Want to know the best Johnny Depp movies? How about the worst Johnny Depp movies? Curious about Johnny Depp’s box office grosses or which Johnny Depp movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Johnny Depp movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.
Johnny Depp started out his movie career playing secondary parts in movies like and Nightmare on Elm Street and Platoon. He then turned to television where he gained notoriety when he played Officer Tom Hanson on the television series 21 Jump Street from 1987 to 1990. He left the series for a return to the big screen. In 1990 he had two movies released….John Water’s Cry Baby and Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. Scissorhands was the first of many collaborations between Tim Burton and Depp. For the next 15 years Depp, built a solid reputation for making quality movies with limited box office. That all changed when Depp took on the part of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Pirates was a monster hit and turned Depp into one of the biggest movie stars making movies today.
His IMDb page shows over 90 acting credits since 1984. This page will rank Johnny Depp movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in theaters were not included in the rankings.

5. Johnny Depp became great friends with the writer Hunter S. Thompson after playing Hunter in 1998’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. 13 years later he would play Hunter again in the 2011 movie The Rum Diary.
6. Speaking of Hunter S. Thompson one of Johnny Depp’s greatest regrets deals with Thompson. One day Depp found an message on his answering machine…it was from Hunter S. Thompson..and it started to ramble on and on so Depp, without listening to the whole message hit save and went to the next message…a couple days later he heard Hunter S. Thompson killed himself…he went back to the answering machine, wanting to hear the message but the message was gone…Depp says he thinks daily about that message and how it ended.

Johhny Depp is one of the few current actors where I do consider myself a fan of the actor-but not enough that I will watch a bad film or a film totally not in the right genre for me (no Elm Street) I haven’t seen everything he has done, but I’ve seen a lot more than most current actors, especially depending upon what genre the movies are.
However, I have only seen the first two Pirates of the Caribbean films. I don’t know that I’ll see any more of them, because I find the more sequels there are, thee more dissatisfied I am with them.
Top ten box office:
I have seen 5 of these: #1,2,7,9, and 10.
Top 10 critic scores:
I have seen 4 of these movies: 1,2,8 and 10.
note: I have seen Sweeny Todd in Vancouver (the stage musical) and loved it, and judging from the reviews it got, this was changed a lot so I didn’t see the movie.
Top ten movie scores:
I have seen four of them.
Overall, I have seen 10 of his films you list , a big percentage for me. I have also seen Platoon which you do not include. Include that, and I’ve seen 28% of his films-
like Steve, I find Edward Sissorhands too sad to watch often and is thus not one of my favourites.
My 5 top favourites are, alphabetically:
Chocolat-my overall favourite
Ed Wood-also sad what happened to Bela, but still a great tribute to the actor played by Landau
Finding Neverland
Pirates of the Caribbean-Curse of the Black Pearl
Sleepy Hollow
Hey Flora…I am impressed that you have seen so many of his movies….that has to be near the top of current actors for you. I am there with you about Pirates…I loved The Curse of the Black Pearl, thought Dead Man’s Chest was ok….and really disappointed with At World’s End…so disappointed that I refuse to watch the fourth…and the fifth and sixth ones that are coming.
As for Sweeney Todd…I never knew it was a stage musical until I saw Jersey Girl about a year ago…and in that movie the little girl does Sweeney Todd as a school play….I learn stuff everyday….glad to hear the show you saw was excellent.
I agree with your Top 5….especially Ed Wood,Finding Neverland and Black Pearl…can’t even think of a movie you should watch that you have not seen yet….thanks as always for visiting.
“But why’s the rum gone?”
My favourite line in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Hmmm I didn’t know Depp made so many films, even more shocking is that I’ve seen most of them!
The top 10 is exactly how pictured it would be. 🙂
I liked Rango, bought it on blu-ray, it was different.
I thought Pirates 4 was routine and not on a par with the previous 3, made me appreciate Gore Verbinski’s overblown trilogy more.
I haven’t seen Edward Scissorhands in ages, I found it very sad and that tends to put me off rewatching some films. Very good film and Danny Elfman’s score was perfect. And I think it was Vincent Price last film.
An enjoyable movie page Bruce with some interesting bits of trivia.
Hey SteveLensman…..well looking at his list I have seen 31 of his 38 movies…or 82% of his movies….not too bad of a number…especially since I do not feel I am a huge Johnny Depp fan.
“But why’s the rum gone?” is a great line….my oldest daughter was a huge Pirates fan…and that was one of her favorite lines as well. One of the movies I have not watched of his is The Libertine….it is one of the few movies in my entire life that I turned the movie off and never watched the end…and so far I have not regreted that decision once.
Vincent Price’s last movie was Edward Scissorhands…and agree it is a good movie…but sad is a great way to describe it…..thanks for checking out this facelifted page.
I really don’t understand why so many people like Edward Scissorhands. My favorite Tim Burton remain’s Beetlejuice. Depp has been in some great movies. The first pirate was the best the others confusing but still fun. The Dutch east trade company come across as the Evil Empire of the 17th? 18th? century. Which they apparently were, yet it seems odd rooting for pirates, the theives, murderers and rapists of the sea.
Not all pirates were as charming as Jack or pretty as Elisabeth and Will. haha.
Hey ruffridyer….I know my oldest daughter(17 years old) thinks Edward Scissorhands is the best movie ever made….my favorite Tim Burton movies is Big Fish…..as for Pirates they hit the bullseye with the first one…..and they have tried to do top the first one….and in my opinion have failed to recapture that magic…thanks for stopping by
I loved the 4th Pirates, it was a great movie. Then again I love anything he is in. Nice Depp story.
I am very glad you enjoyed Pirates 4…..it is already Johnny Depp’s number 19 movie after only one weekend…..thanks for stopping by.
I didnt know Johnny made bad movies, now I do!
Hey Multiman….I do not think he makes bad movies anymore….but his youth had some bad movies…lol….thanks for reading
