    1. Hey Dan….somewhat shocked that Cotten was so high on the 2000 list….then again….that was 17 years ago….seems so strange that 2000 is so long ago. Heaven’s Gate was certainly helping out with that cause….wow….tons of actors on the list.

Wow Orson Welles was in the Top 10 in 2000….that is amazing. 42 Oscar winners is below average especially for as many movies and for as long as his career was. As always….thanks for sharing this information…..good stuff….:)

      1. I don’t know if 42 is that disappointing. Mr. Cotten’s career commences officially in 1941 (not counting Welles’ Too Much Johnson from 1938). Oscar winners by the time their careers start in that era don’t have much to work with. Oscar winners start 1927/28. So 14 years at best of winners as your career starts as opposed to how many were alive and working 40 years ago or if you’re career started now. You can work with Robert De Niro now who won 43 years ago or Maggie Smith who won 48 years ago. In 1941 you had no supporting Oscar winners before 1936 and of the 5 awards for supporting actor at the time Walter Brennan had won 3 of them. In the lead categories Spencer Tracy, Bette Davis and Louise Rainer had won 2times each. Marie Dressler who won in 1931 was dead as was Alice Brady who won in 1938. We might have to give some of the old timers some slack and figure they will always be outnumbered by the future generations. It’s like the Baseball Hall of Fame, there are over 50 players who were active in 1934 that are in the Hall even though there are only 16 teams. Do you think with 30 teams now that some 100 players active this year will be in? Probably less will get in even though the voters will base their choices on lesser qualifications

        1. Hey Dan…..I agree he started so early…..a lot changes in Hollywood in 14 years…but you are right between deaths, no supporting actors, silent stars that failed in sound movies…..those early winners did not last long enough. Good way to compared movies to baseball…two of my favorite subjects.

  2. Hello Flora.
Portrait of Jennie is a good one. Unfortunately it is not available on video. But it is played on Turner Classic Movies every now and again.

    1. Hey Lyle…..thanks for the information….I recently watched Portrait of Jennie on DVD….either it is a new release or an old copy that has been in my local library for ages. Hopefully Flora will be able to catch it on TCM. 🙂

  3. Thanks for my requested page on Joseph Cotten.

I have seen 19 of these movies.

The highest ranking film I have seen is Citizen Kane.

The highest ranking film I have NOT seen is Portrait of Jennie.

The lowest ranking film I have seen is Airport 77.

My favourite film is Shadow of a Doubt.

Other favourites are Citizen Kane, Gaslight, The Third Man and The Magnificent Ambersons.

I’ve never found copies of some of his films including Twilight’s Last Gleaming or I’ll Be Seeing You. Maybe some day.

    1. Hey Flora….you are welcome…sorry it took so long to get the page completed. Tally count…pretty. Flora 19, Bruce 18 and Steve 16. Actually shocked that I am that close to your tally. Portrait of Jennie is an interesting movie….that has a huge fan base. Jennifer Jones and Cotten made a good screen team.I have seen your 5 favorite Cotten movies. All are great movies….though I do admit I think Ambersons is a little overrated. Thanks for the visit. 🙂

  4. We were nearly in sync on this one Bruce, just a few days apart. Thanks for linking my video amigo, it is appreciated.

And you’ve managed to get his name spelt correctly each time, kudos! Yes with a grin on my face I did search for ‘Cotton’ and only found it in Lyle’s post. I remember previous postings on the actor everyone was using different spellings, mine was the best – Joe Gotten. 😉

I’ve seen 16 of the 48 films listed, that’s more than I managed on my video. Favorites include The Magnificent Phibes, The Abominable Dr. Amberson, Citizen Caine, The 4th Man, Shadow of a Doubt, Soylent Green, Portrait of Jennie, Twilight’s Last Gleaming, Tora Tora Tora Tora and Duel in the Sun.

We have the same top two on our charts, but Gaslight tops the UMR, Kane down to no.6

Duel in the Sun was a huge hit, nearly half a billion dollars ‘adjusted’ in the US alone, I wonder if it’s the highest grossing western in film history. Or is it Dances With Wolves? Butch Cassidy? Blazing Saddles?

Another expert movie page for movie fans and stat freaks. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve.
      1. Your You Tube output is putting me to shame….but at least I got this Cotten page done pretty soon after your video.
      2. Yep…I double checked by spelling of Mr. Gotten….lol.
      3. Wow…I have you topped….and pretty close to Flora’s total too…patting myself on the back. Flora 19, Bruce 18 and Steve 16.
      4. Of your favorites…I have not seen Twilight’s Last Gleaming…but enjoyed the favorites you listed.
      5. As for top grossing western? That honor belonged to Duel in the Sun for over 23 years….before Butch and Sundance showed up….no western has topped that one though….currently 36th on the All-Tme Adjusted Box Office list.
Thanks for the kind words, tally count and Gotten Lensman movie preferences…all are greatly appreciated.

  5. Hello Bruce,
When I was a kid watching late night movies I didn’t much like Joseph Cotton. But when I became a film buff as an adult I began to appreciate Mr. Cotton. I mean Citizen Kane, Love Letters, Magnificent Ambersons, Since You Went Away, Shadow of a Doubt and my favorite The Third Man are all classics I love. Thanks for doing a page on Mr. Cotton, a good solid likable actor.

    1. Hey Lyle…glad (a) you have grown to like Joseph Cotten more and (b) glad you like this UMR page subject. I have not seen Love Letters yet….but it always amazes how much money it earned. I feel he is one of the most underrated actors of all-time…what a brilliant 1940s he had. 🙂
