Johnny Depp started out his movie career playing secondary parts in movies like and Nightmare on Elm Street and Platoon. In 1990 he had two movies released….John Water’s Cry Baby and Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. Scissorhands was the first of many collaborations between Tim Burton and Depp. For the next 15 years Depp, built a solid reputation for making quality movies with limited box office.  That all changed when Depp took on the part of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Pirates was a monster hit and turned Depp into one of the biggest movie stars making movies today.

His IMDb page shows over 90 acting credits since 1984. This page will rank Johnny Depp movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in theaters were not included in the rankings.

  1. My thoughts on Steve’s Johnny Depp You Tube Video…which is now on this page.

I have seen 44 of these movies. Surprisingly a few I am not even really aware of….looking right at #46 The Brave. #49 Mortadecai is brutally bad…even worse than his 2 part Kevin Smith movie franchise Tusk and Yoga Hoser. Secret Garden seems low at #43…seems professional critics were “meh” about it….but movie goers like that one. Favorites would include 3 in the Top 5…#1 Platoon…need to rewatch that one #4 POTC Curse of Black Pearl….fun movie and #5 Ed Wood….Landau steals the movie. Other favorites would include Black Mass, From Hell and Murder on the Orient Express. Not sure if I ever finished The Libertine….seems that might be one of the few movies I started and never got around to watching the entire movie. Voted up and shared

    1. Hi Bruce, your 44 beats my 35, Flora has seen 6.

I looked at your Johnny Depp page here at the UMR when I was finishing the video in case I missed anything important. I was surprised to see Platoon wasn’t listed. The no.1 movie wasn’t on your chart, how often does that happen? 🙂

It’s a small part yes but it’s important, Depp plays the interpreter in the platoon and you see him all through the film, he even has his own separate credit photo at the end along with the other main actors.

Thanks again for the comment vote and share, always appreciated.

      1. Hey Steve…Platoon is now listed on Depp’s page. Way back when…I think I excluded it since it seemed strange to have his number one movie being one he is only a small part of….but over the years we have gotten over that thinking…just never went back and changed his table. Amazing that I originally put that page together 8 years ago. Glad to share your videos.

  2. Best POSTERS in your video entries 50-26: 1/two racy ones for Private Resort 2/1st one for Transcendence 3/1st one for Alice/Looking Glass 4/1st one for Dark Shadows 5/the set for Lone Ranger 6/Cry Baby 7/foreign language one for Into the Woods 8/The Brave. The latter was one of Brando’s final films and went straight to DVD so yours is in fact the first and only poster that I’ve ever seen for it and it is noteworthy that Brando still gets first billing. A collector’s item for me!

Best POSTERS entries 1-25 1/two for The Gambler 2/1st one for Charlie/Choc Factory 3/From Hell 4/Public Enemies 5/Benny and Joon 6/Dead Man [your poster doesn’t show it but Mitchum had a supporting part in that one] 7/Blow 8/two for Corpse Bride 9/two for Elm Street 10/two for Sweeney Todd 11/racy one for Ed Wood 12/Edward Scissorhands 13/Platoon

Best STILLS all entries: 1/Charlize 2/Jolie 3/Nick of Time 4/raunchy one for Dark Secrets 5/Once upon a Time in Burnley 6/Into the Woods 7/Myrna in Wonderland 8/Charlie/Choc Factory 9/Public Enemies 10/Rango 11/Gilbert Grape 13/ Sleepy Hollow 14/Life cover 15/’Bela’ in Ed Wood 16/Donnie Brasco 17/Edward Scissorhands 18/two for Platoon 19/Don Juan De Marco.

PLUS virtually every still and poster for Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts franchises, which fractionally lifted the Depp video to THE HIGHEST score I think I have ever given your work – 99.2%. Of course I think it has been some time since you gave us a 50-entry video which naturally added to the value of the overall presentation. You and Bruce agree on 4 of Johnny’s Top 6 best reviewed: Sweeney Todd, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Donnie Brasco. You have Platoon in your 6 but WH completely leaves it out of his charts

    1. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating (ooh nice), box office info, trivia and comparison, much appreciated. Glad you liked the posters and stills.

