequel was released. We did of course have Elvis on Tour and Elvis That’s the Way It Is but then everything about Elvis WAS Elvis and anyway The King was unique in multi ways. Listen to Me Marlon was released in 2015 but that was just a documentary that got a limited art house release and anyway the Great Orator was no longer around to treat our ears to his spellbinding diction – unless of course he has been living a new life somewhere alongside his legendary Teahouse co-star!

Ironically though to my mind John Malkovich has never been “box office and, whilst his name carries a certain prestige because of his unique acting persona and he has had a highly prolific career, a random glance through the cast lists and credits provided on Wikipedia for a selection of his movies suggests to me – and your own posters so far tend to bear out – that for the most part he has been a supporting actor [though he has not only directed and produced bust is also a fashion designer – creatively therefore a sort of “real deal” Joel Hirschhorn].

Accordingly to the best of my recollection as a MOVIE STAR Malko, especially in what was then mid career, was highly unusual in having his name appear in the title of a film 1999’s Being John Malkovich, and I am pleased that you have decided to give us a video on this wonderful actor. My own favourite POSTERS in entries 40-21 are Jonah Hex, Eragon, both ones for Mutant Chronicles, Mulholland Falls, Unlocked, Portrait of a Lady [featuring one of my own favourite supporting actresses of the modern cinema whose career began in the 1968 With Six You Get Eggroll starring my Doris, which was followed with a part in 1969’s Heaven with a Gun starring my Glenn – Barbara Hershey] The Messenger, Ripley’s Game, The Great Buck Howard[co-starring Colin Hanks son of the Great Thomas] Transformers and The Sheltering Sky

    To be continued———-

Hi Bob, good stuff as always. Looking forward to the rest of your review.

      1. I mentioned in Part One that I did not consider Malko “box office” but he nevertheless had a highly prolific career with over 70 movies according to Wiki, which means that once again you have given your viewers great value for money by covering around half or more of a very hefty star career. IMDB list 25 wins and 43 nominations for acting awards across the board in Malko’s case and whilst usually in your video you mention key ones where appropriate my notes this time make no reference to award/noms in the Malko video – have I overlooked those tributes?

Eastwood is one of the very few stars that I can still watch [sorry again Jase!] when Clint takes to the action hero genre and I always find Clint very satisfying in that type of movie even when he is the only star. However while Clint was up to his usual high standard in In the Line of Fire Malko does for me undoubtedly greatly add to the entertainment value of that movie as the weird assassin who in effect stalks Eastwood. Great pairing in my book!

Best POSTERS for me in entries 1-20 are Beowulf [startling!] the first one for Burn After Reading showcasing Malko, both ones for Deep Horizon, the quite sexy one for Warm Bodies, Secretariat, Of Joels and Men, Empire of the Sun, Red 2, “Hitchhiker”, Shadow of the Vampire and his very own Being John M.

STILLS [entire video] with my Julia, Malko in Eleni, in Man in the Iron Mask [even a beard can not disguise the owner of those piercing eyes!] in the snow with Willis and the great Helen Mirren, , in Con Air, lobby card for Shadow of the Vampire [unusual in my experience to see a lobby card in foreign language] in The Killing Fields, looking quite regal with Glenn Close in the very stylish Dangerous Liaisons and going into assassin mode in In the Line of Fire.

My wife and daughter saw In the Line of Fire before I did and I recall picking them up in my car outside the cinema in Belfast and them telling me that Mitch Leary was the “creepiest” villain they had ever seen. That’s saying a lot from two women who were scared silly by Norman Bates’ mother!

An excellent profile of a strange but fascinating actor and I like your habit [shared by The Work Horse] of recognising stars of maybe no great direct box office appeal but who are at times more interesting than some of those who are supposedly box office contenders [sorry yet again Jase !]. Accordingly your Malko video is worth a 98% rating in my scores and has been great fun to view in spite of the offbeat subject matter at times. Vote Up – plus, plus!

        1. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating, info, trivia and anecdote, always appreciated. Glad you enjoyed the picture gallery.

Nice work moving everything to Bruce’s brand new John Malkovich page, let’s just hope he doesn’t delete it and start again. 🙂

I knew when I marked Willem Dafoe down for video consideration I’d have to do one on Malkovich too and straight after. Two of Hollywood’s most offbeat but always interesting actors. One more offbeat actor to upload tomorrow.

He might not be box office but you do acknowledge that there are film fans out there that will watch a film because he was in it, yes? A film they might otherwise have skipped.

Two of John’s films scored 10 out of 10 – The Killing Fields and Being John Malkovich. Three films scored 9 out of 10 – In the Line of Fire, Dangerous Liaisons and Shadow of the Vampire. Eight more scored 8 out of 10.

The Killing Fields tops my chart and the IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes charts and is no.2 on Bruce’s critics chart.

John on turning down the Jimmy Conway role in Goodfellas – “It sort of came at a bad time in my life, when I wasn’t feeling well and didn’t want to think about working. It’s hard to explain why you end up in Eragon and not Goodfellas. But De Niro is fantastic.”

John on making Transformers 3 – ” I love doing things like this. I’m not offered them very much, for reasons that remain obscure to me. It’s always fun to do a film with a certain amount of action and a great amount of fantasy.”

“A lot of our wonderful actors, from Marlon Brando to George C. Scott, found it a shameful occupation and really lost interest in it. But it always interests me, and watching others do it always interests me, and I don’t find it shameful. I mean, as compared to what?”

