Hey United States, I agree he has an awesome Top 5. As for The Last Action Hero, I am right there with you. I have always thought it was an under appreciated movie. I think maybe it was too “meta” way before we even understood meta. Whenever, I see that movie I remember reading a quote from Richard Dreyfus’s. He said something to the effect that the movie was good despite all the horrible bad press it was getting. Not many were thinking that way back then. Good feedback.
John has a current net worth of $5 million according to Celebrity Net Worth site despite a downside to his life of being incarcerated in federal prison for charges including perjury and lying to an FBI investigator and he declared bankruptcy in October 2014.
In his filing he claimed to have $6 million in debt and annual earnings of around $300,000 mostly from film residuals. He and his wife owned a sprawling property in Wyoming that was seized by a bank during the foreclosure process.
However that’s all apparently behind him now because he seems to have built-up his legitimate finances again and as director he has currently a new big-screen movie at pre-production stage: “Tau Ceti Four” a sci-fi actioner starring Uma Thurman and Travis Fimmel.
Whilst not condoning what he once did I wish him every success in the future because John is enormously talented and has paid his debt to society by doing time. He was sentenced to 12 months; spent most of it in prison;
but his incarceration was commuted to house arrest for a small final portion of it because of health deterioration. His wife said that he found prison life exceptionally hard-
and anyway if you threw a big net round Hollywood you would probably catch droves of them being smart-ass creative with their tax returns***; and as Jesus said “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone” – Old Testament of The Bible (John 8: 6-7)
***It is alleged that in order to falsely claim state benefits Brando in his later years hid details of his residual cash wealth and claimed to be broke. Yet here is what Celebrity Net Worth site has to say about Marlon’s net worth at the time of his 2004 death:
“Marlon Brando was an American actor, director, and activist who had a net worth of $100 million dollars at the time of his death. [That’s the same as around $160 million in today’s dollars according to The US Bureau of Labor Stats].
At the time of his death, Brando’s liquid assets were worth $23 million. That number did not include a variety of assets including his private island and other real estate.”
Hey Bob. His jail time, certainly derailed his movie career. Although one could argue his version of Rollerball did more damage than the jail time. I am glad to see he is making another movie. Good info on net worths and Brando trivia.
John McTiernan movies I have seen in no strict order:
Die Hard with a Vengeance
Die Hard 1988 – the non-festive cut.
Predator
The Last Action Hero
Thomas Crown Affair
Medicine Man

Among John’s fave actors for his movies would seem to be Arnie, Brucie and Pierce. I heartily approve; and indeed Pierce in turn is a great fan of one of my own sporting idols – Roger Federer – with the pair televised one year having a discussion on a roof top in the Wimbledon tennis centre while the competition was going on below them and each telling the other how wonderful he was in his own particular field of activity.
I could see The Work Horse and Steve Lensman having that kind of conversation though I am not sure anyone would want to televise it!
Hey Bob. Thanks for sharing your McTiernan movies seen. Gotta say I am surprised that The Hunt For Red October is not on the list. Interesting comparison of Roger Federer and Pierce. As for Steve, I bet his tally would be in the double digits. Good feedback.
HI BRUCE: Sadly Roger retired at the end of last year after being named for the 18th consecutive year “favourite tennis player” by the ATP players themselves and topping many fans’ popularity polls as well.
Sort of a John Wayne of tennis in terms of popularity and a Brando/Olivier figure as a skilful performer. Reportedly ticket sales fell when it was revealed that continuing injury prevented Roger from playing in the 2022 Wimbledon grand slam tournament.
For years the Forbes Rich List has named him the highest SPONSORED player of any sport even in years when he hasn’t played. Last year was one of the latter and his sponsorship deals were again the highest being valued at $90 million overall.
The nearest to him in terms of total sponsorship earnings in 2022 were LeBron James at $80 million and footballers Ronaldo and Messi at $55 million each.
Indeed Roger is just one of only 7 players in the entire history of sport to reach $1 billion or more in GROSS earnings [ie before tax and expenses]. Tiger Woods tops that select bunch and there are no other tennis players male or female on it.
Recently things rounded-off nicely to celebrate Roger’s retirement as in the just-published most recent poll of the 20 greatest athletes of all sports Roger is ranked 10th.
Again there are no other tennis players of either gender on the list which is headed by Michael Jordan followed by Muhammad Ali and the late Pele – good company for Roger to be in!
To be honest I was not familiar with John’s work; but as I have seen 7 of his movies [about 64% of the total – see part 2] I am probably as much of an expert on John as -say – The Work Horse is.
I mean I’m highly selective about actors and other moviemakers and admire only the best-The Duke, Ladd, Royal Dana aka Greg Peck etc – whereas Bruce seems to drool-over just about everyone connected with the business.
I mean it doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to work that out: to realise it one has simply to read the stuff WH writes about John Dillinger’s fancy woman.
And I bet that given John McTiernan’s involvement with 2 of the Die Hard franchise he gets a Christmas card each year from Team Cogerson, though maybe not from Bruce Willis himself – if you get my meaning.
Hey Bob. Thanks for the comments on our latest page. Your tally of 7 is pretty good, for a guy you did not really know. My tally is at 10…maybe even 11, but I am not 100% sure I saw Nomads. As for Die Hard as a Xmas movie, I am not sure McTiernan has offered his thoughts on the matter. But let’s assume he is in the Christmas movie category….lol.
What an incredible Top 5 movies. I also like the sixth ranked movie.