This is a first, the no.1 movie on my video is missing from Bruce’s chart. As I was telling Bruce in a recent reply on my channel Depp had a small but important role in Platoon as the interpreter. The funny thing is that he included Thor Ragnarok in Matt Damon’s chart and he had a brief uncredited cameo in that and was barely recognisable. 🙂

I’m kind of surprised these modern ‘youngish’ actors have made so many movies in such a short time. and Depp hasn’t even moved into direct to video movies yet like Stallone, Cage and Willis.

They’re planning a 6th Pirates of the Caribbean film without Depp, which is a bit of a gamble, it should save the studio a bundle on wages but will anyone go and see it?

Three of Johnny Depp’s films have scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Ed Wood, Ed Scissorhands and Ed Platoon.

Donnie Brasco and Finding Neverland have both scored 9.

Depp on Marlon Brando – “Brando is maybe the greatest actor of the last two centuries. But his mind is much more important than the acting thing. The way that he looks at things, doesn’t judge things, the way that he assesses things. He’s as important as, uh… who’s important today? Jesus, not many people… Stephen Hawking!”

Depp on Vincent Price – “One of the most incredible moments I’ve ever had was sitting in Vincent’s trailer. I was showing him this first-edition book I have of the complete works of Edgar Allan Poe, with really amazing illustrations. Vincent was going nuts over the drawings, and he started talking about The Tomb of Ligeia. Then he closed the book and began to recite it to me in this beautiful voice, filling the room with huge sounds. Such passion! I looked in the book later, and it was verbatim. Word perfect. It was a great moment. I’ll never forget that.”

“There are those who meet their heroes and go, “Aw, f**k.” And I’ve never had that, luckily. I was never disappointed by the people I’ve admired.”

“Sure, I find getting nominated touching, honestly, but awards are not as important to me as when I meet a ten-year-old kid who says, “I love Captain Jack Sparrow” . . . that’s real magic for me.”

      1. HI STEVE

Thanks for the thoughtful reply including explanations and quotes.Because (1) it’s been so long since I’ve seen Platoon and (2) Depp wasn’t well-known at the time, I can’t recall his role in it.

However Bruce Willis gets a grosses credit from WH for Split and if Johnny was in Platoon at all and his role was shorter that Willis’ was in Split “I wouldn’t like to live on the difference” as The Duke said in 1959’s Rio Bravo when Dino asked him whether Dino’s character or that of Ricky Nelson was faster on the draw.

Anyway take care and have a good weekend.

  3. 1/Johnny Depp is among those stars who, on page 16 of Bruce’s recent book, get an “honourable mention” outside the 50 Greatest Movies Stars of All Time as defined by Bruce’s criteria. Depp is also among those actors who were “closely considered” for inclusion [but again not included] in The Work Horse’s 25 Greatest Male Legends 1950-2010.

2/According to the stats above Johnny’s Top 30 Highest Grossing global hits have an adjusted worldwide total gross of around $13.0 billion, an average of approx $435 million per movie. Wow! The Pirates franchise accounts for some $5 billion of that total.

3/Personally Johnny is among the richest*** movie stars in history with a reported net worth of $200 million. IMDB credits him with a whopping 75 acting awards and 146 nominations and ranks him 66th in its list of the 100 greatest male stars of all time on the basis of ACTING ability. IMDB states “Johnny Depp is perhaps one of the most versatile actors of his day and age in Hollywood.”

4/***Your opening quote from Johnny in your Depp video “I hate fame. I’ve done everything I can to avoid it.” My response-

    (1) Now tell me the one about The Three Bears!
    (2) He certainly hasn’t done everything he can to avoid NOTORIETY: he and Russell Crowe have currently fought each other to a draw in real life for the award “Hollywood’s baddest bad boy.”