“I think the nicest experience one has being an actor is when you like watching someone you’re working with…Good actors love to watch good acting, and I think a lot of them – oddly enough, far from being jealous of it or threatened by it – actually live for it. Me, I’ve been a director my whole life, so there’s nothing I love more than sitting there with my piehole shut watching great actors transport me somewhere.”

          1. HI STEVE Thanks for the comprehensive feedback to my Malko posts and for the highly revealing batch of quotes.

I find it interesting that the 3 actors whom John singles out for praise, at least in the quotes you have given us, are DeNiro, George C Scott and ole Mumbles because they formed a kind of mutual admiration circle amongst themselves.

Marlon said that he thought DeNiro was ”so good even he doesn’t realize he’s that good.” DeNiro admired and for a while palled about with Brando and George C told film historian Bob Thomas that “The 3 best American actors that I’ve seen in my lifetime are Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift and John Barrymore.”

Russell Crowe has tried to breach that circle by claiming that he, Russell, was Brando’s favourite actor and that Marlon mentioned him on his death bed and bequeathed Crowe a book as Brando lay dying.

I’ve also mentioned before that Marty Sheen thinks that “towering above them all is GEORGE” [C Scott].

I do agree with you that people would go to see a movie because Malko is in it, because I’m one of those people. [“People will come Ray! People will come!”] I think that John certainly was one who cared more about the quality of the role that he played than about his precise billing provided the latter was respectable in relation to the size of the part.

There! – I’ve come round to your way of thinking at least in relation to Malko. Mumbles getting 2nd billing in Reflections in a Golden Eye still hurts though even after all these years.

I await with interest Oddball No 3. Meanwhile take care.

          2. Hey Bob and Steve
            1. Lots of trivia in your comments….thanks for sharing.
            2. Thank you Bob…for moving these comments to this page.
            3. Good review on Steve’s video and photos.
Great feedback from both of you.

  5. Quick work, well done Bruce. So do you just enter the subject name in the master control program and out pops a stats filled page? Amazing Holmes! 🙂

I’ve seen 26 of the 55 films on the chart, a bit more than I managed on my top 40 video chart. Favorites include – Con-Air, Red 1 & 2, Transformers 3, Beowulf, Warm Bodies, The Killing Fields, In the Line of Fire and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Looking at the critics chart – our top 2’s are reversed, I had Killing Fields at no.1 and Being John Malkovich at no.2.

In the Line of Fire tops the UMR chart, it did well on my chart too.

John’s two most successful films were Con-Air and In the Line of Fire, and they are probably his two most famous villain roles.

John on Being John Malkovich – “When I first looked at the script, the title seemed like a one-line joke, but it turned out to be a 100-page joke.”

A bit of trivia – They changed his name slightly for Being John Malkovich, his full name is ‘John Gavin Malkovich’ but in the film it was changed to ‘John Horatio Malkovich’.

Nice fast work Bruce. Vote Up.

    1. HI SPEEDY GONZALES Before he became unpopular over Watergate Richard Nixon visited some hardworking miners down a mine shaft and they presented him with a safety helmet which said on it “The Nation’s No 1 Worker!” {You know how you Yanks like to grovel around Kings and Presidents!]

I think that if YOU had been down that mine shaft Tricky Dicky would have had to settle for a hat that said “No 2 Worker”!

That’s my way of saying I admire as much as Steve does how quickly you can get new pages up and running.

Certainly you have quickly confirmed my view that Malko was not really a box office star. He has been in just 6 movies that crashed your magic 100 million and although he had a key starring role in 5 of them in none was he THE star nor did he get top billing in any of the 6.

His other 49 movies have a total adjusted domestic gross in your table of approx. $1.34 billion by my quick maths calculations and their average per movie is just $27 million in round figures.

However for my money whether in a starring role or not he always brought something extra and compelling to a movie – and I won’t hold it against him that he doesn’t like method acting!

I propose to transfer to this page later this evening the exchanges between Steve and me today about Malko. Your input and his make good companion pieces as always.

      1. Hey Bob. Sorry to say….I added in another low grosser to the Malkovich page so your totals are now off. I calculate his other “50” movies to be down to $26.80 million per movie. I added in The Wilde Wedding….that had less than $50,000 in box office.

I agree with you about John bringing “something extra” to every movie he has appeared in. He seems to be the “Claude Rains” of today’s movies. Somebody that makes good movies great….and bad movies watchable.

Thanks for moving these comments to this page……they fit in so much nicer here. Good stuff as always.

    2. Hey Steve….all of these years of typing in data into the database has created a “beast”….guys like Malkovich have 50 plus movies just sitting there, waiting to be put on the website. It is a good problem to have. WoC has a way to “push out” all the thespians that have more than 20 movies in the database…..I have resisted doing that…..mainly because….I do not want to be like The Numbers” which has so many pages with only a few movies.

As for Johnny Mal …..actually added in another movie last night…as The Wilde Wedding made the table….so there are now 56 movies listed here. I have seen an additional 3 from your video…so my tally is now 37 or 66% of his movies. I have seen all of your favorite Johnny movies…with Red 1, Con-Air and In The Line of Fire being in my Top 5. I also include Being John Malkovich and Empire of the Sun in that 5.

Thanks for the trivia, the visit, the video, the tally and the thoughts on John Malkovich.
